CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Early marriage, often defined as the union of individuals below the age of 18, is a social phenomenon with deep cultural, religious, and economic roots in many societies. Globally, early marriage has been identified as a major barrier to personal development, education, and social stability, with significant implications for family life (UNICEF, 2021). Within the Nigerian context, despite increasing awareness of the adverse effects of early marriage, the practice persists in various communities due to socio-cultural norms, religious teachings, and economic incentives (Adewumi, 2019).

In Christian homes, marriage is traditionally regarded as a sacred covenant, founded on biblical principles emphasizing love, mutual respect, and readiness for lifelong commitment (Ephesians 5:22–33). However, early marriage can disrupt these ideals, as adolescents often lack emotional maturity, financial stability, and preparedness for the responsibilities associated with family life (Okeke & Nwosu, 2020). Early marriage has been linked to higher rates of marital conflict, domestic violence, early childbearing, and reduced educational attainment, which collectively threaten the stability and well-being of Christian homes (Smith & Jones, 2018).

In Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the rapid urbanization and intermingling of diverse ethnic groups create a unique setting for examining the dynamics of early marriage within Christian communities. While some churches actively discourage early marriages, citing biblical and social reasons, others may lack structured programs to educate families and youth on its consequences (Chukwu, 2022). Despite the strong emphasis on moral teachings and family stability in the church, early marriage remains prevalent in certain congregations, potentially undermining the spiritual, emotional, and socio-economic foundations of Christian homes.

Given these dynamics, there is a pressing need to investigate how early marriage impacts Christian homes in Abuja, with particular attention to marital stability, family cohesion, spiritual well-being, and socio-economic outcomes. By understanding these effects, churches and policymakers can design interventions that align with both religious principles and contemporary societal demands.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Early marriage continues to pose significant challenges for Christian homes, yet limited empirical research has explored its impact within urban church settings in Abuja. Many families enter marital unions for adolescents without fully considering the psychological, educational, and socio-economic consequences (UNFPA, 2020). Consequently, children in these homes may experience disruptions in education, increased vulnerability to domestic violence, early pregnancies, and financial instability.

Christian homes, which are expected to uphold strong moral and spiritual values, may face the erosion of these ideals when early marriage is practiced. Couples who marry prematurely often struggle to fulfill their spiritual roles, manage household responsibilities, and maintain healthy relationships, leading to family disintegration (Oluwatosin, 2019). Moreover, church leaders and members may be unprepared to offer the necessary guidance or counseling, leaving young couples at risk of marital dissatisfaction and social isolation.

Therefore, understanding the implications of early marriage on Christian homes is critical for both religious leaders and policymakers, as it informs interventions aimed at strengthening family stability, promoting youth education, and mitigating socio-cultural pressures that perpetuate early marriage.

1.3 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the prevalence of early marriage within the selected Christian churches in Abuja?
2. How does early marriage affect marital stability in Christian homes?
3. What is the influence of early marriage on the spiritual and emotional well-being of family members?
4. How does early marriage impact the socio-economic status of Christian families in Abuja?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:

1. To examine the prevalence of early marriage in selected Christian churches in Abuja.
2. To evaluate the impact of early marriage on marital stability in Christian homes.
3. To assess the influence of early marriage on the spiritual and emotional well-being of family members.
4. To investigate the socio-economic consequences of early marriage in Christian families in Abuja.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

This study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Early marriage has no significant impact on the stability and well-being of Christian homes in Abuja.

H₁: Early marriage has a significant impact on the stability and well-being of Christian homes in Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are significant for several reasons:

1. Church Leaders: It provides empirical evidence that can guide church leaders in counseling youth and families about the implications of early marriage.
2. Policymakers: Insights from this study can inform policies aimed at protecting children and promoting delayed marriage.
3. Academia: It contributes to existing literature on marriage practices, family stability, and religious studies in urban Nigerian contexts.
4. Families and Youth: The study raises awareness among families and adolescents about the risks and consequences of early marriage, promoting informed decision-making.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on five selected Christian churches in Abuja, representing diverse denominations. The research examines the impact of early marriage on marital stability, family cohesion, spiritual well-being, and socio-economic outcomes within Christian homes. The study targets married couples, church leaders, and members who have firsthand experience with early marriage practices. The timeframe of the study is limited to experiences reported within the past ten years to ensure contemporary relevance.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Early Marriage: Refers to the formal or informal union of individuals before the age of 18, often resulting from cultural, religious, or economic pressures (UNICEF, 2021). In this study, it specifically relates to young adolescents entering marriage within Christian contexts.

Christian Homes: Families in which Christian beliefs, values, and teachings guide relationships, child-rearing, and daily life (Ephesians 5:22–33). This study focuses on families within selected churches in Abuja.

Marital Stability: The degree to which a marriage is secure, harmonious, and capable of enduring challenges without leading to separation or conflict (Okeke & Nwosu, 2020).

Family Cohesion: The emotional bonding and sense of togetherness among family members, reflecting cooperation, support, and shared values (Smith & Jones, 2018).

Spiritual Well-Being: The state of an individual’s or family’s alignment with religious beliefs, practices, and sense of purpose derived from faith (Chukwu, 2022).

Socio-Economic Status: The social and economic position of a family, determined by income, education, occupation, and access to resources (Adewumi, 2019). In this study, it relates to the financial stability and living standards of families affected by early marriage.

Church Leadership: Individuals holding positions of authority in a church (e.g., pastors, elders, deacons) responsible for guiding congregants in moral, spiritual, and social matters.

Adolescents: Young people aged between 10 and 19 years, who are at risk of entering early marriage according to international standards (UNICEF, 2021).
