INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains a fundamental pillar of economic development in many developing countries, including Nigeria, where it contributes significantly to employment, food security, and rural livelihoods. Among the various agricultural enterprises, maize (Zea mays) is one of the most important cereal crops due to its versatility, high yield potential, and wide usage as food for humans, feed for livestock, and raw material for agro-industries. According to FAO (2023), maize is cultivated globally and ranks among the top three most important cereal crops, alongside rice and wheat, in terms of production and consumption.
In Nigeria, maize production plays a critical role in ensuring food security and supporting agro-based industries. It is widely cultivated across different ecological zones, including the derived savannah and rainforest regions such as Ogun State. Ogun State, located in southwestern Nigeria, has favorable climatic and soil conditions that support maize cultivation. However, despite its potential, maize yield in Nigeria remains relatively low compared to global standards due to factors such as poor soil fertility, inadequate farm inputs, and traditional farming practices.
One of the major constraints affecting agricultural productivity in Nigeria is soil fertility depletion. Continuous cultivation without adequate nutrient replenishment has led to a decline in soil quality, thereby reducing crop yields. Globally, there has been a growing shift towards sustainable agriculture, with emphasis on organic farming systems that minimize environmental impact while maintaining productivity. In developing countries like Nigeria, this shift is particularly important due to rising concerns about food security, soil degradation, and climate change. 1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of maize as a staple crop in Nigeria, its productivity in Ogun State remains relatively low compared to its potential yield. Many farmers continue to experience poor harvests, which affects household food security and income generation. One of the major challenges contributing to low maize yield is declining soil fertility caused by continuous cultivation without adequate nutrient replenishment.
Although inorganic fertilizers are commonly used to improve crop yield, their high cost and negative environmental impacts have limited their sustainability among smallholder farmers. In many cases, farmers either apply insufficient quantities or completely abandon fertilizer use due to financial constraints. This situation further worsens soil nutrient depletion and reduces maize productivity.
Organic fertilizers present a promising alternative due to their affordability, availability, and environmental benefits. However, despite increasing awareness of organic farming practices, many farmers in Ogun State are still uncertain about the effectiveness of organic fertilizers in improving maize growth and yield. Some farmers perceive organic fertilizers as slow in action or less effective compared to chemical fertilizers, leading to low adoption rates.
Another key issue is the lack of adequate empirical data on the specific effects of organic fertilizer application on maize production under the agro-ecological conditions of Ogun State. While several studies have examined organic fertilizer use in different regions, there is limited localized research that focuses specifically on maize performance in this area. This creates a knowledge gap for farmers, extension agents, and agricultural policymakers.
Furthermore, inconsistencies in application methods, types of organic fertilizers used, and variation in soil conditions make it difficult for farmers to determine the most effective practices for maize cultivation. Without clear scientific evidence, farmers may continue to rely on traditional practices that do not optimize yield.
Given these challenges, there is a need to investigate the effect of organic fertilizer application on the growth and yield of maize in Ogun State. This study is therefore necessary to provide empirical evidence that can support improved farming practices and enhance sustainable maize production in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of organic fertilizer application on the growth and yield of maize (Zea mays) in Ogun State, Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

- determine the effect of organic fertilizer on the yield of maize.
- compare maize performance under organic fertilizer application and non-application conditions.
- identify challenges associated with the use of organic fertilizers by maize farmers in Ogun State.

For policymakers, the study will provide evidence-based recommendations that can support agricultural development policies aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices and improving food security.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the effect of organic fertilizer application on the growth and yield of maize in Ogun State, Nigeria. It is limited to maize farmers within selected farming communities and does not cover other crops or states.
