Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Christian conferences have long been recognized as vital platforms for spiritual enrichment, leadership training, and the promotion of evangelistic initiatives within the Christian community (Okeke, 2018). These gatherings, which may range from national conventions to local workshops, provide opportunities for believers to deepen their understanding of Scripture, develop ministry skills, and engage in networking that enhances church growth and outreach activities (Adeyemi, 2019).

In Nigeria, large Christian bodies such as the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) regularly organize conferences that bring together pastors, church leaders, and lay members from various denominations (Ojo, 2016). These conferences often include plenary sessions, seminars, panel discussions, and workshops designed to equip participants with practical leadership skills and strategies for evangelism. By providing exposure to diverse ministry experiences, these gatherings aim to strengthen the capacity of Christian leaders and promote effective evangelistic outreach in both urban and rural communities.

Research indicates that participation in Christian conferences positively influences the spiritual growth, leadership effectiveness, and evangelistic zeal of attendees (Chukwuemeka, 2019). Participants often report increased motivation to engage in outreach programs, improved organizational skills, and greater commitment to church and community service. However, there are concerns about the consistency of outcomes, as some participants may attend conferences passively without applying the lessons learned, or the content may be more theoretical than practical (Ogunleye, 2018). This highlights the need to empirically assess the effectiveness of Christian conferences in promoting evangelism and leadership development among participants in PFN and CAN.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Leadership development and evangelism are critical for the growth and sustainability of Christian communities in Nigeria. While Christian conferences are widely perceived as instrumental in equipping leaders and mobilizing evangelistic efforts, there is limited empirical evidence on how effectively these conferences achieve these objectives (Okeke, 2018). Some church leaders and members attend these gatherings without significant transformation in leadership skills or evangelistic activities, raising questions about the content, methodology, and follow-up mechanisms of such conferences.

Additionally, challenges such as inadequate resource allocation, lack of targeted training for emerging leaders, and limited evaluation of conference outcomes may hinder their effectiveness (Adeyemi, 2019). Without systematic research, it is difficult to determine the extent to which PFN and CAN conferences contribute to actual improvements in leadership competencies and evangelistic impact. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the effectiveness of Christian conferences in promoting evangelism and leadership development, with a focus on participants of PFN and CAN gatherings.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of Christian conferences in promoting evangelism and leadership development. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the contribution of Christian conferences to leadership development among participants of PFN and CAN.
2. To evaluate the impact of Christian conferences on participants’ engagement in evangelism.
3. To identify the challenges that limit the effectiveness of Christian conferences in promoting leadership and evangelism.
4. To suggest strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of Christian conferences in equipping leaders and promoting evangelistic outreach.

1.4 Research Questions

The study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. To what extent do Christian conferences contribute to leadership development among participants of PFN and CAN?
2. How do Christian conferences influence participants’ involvement in evangelistic activities?
3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of Christian conferences in promoting leadership and evangelism?
4. What strategies can be adopted to enhance the effectiveness of Christian conferences in equipping leaders and promoting evangelism?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

To guide the study, the following hypothesis is proposed:

H₀: Christian conferences have no significant effect on the leadership development and evangelistic activities of participants in PFN and CAN.
H₁: Christian conferences have a significant effect on the leadership development and evangelistic activities of participants in PFN and CAN.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons:

• Church Leadership: The findings will help PFN, CAN, and other Christian bodies design conferences that effectively equip leaders with practical skills for ministry and evangelism.
• Policy and Planning: Church administrators and organizers can use the study to identify gaps in conference content, structure, and follow-up mechanisms.
• Academia: The research will contribute to the literature on Christian leadership development and evangelism in Nigeria, providing empirical data for future studies.
• Participants: Insights from the study may motivate attendees to actively apply lessons learned, enhancing both personal and communal spiritual growth.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on participants of Christian conferences organized by PFN and CAN across selected urban and semi-urban areas in Nigeria. It emphasizes the impact of these conferences on leadership development and engagement in evangelism, while also examining challenges and strategies for improving their effectiveness.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Christian Conferences: Organized gatherings of church leaders and members aimed at spiritual enrichment, leadership training, and evangelistic mobilization (Okeke, 2018).
• Leadership Development: The process of equipping individuals with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to effectively lead and manage ministries or church-related activities (Adeyemi, 2019).
• Evangelism: The act of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with others to foster spiritual growth, conversion, and discipleship (Chukwuemeka, 2019).
• PFN (Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria): An umbrella organization that coordinates and promotes the interests of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.
• CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria): The umbrella body representing most Christian denominations in Nigeria, promoting unity and collaborative ministry efforts.
