Project – Availability and Utilization of Science Laboratory Facilities and Its Effect on Biology Students’ Performance in Secondary Schools in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Science education plays a critical role in the development of any nation, particularly in achieving technological advancement and sustainable development. Biology, as one of the core science subjects in Nigerian secondary schools, provides learners with knowledge about living organisms, their structure, functions, interactions, and their environment. It serves as a foundation for careers in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, nursing, and environmental sciences. Despite its importance, students’ performance in Biology in external examinations such as WAEC and NECO has continued to fluctuate and, in many cases, remain below expectation in Nigeria, including Delta State (WAEC Chief Examiners’ Report, various years).
One of the major determinants of effective teaching and learning of Biology is the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities. Science laboratory facilities refer to the equipment, tools, materials, and infrastructure required for conducting practical science experiments. These include microscopes, slides, test tubes, reagents, preserved specimens, incubators, and well-equipped laboratory spaces. Laboratory work is essential in Biology because it helps students to observe, experiment, verify scientific concepts, and develop practical skills.
According to Ogunniyi, M. B., science learning becomes more meaningful when students are actively engaged in practical activities rather than passive reception of information. Similarly, Okebukola, P. A. O. emphasized that laboratory experience enhances students’ scientific literacy, reasoning ability, and conceptual understanding, especially in abstract science topics.
The utilization of laboratory facilities involves the actual use of available equipment and resources during teaching and learning processes. Even where laboratory facilities are available, their effectiveness depends on how frequently and appropriately they are used by teachers and students. Effective utilization allows students to participate in hands-on activities, conduct experiments, and connect theoretical knowledge with real-life scientific phenomena.
However, in many secondary schools in Nigeria, including those in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, there are challenges related to inadequate laboratory facilities, poor maintenance of equipment, overcrowded laboratories, and insufficient practical lesson time. In some cases, laboratories exist but are poorly equipped or not properly utilized, forcing teachers to rely mainly on theoretical teaching methods.
This lack of adequate laboratory exposure may negatively affect students’ understanding of Biology concepts and reduce their interest in science subjects. Students who are not exposed to practical learning may find it difficult to grasp complex topics such as genetics, respiration, photosynthesis, and ecological relationships.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and its effect on Biology students’ performance in secondary schools in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of Biology as a core science subject in secondary schools, students’ academic performance in the subject has continued to be a major concern in Nigeria. The persistent poor performance recorded in both internal and external examinations such as WAEC and NECO has raised questions about the effectiveness of teaching and learning strategies used in schools.
One of the key issues identified is the inadequate availability and poor utilization of science laboratory facilities. Biology is a practical-oriented subject that requires regular laboratory activities to enhance students’ understanding. However, in many secondary schools, laboratory facilities are either insufficient, outdated, or completely unavailable.
In Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, there are indications that some schools lack fully equipped science laboratories, while others that have laboratories do not utilize them effectively due to lack of time, inadequate supervision, or shortage of qualified laboratory personnel. As a result, students are often taught Biology theoretically without adequate practical exposure.
This situation may contribute significantly to students’ poor understanding of scientific concepts, low interest in Biology, and ultimately poor academic performance. Without hands-on laboratory experience, students may struggle to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life scientific applications.
Furthermore, previous studies have shown that laboratory-based learning improves students’ cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. However, there is limited localized empirical evidence focusing specifically on the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and its effect on Biology students’ performance in Warri South Local Government Area.
This research therefore seeks to fill this gap by investigating whether the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities significantly influence Biology students’ academic performance in the study area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and its effect on Biology students’ performance.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the level of availability of science laboratory facilities in secondary schools.
- Examine the extent to which laboratory facilities are utilized in teaching Biology.
- Investigate the effect of laboratory facility availability on students’ academic performance in Biology.
- Identify challenges affecting the effective utilization of science laboratory facilities.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
- What is the level of availability of science laboratory facilities in secondary schools?
- To what extent are science laboratory facilities utilized in teaching Biology?
- How does the availability of laboratory facilities affect students’ academic performance in Biology?
- What challenges affect the utilization of science laboratory facilities in Biology teaching?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and Biology students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Warri South Local Government Area.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and Biology students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Warri South Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and curriculum planners.
Students will benefit through improved understanding of Biology concepts when laboratory facilities are adequately provided and utilized. Teachers will gain insight into the importance of integrating practical work into Biology teaching.
School administrators will be guided on the need to equip and maintain science laboratories for effective teaching. Policymakers such as the Delta State Ministry of Education will use the findings to improve funding and provision of science laboratory resources.
Curriculum planners such as the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will also benefit by strengthening science curriculum implementation policies. The study will further contribute to existing literature on science education and laboratory-based learning in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. It focuses on the availability and utilization of science laboratory facilities and their effect on Biology students’ academic performance. The study covers senior secondary school Biology students and teachers. Other subjects and local government areas are not included.
