INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Herbal medicine has remained one of the oldest and most widely used forms of healthcare across the world, particularly in developing countries. It involves the use of plant-based materials such as leaves, roots, bark, seeds, and extracts for the prevention and treatment of diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2019), about 80% of people in developing countries depend on traditional medicine, including herbal remedies, for their primary healthcare needs. This high reliance is largely due to affordability, accessibility, cultural acceptance, and perceived effectiveness.

In Nigeria, herbal medicine plays a crucial role in healthcare delivery, especially in rural communities where access to modern healthcare facilities is limited. Rural dwellers often rely on traditional healers and herbal practitioners as their first point of contact for treatment. These practices are deeply rooted in cultural heritage and are passed down through generations. In many cases, herbal medicine is used alongside orthodox medicine, a practice known as medical pluralism.

Christianity, on the other hand, is one of the dominant religions in Nigeria and significantly influences beliefs, values, and lifestyle choices, including health-related decisions. Over the years, Christian teachings—particularly within Pentecostal and evangelical movements—have shaped how believers perceive illness, healing, and spiritual wellbeing. Many churches emphasize divine healing through prayer, fasting, and spiritual intervention, sometimes discouraging reliance on traditional or herbal medicine, which is often associated with spiritual contamination or idol worship.

However, despite these teachings, the perception and use of herbal medicine among rural Christians remain complex and diverse. Some believers fully reject herbal medicine due to doctrinal teachings, while others accept and use it, seeing it as part of God’s natural provision for healing. This mixed perception reflects a tension between religious doctrine, cultural traditions, and practical healthcare needs.

Spiritual beliefs also play a significant role in shaping health behaviour. In many rural Christian communities, illnesses are sometimes interpreted as spiritual attacks, punishment, or consequences of sin. Such interpretations influence whether individuals seek prayer from pastors, visit herbal practitioners, or combine both approaches. This spiritual dimension often affects how herbal medicine is perceived—either as a blessing from nature or as something spiritually questionable depending on church teachings.

In rural Nigerian communities, such as Ogene Zaria in Kaduna State, limited access to healthcare facilities further complicates the situation. Many residents depend on both church-based healing practices and herbal remedies for survival. The perception of herbal medicine is therefore shaped by a combination of church doctrines, personal beliefs, cultural upbringing, and economic factors.

Understanding how rural Christians perceive herbal medicine use is important for bridging the gap between faith and healthcare practices. It also provides insight into how religious teachings and spiritual beliefs can either promote or discourage the acceptance of herbal medicine in rural settings.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing attention given to modern healthcare systems in Nigeria, herbal medicine remains widely used among rural populations, including Christians. In many rural Christian communities, there is a noticeable inconsistency between church teachings and actual health practices. While some churches strongly discourage the use of herbal medicine, many members still engage in its use either secretly or openly.

The problem lies in the conflicting perceptions created by church teachings and spiritual beliefs. On one hand, certain Christian doctrines portray herbal medicine as incompatible with faith in God, associating it with traditional spiritual practices that may be considered unholy or unsafe. On the other hand, some believers interpret herbal medicine as part of God’s creation, meant for human healing, thereby justifying its use alongside prayer and spiritual intervention.

This contradiction creates confusion among rural Christians regarding the acceptability and safety of herbal medicine. As a result, individuals often make health decisions based on personal interpretation rather than structured guidance from religious or medical authorities. This situation may lead to delayed medical treatment, misuse of herbal remedies, or reliance solely on spiritual healing even in serious health conditions.

Furthermore, there is limited empirical evidence on how church teachings and spiritual beliefs directly influence the perception of herbal medicine among rural Christians in Nigeria. Most existing studies focus broadly on traditional medicine use without adequately examining the religious dimension, particularly the role of Christian doctrines and spiritual worldview in shaping perceptions.

In rural communities like Ogene Zaria, where access to modern healthcare is limited, understanding these perceptions becomes even more critical. The lack of clear alignment between religious teachings and health practices contributes to ongoing uncertainty about the legitimacy and safety of herbal medicine use among Christians.

Therefore, the problem of this study is the unclear and conflicting perception of herbal medicine among rural Christians, influenced by church teachings and spiritual beliefs, and how this affects their acceptance and use of herbal medicine.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the perception of herbal medicine use among rural Christians and the role of church teachings and spiritual beliefs.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess rural Christians’ perception of herbal medicine use.
2. Examine the influence of church teachings on the acceptance of herbal medicine.
3. Determine the role of spiritual beliefs in shaping attitudes toward herbal medicine.
4. Identify factors that influence the use or rejection of herbal medicine among rural Christians.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Church teachings and spiritual beliefs have no significant influence on the perception of herbal medicine use among rural Christians.
H₁: Church teachings and spiritual beliefs have a significant influence on the perception of herbal medicine use among rural Christians.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to academic knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the intersection between religion and traditional healthcare practices in rural Christian communities.

Second, the study will help church leaders understand how their teachings influence health-related decisions among members, thereby promoting balanced messages that consider both faith and health realities.

Third, healthcare practitioners and policymakers will benefit from the findings by gaining insight into how religious beliefs shape health-seeking behaviour, enabling them to design culturally sensitive health interventions.

Fourth, the study will assist traditional herbal practitioners in understanding how religious perceptions affect acceptance of their services among Christian populations.

Finally, it serves as a reference for future researchers interested in religion, health behaviour, and traditional medicine in Africa.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on rural Christian communities and examines how church teachings and spiritual beliefs influence the perception of herbal medicine use. It is limited to selected rural Christian populations and does not extend to urban communities or other religious groups.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Perception: The way individuals interpret and understand herbal medicine based on beliefs, teachings, and experiences.

Herbal Medicine: Natural plant-based substances used for treating and preventing diseases.

Church Teachings: Doctrines, sermons, and instructions given by Christian leaders regarding faith, healing, and health practices.

Spiritual Beliefs: Religious convictions about divine healing, spiritual forces, and supernatural explanations of illness.

Rural Christians: Christian believers residing in rural communities with limited access to modern healthcare facilities.
