INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Malaria remains one of the most significant public health challenges globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where climatic conditions favor the breeding and survival of Anopheles mosquitoes, the primary vectors of the disease. Despite decades of control efforts, malaria continues to account for substantial morbidity and mortality, especially among vulnerable populations such as children under five years and pregnant women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2023), there were approximately 249 million malaria cases globally, with Africa accounting for about 94% of these cases, highlighting the region’s disproportionate burden.
Nigeria bears a significant share of the global malaria burden, ranking among the highest in terms of prevalence and mortality. The disease is endemic across all regions of the country due to favorable environmental conditions such as high rainfall, humidity, and temperature. Reports indicate that malaria contributes to about 25% of infant mortality and 30% of childhood mortality in Nigeria (National Malaria Elimination Programme [NMEP], 2021). It also imposes a heavy socio-economic burden on households due to healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and reduced quality of life.
Malaria prevention has been widely recognized as a cost-effective strategy for reducing the burden of the disease. Preventive measures include the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), environmental sanitation, use of mosquito repellents, and proper drainage systems to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Among these, the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has been identified as one of the most effective interventions. However, the success of these preventive strategies largely depends on the level of knowledge and practices adopted by households.
Knowledge of malaria transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures is a critical determinant of health behavior. Households with adequate knowledge are more likely to adopt preventive practices such as consistent use of insecticide-treated nets, prompt treatment-seeking behavior, and environmental sanitation. Conversely, misconceptions about malaria—such as attributing it to exposure to sunlight or consumption of certain foods—can hinder effective prevention efforts. Studies have shown that although awareness of malaria is generally high in Nigeria, comprehensive knowledge and correct practices are often lacking (Adebayo et al., 2015).
Practice, on the other hand, refers to the actual implementation of preventive measures within households. There is often a gap between knowledge and practice due to factors such as poverty, cultural beliefs, accessibility of preventive tools, and attitudes towards malaria control interventions. For instance, some households may own insecticide-treated nets but fail to use them consistently due to discomfort, heat, or perceived inconvenience. Additionally, poor environmental sanitation and inadequate waste management systems contribute to the persistence of mosquito breeding sites in many communities.
Nsukka Local Government Area in Enugu State is characterized by both urban and rural settlements, with varying levels of access to healthcare services and infrastructure. The environmental conditions in Nsukka, including stagnant water bodies, poor drainage systems, and seasonal rainfall, create favorable breeding grounds for mosquitoes. While government and non-governmental organizations have implemented malaria control programs in the area, the effectiveness of these interventions largely depends on the knowledge and practices of households.
Understanding the level of knowledge and the extent to which preventive practices are adopted by households in Nsukka LGA is essential for designing effective malaria control strategies. Assessing these factors will help identify gaps, misconceptions, and barriers to effective malaria prevention. It will also provide valuable insights for policymakers, health educators, and public health practitioners to develop targeted interventions aimed at reducing the burden of malaria in the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Malaria continues to pose a serious public health problem in Nigeria despite numerous interventions and control strategies implemented over the years. In Nsukka Local Government Area, the disease remains prevalent, affecting households and contributing to frequent illness, increased healthcare costs, and reduced productivity.
Although awareness of malaria is relatively high among the population, there is growing concern that this awareness does not necessarily translate into appropriate preventive practices. Many households still experience repeated episodes of malaria, suggesting that existing knowledge may be inadequate or not effectively applied. In some cases, misconceptions about the causes and prevention of malaria persist, leading to inappropriate health behaviors.
Furthermore, the utilization of key preventive measures such as insecticide-treated nets and environmental sanitation practices remains inconsistent. Some households either do not have access to these preventive tools or fail to use them properly. Factors such as financial constraints, cultural beliefs, lack of education, and poor attitudes toward preventive measures contribute to this problem. Additionally, environmental factors such as poor drainage systems and improper waste disposal practices further exacerbate the situation by creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Despite various malaria control programs in Enugu State, there is limited localized data specifically examining the knowledge and practices of households in Nsukka LGA. Without such data, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of current interventions or to design strategies that address the specific needs of the community.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess the level of knowledge and practice of malaria prevention among households in Nsukka Local Government Area. Identifying the gaps between knowledge and practice, as well as the factors influencing these behaviors, is crucial for improving malaria control efforts and reducing the disease burden in the area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and practice of malaria prevention among households in Nsukka LGA.
The specific objectives are to:
- Assess the level of knowledge of malaria transmission and prevention among households.
- Examine the preventive practices adopted by households against malaria.
- Identify factors influencing the knowledge of malaria prevention.
- Determine factors affecting the practice of malaria prevention among households.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀ (Null Hypothesis):
There is no significant relationship between knowledge of malaria prevention and the practice of malaria prevention among households in Nsukka LGA.
