INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Stylistics is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the systematic study of style in language use, especially in literary texts. It examines how writers manipulate linguistic resources such as diction, syntax, imagery, tone, and narrative techniques to create meaning and achieve specific effects on readers. According to Leech and Short (2007), stylistics provides a bridge between linguistics and literary criticism by offering an objective framework for analyzing literary language based on observable linguistic evidence rather than subjective interpretation. In the same vein, Simpson (2004) emphasizes that stylistics enables readers to understand how language choices in texts shape meaning, ideology, and reader response.

In literary studies, stylistics has become an important tool for analyzing how writers construct identity, power relations, and social realities through language. This is particularly significant in African literature, where language is often used not only as a medium of communication but also as a reflection of cultural values, traditions, and social struggles. African writers frequently engage with issues such as gender inequality, colonial history, religion, and social transformation, making stylistic analysis essential for uncovering deeper meanings embedded in texts.

Hausa literature, especially in Northern Nigeria, has developed into a rich literary tradition that reflects the socio-cultural and religious realities of its people. Within this tradition, women writers have emerged as important voices, offering perspectives that challenge patriarchal norms and highlight women’s lived experiences. These writers use fiction as a platform to represent issues such as marriage, polygamy, domestic struggles, education, and female identity. Their works not only reflect social realities but also contribute to shaping discourse on gender roles in Nigerian society.

Among prominent Hausa women writers, Razinat Muhammad and Hafsat Abdulwaheed stand out for their literary contributions. Their works often explore the complexities of womanhood within traditional and contemporary settings. Razinat Muhammad’s narratives frequently focus on emotional struggles within marriage and the psychological experiences of women, while Hafsat Abdulwaheed’s writings are known for their bold representation of female empowerment, resistance, and social critique. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Studies on Hausa women’s fiction often emphasize issues such as gender inequality, marriage, cultural practices, and female empowerment without adequately examining how language itself constructs these meanings.

In the case of Razinat Muhammad and Hafsat Abdulwaheed, their works have been widely discussed in relation to feminist themes and social commentary. However, there is limited scholarly attention given to how their stylistic choices—such as diction, sentence structure, imagery, narrative technique, and cohesion—contribute to the representation of gender. Specifically, the study aims to:

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected works of Razinat Muhammad and Hafsat Abdulwaheed. It focuses specifically on stylistic features such as diction, imagery, sentence structure, narrative technique, and cohesion in relation to gender representation. It does not extend to other authors or literary genres beyond Hausa women’s fiction.
