Project – The Role of the Eucharist in Spiritual Growth Among Catholic Youths in Lagos
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Religion occupies an important position in human society because it shapes moral values, spiritual consciousness, attitudes, and patterns of behavior among individuals. Christianity, as one of the major religions in the world, emphasizes the spiritual growth and transformation of believers through worship, prayer, sacraments, and adherence to biblical teachings. Within the Catholic Church, the Eucharist is regarded as one of the most sacred sacraments and occupies a central place in the spiritual life of believers. Catholic doctrine teaches that the Eucharist represents the real presence of Jesus Christ in the form of bread and wine, instituted during the Last Supper and celebrated continually in the Holy Mass.
The Eucharist is considered the heart of Catholic worship because it symbolizes communion with Christ and unity among believers. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994), the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life” because all other sacraments and church activities are directed toward spiritual union with Christ through the Eucharist. Participation in the Eucharist is expected to strengthen the faith, moral discipline, and spiritual commitment of believers. For Catholic youths, regular reception of the Eucharist is believed to deepen their relationship with God, encourage holy living, and promote active participation in the mission of the Church.
Spiritual growth refers to the gradual development of an individual’s relationship with God, understanding of Christian teachings, commitment to religious practices, and demonstration of godly character. It involves increased faith, prayer life, obedience to Christian values, and participation in religious activities. Spiritual growth among youths is particularly important because adolescence and young adulthood are stages characterized by identity formation, peer influence, emotional challenges, and exposure to societal pressures. Catholic youths require spiritual guidance and support to help them remain steadfast in faith and resist negative influences within society.
The Catholic Church has long recognized the Eucharist as a means of spiritual nourishment for young people. Through participation in Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration, Holy Communion, and other liturgical activities, youths are expected to experience spiritual renewal and moral transformation. Pope John Paul II (2003) emphasized that the Eucharist strengthens believers spiritually and draws them closer to Christ, thereby enabling them to live according to Christian teachings. Similarly, Pope Benedict XVI (2007) described the Eucharist as a sacrament that transforms individuals spiritually and empowers them to become witnesses of Christ in society.
In Nigeria, particularly in urban areas such as Lagos, Catholic youths face numerous social, cultural, and moral challenges that may hinder their spiritual growth. Lagos is one of the most populated and economically active cities in Nigeria, characterized by modernization, technological advancement, social diversity, and intense exposure to secular influences. Many youths are influenced by social media, peer pressure, materialism, internet addiction, substance abuse, cultism, and moral decadence, which may weaken their commitment to spiritual activities and Christian values. As a result, there is growing concern among church leaders, parents, and educators regarding the declining spiritual commitment of some Catholic youths despite their active participation in church activities.
Although many Catholic youths attend Mass regularly and receive Holy Communion, some still engage in behaviors that contradict Christian teachings, including dishonesty, sexual immorality, disrespect for authority, examination malpractice, and involvement in social vices. This situation has raised questions regarding whether participation in the Eucharist truly contributes to spiritual growth among Catholic youths or whether the sacrament is merely observed as a religious routine without deep spiritual transformation. The concern is further heightened by the observation that some youths demonstrate limited understanding of the spiritual significance of the Eucharist and may participate in the sacrament without adequate preparation, reverence, or commitment to Christian living.
Furthermore, the Eucharist is not only intended to strengthen personal spirituality but also to promote unity, love, forgiveness, humility, and service among believers. Catholic teachings emphasize that those who receive the Eucharist should reflect Christ-like behavior in their relationships with others. However, the increasing rate of moral decline among some youths suggests that there may be a gap between Eucharistic participation and practical Christian living. This raises important concerns regarding the effectiveness of Eucharistic teachings and spiritual formation programs targeted at Catholic youths in Lagos.
The role of the Church in promoting Eucharistic spirituality among youths is also significant. Priests, catechists, youth leaders, and parents are expected to guide young people toward deeper appreciation and understanding of the Eucharist. Activities such as catechism classes, retreats, Eucharistic congresses, Bible studies, youth fellowships, and Eucharistic adoration are organized to strengthen the spiritual lives of Catholic youths. Nevertheless, inadequate youth engagement, lack of effective spiritual mentorship, and poor participation in church programs may reduce the impact of these initiatives on youths’ spiritual growth.
Scholars have highlighted the importance of the Eucharist in Christian spirituality and faith development. Ojo (2019) noted that regular participation in the Eucharist contributes significantly to moral discipline and spiritual maturity among Catholic youths. Similarly, Eze (2021) observed that youths who actively participate in Eucharistic celebrations tend to demonstrate stronger commitment to prayer, church activities, and Christian moral values. Despite these findings, there remains limited empirical research specifically focusing on the role of the Eucharist in spiritual growth among Catholic youths in Lagos.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the role of the Eucharist in spiritual growth among Catholic youths in Lagos. The study intends to determine whether participation in the Eucharist contributes significantly to the faith development, moral behavior, and spiritual commitment of Catholic youths. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to theological knowledge, youth ministry development, and spiritual formation strategies within the Catholic Church.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Eucharist occupies a central position in Catholic worship and is regarded as an important means of spiritual nourishment and communion with God. Catholic doctrine teaches that participation in the Eucharist strengthens believers spiritually, deepens their faith, and encourages them to live according to Christian teachings. Consequently, Catholic youths are encouraged to participate actively in Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly as part of their spiritual formation and growth.
Despite the emphasis placed on the Eucharist within the Catholic Church, there appears to be increasing concern regarding the spiritual condition and moral behavior of many Catholic youths in Lagos. Many youths who regularly attend Mass and receive Holy Communion still engage in activities that contradict Christian teachings, such as dishonesty, examination malpractice, internet fraud, substance abuse, sexual immorality, violence, disrespect for authority, and other forms of moral misconduct. This situation raises questions concerning the extent to which participation in the Eucharist contributes to genuine spiritual growth among Catholic youths.
In addition, many Catholic youths are increasingly influenced by secularism, social media, peer pressure, materialism, and modern societal values that may weaken their commitment to spiritual activities and Christian principles. Some youths attend church services primarily because of parental pressure or social obligation rather than personal conviction and spiritual commitment. As a result, participation in the Eucharist may become a mere religious ritual without meaningful spiritual transformation.
Another problem is that some Catholic youths may lack adequate understanding of the theological significance and spiritual benefits of the Eucharist. Insufficient catechetical instruction, poor youth engagement programs, inadequate mentorship, and declining interest in religious activities may limit the effectiveness of Eucharistic participation in promoting spiritual growth. Furthermore, some parents and church leaders may not provide sufficient support and guidance necessary for sustaining the spiritual lives of youths.
Although previous studies have examined Christian spirituality and youth development, limited research has specifically focused on the role of the Eucharist in spiritual growth among Catholic youths in Lagos. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to address. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether the Eucharist significantly influences spiritual growth among Catholic youths in Lagos.
