INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Agriculture remains a fundamental sector in the economic development and sustainability of many nations, particularly developing countries like Nigeria. It plays a vital role in food production, employment generation, and poverty reduction. In Nigeria, agriculture contributes significantly to the national economy, accounting for over 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing a large proportion of the population, especially in rural areas . Despite this importance, the sector continues to face numerous challenges, including low productivity, poor technological adoption, and declining interest among young people.

One of the major concerns in Nigeria today is the decreasing interest of youths in agriculture as a viable career path. Historically, agriculture was regarded as a prestigious and essential occupation; however, the discovery of crude oil and the shift toward white-collar jobs have significantly reduced young people’s engagement in farming activities. Studies reveal that many youths show little or no interest in agriculture, leaving the sector largely dominated by the older generation . This trend poses a serious threat to the sustainability of food production and national food security.

Agricultural education has been identified as a key strategy for addressing this challenge. It involves the teaching of agricultural science, skills, and practices in schools with the aim of equipping students with knowledge and competencies required for modern farming. Agricultural education is not only about theoretical instruction but also practical exposure that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable agricultural practices. It provides students with opportunities to develop skills in crop production, livestock management, and agribusiness, thereby making agriculture more attractive and relevant.

Furthermore, agricultural education plays a crucial role in ensuring food security. Food security refers to the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food for all individuals at all times. Research indicates that improved agricultural knowledge and productivity directly contribute to enhanced food security outcomes . Through education, students can acquire the skills needed to increase agricultural output, adopt modern farming techniques, and address food shortages effectively. In Nigeria, agricultural education has been shown to contribute significantly to skill acquisition and food production, thereby enhancing nutritional and food security .

In recent years, the Nigerian government has recognized the importance of agricultural education in promoting youth participation and addressing food insecurity. Reforms in agricultural curricula have been introduced to modernize teaching methods, integrate technology, and align education with industry needs. These reforms aim to attract young people to agriculture and prepare them for opportunities in the agricultural value chain . However, despite these efforts, the level of students’ interest in farming remains relatively low in many secondary schools.

Secondary education is a critical stage in shaping students’ career interests and aspirations. At this level, students are exposed to subjects that influence their future choices. Therefore, effective agricultural education at the secondary school level can play a significant role in motivating students to develop an interest in farming and related agricultural activities. Practical-oriented teaching, availability of school farms, and qualified teachers can enhance students’ engagement and perception of agriculture as a profitable and respectable profession.

However, the effectiveness of agricultural education in achieving these objectives depends on several factors, including teaching methods, availability of resources, curriculum content, and students’ attitudes. Where agricultural education is poorly implemented, it may fail to inspire students or equip them with the necessary skills. Consequently, understanding the impact of agricultural education on students’ interest in farming and food security is essential for improving educational practices and achieving sustainable agricultural development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of agriculture to Nigeria’s economy and food security, there has been a persistent decline in the interest of young people in farming activities. Many secondary school students perceive agriculture as a labor-intensive, low-income, and unattractive profession. This negative perception has contributed to the aging population of farmers and reduced youth participation in agricultural production.

Agricultural education, which is expected to address this challenge by equipping students with relevant knowledge and skills, appears to be facing significant limitations. In many secondary schools, agricultural science is taught theoretically with little or no practical exposure. School farms are either inadequate or non-functional, and instructional materials are often lacking. As a result, students do not gain hands-on experience that could stimulate their interest in farming.

Furthermore, the disconnect between agricultural education and real-life agricultural practices has limited its effectiveness. Many students complete their secondary education without developing practical agricultural skills or considering agriculture as a career option. This situation undermines the objective of agricultural education as a tool for promoting food security and sustainable development.

At the same time, Nigeria continues to face challenges related to food insecurity, including rising food prices, low agricultural productivity, and increasing population growth. Research has shown that increased agricultural productivity leads to improved food security outcomes , yet the lack of youth involvement in agriculture threatens future food production.

Although efforts have been made by the government to reform agricultural education and encourage youth participation, there is still insufficient evidence on how effective these educational interventions are in influencing students’ interest in farming and contributing to food security, particularly at the secondary school level.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to examine whether agricultural education in secondary schools in Nigeria significantly influences students’ interest in farming and contributes to food security. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the impact of agricultural education on students and its implications for sustainable food production.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of agricultural education on students’ interest in farming and food security in secondary schools in Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the influence of agricultural education on students’ interest in farming.
2. Examine the role of agricultural education in promoting food security.
3. Identify factors affecting the effectiveness of agricultural education in secondary schools.
4. Determine the relationship between agricultural education and students’ practical farming skills.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between agricultural education and students’ interest in farming and food security in secondary schools in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of agricultural education on students’ interest in farming and food security in secondary schools in Nigeria. It will examine students, teachers, and school environments as they relate to agricultural education.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Agricultural Education: The teaching and learning of agricultural concepts, skills, and practices in schools.
• Food Security: The availability and accessibility of sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.
• Students’ Interest: The level of enthusiasm and willingness of students to engage in farming activities.
