Project – The Spiritual Impact of Fasting and Prayer on Personal Holiness Among Nigerian Youths
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Fasting and prayer are two fundamental spiritual disciplines in Christianity, regarded as powerful means through which believers draw closer to God, cultivate personal holiness, and develop spiritual maturity (Palmer, 2013). These practices are deeply rooted in biblical tradition, with examples of fasting and prayer appearing throughout both the Old and New Testaments. For instance, Moses fasted for forty days and forty nights while receiving the law (Exodus 34:28), and Jesus Himself engaged in fasting and prayer for spiritual preparation and guidance (Matthew 4:1–2; Luke 6:12).
In contemporary Christian practice, particularly among Nigerian youths, fasting and prayer are widely employed as tools for personal and communal spiritual development. Nigeria, being a country with one of the largest Christian populations in Africa, has seen a rise in youth participation in spiritual activities such as prayer rallies, fasting programs, and church-led spiritual retreats (Ojo, 2016). Youth ministries, prayer camps, and conferences often integrate fasting and prayer as central components aimed at fostering moral discipline, spiritual discernment, and a closer walk with God. These practices are believed to empower young believers to resist temptations, develop self-control, and align their daily lives with biblical principles (Adeboye, 2018).
Despite the strong biblical foundation and widespread practice, there is ongoing debate about the depth of impact fasting and prayer have on personal holiness among youths. While some studies suggest a significant positive influence on spiritual and moral development (Chukwuemeka, 2019), others point to challenges such as lack of commitment, peer influence, and modern distractions, which may reduce the effectiveness of these spiritual disciplines. This underscores the need for empirical research to examine the relationship between fasting, prayer, and personal holiness among Nigerian youths, particularly in contexts influenced by modern societal pressures.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Personal holiness, defined as the pursuit of moral purity, obedience to God, and alignment with biblical principles, is a critical aspect of Christian life (Palmer, 2013). However, many youths in Nigeria face challenges in maintaining personal holiness due to peer pressure, exposure to secular lifestyles, and moral laxity in society (Okonkwo, 2017). Despite the popularity of fasting and prayer programs in churches and youth ministries, there is limited empirical evidence on how effectively these practices contribute to the spiritual growth and moral development of Nigerian youths.
Moreover, while church leaders and mentors emphasize fasting and prayer as essential spiritual disciplines, some youths may participate without understanding their true spiritual significance, thereby limiting the intended impact on personal holiness (Ojo, 2016). This gap creates uncertainty regarding whether participation in fasting and prayer translates into measurable improvement in moral conduct, spiritual awareness, and a consistent Christian lifestyle. Consequently, investigating the spiritual impact of fasting and prayer on personal holiness among Nigerian youths is essential for providing evidence-based guidance to youth ministries, pastors, and Christian educators.
1.3 Research Objectives
The main objective of this study is to investigate the spiritual impact of fasting and prayer on personal holiness among Nigerian youths. Specific objectives include:
- To examine the relationship between fasting and personal holiness among Nigerian youths.
- To assess the influence of prayer on moral discipline and spiritual growth among Nigerian youths.
- To identify challenges that limit the effectiveness of fasting and prayer in enhancing personal holiness.
1.4 Research Hypothesis
To guide this study, the following hypothesis is proposed:
H₀: Fasting and prayer have no significant effect on the personal holiness of Nigerian youths.
H₁: Fasting and prayer have a significant effect on the personal holiness of Nigerian youths.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are expected to benefit youth ministries, church leaders, Christian educators, and policymakers by providing insights into how fasting and prayer can be effectively used to cultivate personal holiness among youths. Additionally, it will contribute to the academic body of knowledge in Christian Religious Studies and inform strategies for designing impactful youth programs that integrate spiritual disciplines with practical guidance for moral development.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on Nigerian youths aged 15–30 who actively participate in church-based fasting and prayer programs. The study is limited to Christian denominations within urban and semi-urban areas, emphasizing the effects of these spiritual practices on personal holiness, moral discipline, and spiritual growth.
1.7 Definition of Terms
