INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors in Nigeria’s economy, providing employment, income, raw materials for industries, and food for the rapidly growing population. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, agriculture is predominantly rain-fed and highly dependent on climatic conditions. As a result, any variation in climate patterns has a direct and significant impact on agricultural productivity, especially among smallholder farmers who lack adequate adaptive capacity and modern farming infrastructure.
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperature, rainfall patterns, humidity, and extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change is largely driven by human activities such as deforestation, fossil fuel combustion, and unsustainable agricultural practices. These changes have increasingly disrupted agricultural systems globally, reducing crop yields and threatening food security, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where vulnerability is high due to reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
Globally, studies have shown that climate change has already reduced agricultural productivity in warmer regions, with Africa being one of the most affected continents. Ortiz-Bobea et al. (2020) estimated that anthropogenic climate change has reduced global agricultural productivity by about 21%, with the greatest losses occurring in tropical regions. This demonstrates that agricultural systems in Africa, including Nigeria, are highly sensitive to climate variability and extremes.
In Nigeria, agriculture is largely dominated by smallholder farmers who cultivate small plots of land using traditional methods. These farmers contribute significantly to national food production, yet they remain highly vulnerable to climate-related shocks. Increasing temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, delayed onset of rains, and early cessation of rainfall seasons have all been reported as major challenges affecting crop production across the country.
Benue State, often referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is one of Nigeria’s most important agricultural regions. The state is known for large-scale production of crops such as yam, cassava, rice, soybeans, maize, and groundnuts. However, in recent years, farmers in Benue State have increasingly experienced fluctuations in crop yield due to changing climatic conditions. Studies have shown that rainfall variability and increasing temperature levels have negatively affected planting seasons, crop growth cycles, and harvest outcomes in the region .
Furthermore, smallholder farmers in Benue State face multiple climate-related risks, including flooding, drought, soil moisture stress, and pest infestations. As a result, farmers are forced to adopt coping strategies that are often insufficient to fully mitigate the impacts of climate change on crop production.

For instance, studies have reported that irregular rainfall patterns and extreme weather events are major determinants of reduced agricultural output and food insecurity in the region . These conditions not only affect productivity but also threaten rural livelihoods and income stability.
Despite the importance of agriculture in Benue State, there is still a growing concern about how climate change specifically affects smallholder farmers’ crop production systems. Many farmers continue to rely on traditional knowledge and experience rather than scientific climate forecasts, which limits their ability to adapt effectively. In addition, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events has made farming more unpredictable and risky.
Given the central role of smallholder farmers in ensuring food security in Nigeria, understanding the impact of climate change on their crop production activities is essential. This study therefore seeks to assess how climate change affects crop production among smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria, with a view to generating evidence that can support effective adaptation strategies and policy interventions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the agricultural importance of Benue State, smallholder farmers continue to experience declining crop productivity and increasing production risks. One of the major factors responsible for this situation is climate change, which has altered traditional weather patterns and disrupted farming calendars.
Farmers in Benue State are increasingly confronted with unpredictable rainfall patterns, including late onset and early cessation of rains, which affect planting and harvesting periods. In many cases, crops are planted based on traditional seasonal expectations, only for rainfall patterns to change unexpectedly, leading to crop failure or reduced yields.
Another major problem is the increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as flooding and prolonged dry spells. Flooding often destroys farmlands, washes away seedlings, and reduces soil fertility, while drought conditions result in poor germination and stunted crop growth. These climate-related shocks significantly reduce agricultural productivity and increase food insecurity among rural households.
In addition, many smallholder farmers in Benue State lack adequate access to climate change information and modern adaptation technologies. Although extension services exist, their reach is often limited, leaving many farmers without timely weather forecasts or guidance on climate-smart agricultural practices. This information gap reduces farmers’ ability to respond effectively to climate variability.
Furthermore, soil degradation caused by climate stress, deforestation, and poor land management practices has further compounded the problem of low agricultural output. Combined with increasing population pressure and land fragmentation, farmers are now cultivating less fertile land under more difficult climatic conditions.
Although several studies have examined climate change and agriculture in Nigeria, there remains limited localized empirical evidence focusing specifically on smallholder farmers in Benue State and how climate change directly impacts their crop production systems. Most existing studies focus broadly on climate variability without adequately addressing its specific effects on productivity, yield stability, and rural livelihoods in the state.
This knowledge gap limits the ability of policymakers, agricultural planners, and extension workers to design targeted interventions that can help farmers adapt effectively. Therefore, there is a need for a comprehensive assessment of the impact of climate change on crop production among smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of climate change on crop production among smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the effects of climate change on crop yield among smallholder farmers.
- identify the major climate change factors affecting agricultural production in Benue State.
- assess the adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder farmers in response to climate change.
- determine the challenges faced by farmers in coping with climate change impacts.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant to smallholder farmers, agricultural extension workers, policymakers, and researchers. For farmers, the study will provide insights into how climate change affects crop production and possible adaptation strategies to reduce losses.
For extension officers and agricultural agencies, the findings will serve as a guide in developing effective climate-smart agricultural training programs. Policymakers will benefit from evidence-based recommendations that can support climate adaptation policies and food security strategies.
Researchers will also find the study useful as it contributes to the growing body of literature on climate change and agriculture in Nigeria, particularly in the Benue State context.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria. It focuses on the impact of climate change on crop production, including rainfall variability, temperature changes, and extreme weather events. It does not extend to large-scale commercial farming systems.
