Project – Impact of Teachers’ Experience on Students’ Achievement in Biology in Secondary Schools in Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Biology is one of the core science subjects taught in Nigerian secondary schools and it forms a foundation for several science-related careers such as medicine, nursing, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science. It deals with the study of living organisms, their structure, functions, growth, evolution, and interactions with the environment. Despite its importance, students’ academic achievement in Biology has consistently remained below expectation in many parts of Nigeria, including Oyo State, as reflected in national examination reports such as WAEC and NECO results (WAEC Chief Examiners’ Report, various years).
One of the major factors believed to influence students’ achievement in Biology is the experience of the teacher. Teacher experience refers to the number of years a teacher has spent in the teaching profession, as well as the practical exposure, pedagogical skills, classroom management ability, and subject mastery acquired over time. Experienced teachers are generally expected to have better classroom control, deeper content knowledge, and more effective instructional strategies compared to less experienced teachers.
According to Darling-Hammond, L., teacher experience is a critical component of instructional quality because it influences how effectively teachers can adapt teaching strategies to meet learners’ needs. Similarly, Rice, J. K. noted that teachers tend to improve significantly during their first few years in the classroom as they gain more experience in managing instruction and understanding student learning difficulties.
In Biology teaching, experienced teachers are often better able to simplify complex topics such as genetics, cell division, respiration, and ecology through the use of appropriate examples, analogies, and instructional strategies. They are also more likely to identify students’ learning difficulties early and provide remedial support where necessary. In contrast, less experienced teachers may struggle with lesson delivery, classroom management, and effective use of teaching methods, which may negatively affect students’ understanding and performance.
However, in many secondary schools in Nigeria, including those in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, there is an uneven distribution of teaching experience among Biology teachers. Some schools are staffed with highly experienced teachers, while others rely on newly recruited or less experienced teachers. This disparity may contribute to differences in students’ academic achievement across schools.
Furthermore, factors such as teacher motivation, workload, professional development opportunities, and school environment may also affect how teacher experience translates into effective teaching outcomes. Despite these concerns, there is limited empirical evidence specifically focusing on the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement in Biology within Egbeda Local Government Area.
This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement in Biology in secondary schools in Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of Biology as a key science subject, students’ achievement in the subject has remained consistently poor in many Nigerian secondary schools. This persistent underperformance is reflected in both internal school assessments and external examinations such as WAEC and NECO. The situation has raised concerns among educators, parents, and education stakeholders.
One of the major factors believed to contribute to students’ poor performance is the variation in teachers’ experience. In many secondary schools, Biology is taught by teachers with different levels of teaching experience, ranging from newly recruited graduates to highly experienced educators. These differences in experience may influence how effectively Biology content is delivered to students.
In Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, there are indications that some schools are staffed with inexperienced teachers who may still be developing their instructional skills, while others have long-serving teachers with greater classroom experience. This imbalance may result in differences in teaching quality, classroom management, and students’ understanding of Biology concepts.
Furthermore, inexperienced teachers may face challenges such as difficulty in explaining complex topics, inadequate classroom control, and limited use of effective teaching strategies. On the other hand, experienced teachers may demonstrate higher competence in lesson delivery and student engagement. These differences may ultimately affect students’ academic achievement in Biology.
Although several studies have examined teacher-related variables in science education, there is still limited localized research focusing specifically on the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement in Biology in Egbeda Local Government Area. This creates a gap in knowledge that needs to be addressed.
Therefore, this study investigates the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement in Biology in secondary schools in Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement in Biology.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the level of teachers’ experience in teaching Biology in secondary schools.
- Examine the relationship between teachers’ experience and students’ academic achievement in Biology.
- Identify how teachers’ experience influences instructional effectiveness in Biology teaching.
- Investigate challenges affecting the effectiveness of teachers’ experience in improving students’ achievement.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
- What is the level of teachers’ experience in teaching Biology in secondary schools?
- What is the relationship between teachers’ experience and students’ achievement in Biology?
- How does teachers’ experience influence instructional effectiveness in Biology teaching?
- What challenges affect the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ achievement?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between teachers’ experience and students’ academic achievement in Biology in secondary schools in Egbeda Local Government Area.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between teachers’ experience and students’ academic achievement in Biology in secondary schools in Egbeda Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be significant to students, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and curriculum planners.
Students will benefit from improved teaching quality that may arise from better understanding of the role of teacher experience. Teachers will gain awareness of how their experience influences students’ learning outcomes and may be encouraged to improve professionally.
School administrators will be guided on recruitment, staff development, and allocation of experienced teachers to critical subjects like Biology. Policymakers such as the Oyo State Ministry of Education will use the findings to improve teacher training and professional development programs.
The study will also contribute to existing academic literature on teacher-related factors affecting science education in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. It focuses on Biology teachers and students in senior secondary schools. The study specifically examines the impact of teachers’ experience on students’ academic achievement in Biology. Other subjects and other local government areas are not included.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Teacher Experience: The number of years and professional exposure a teacher has accumulated in teaching Biology, including classroom practice and pedagogical skills.
Academic Achievement: The level of performance of students in Biology as measured through tests, examinations, and assessments.
Biology: A branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms and their environment.
Secondary School: A post-primary educational institution for students typically between the ages of 11 and 18.
