Project – Evaluation of Mental Health Disorders Activities Among Youths in Mushin, Lagos
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health is an essential aspect of human well-being that influences how individuals think, feel, behave, and relate with others in society. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness but a state of well-being in which individuals realize their abilities, cope with normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their communities. Mental health disorders among youths have become a major public health concern globally, particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria where social, economic, and environmental challenges continue to affect the psychological well-being of young people.
Youths represent a vital segment of the population and are regarded as the future leaders of society. However, many youths experience different forms of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, emotional trauma, and suicidal thoughts. These disorders negatively affect academic performance, social interaction, productivity, and general quality of life. In recent years, there has been a growing increase in mental health-related activities aimed at creating awareness, prevention, counseling, and treatment services for youths. These activities include mental health campaigns, counseling programs, school health education, community sensitization programs, rehabilitation services, and support groups.
In many urban communities, mental health disorders among youths are associated with unemployment, poverty, peer pressure, drug abuse, family instability, social media influence, insecurity, and poor access to mental healthcare services. In densely populated areas such as Lagos, the pressure of urban living contributes significantly to emotional and psychological stress among youths. Mushin Local Government Area, one of the highly populated areas in Lagos State, is characterized by overcrowding, unemployment, inadequate social amenities, poverty, and increasing social challenges that may predispose youths to mental health disorders.
Mental health disorder activities refer to organized programs and interventions targeted at addressing psychological and emotional problems among youths within the community. These activities may involve health education, awareness campaigns, community outreach, counseling services, peer support initiatives, school-based interventions, and rehabilitation programs. The effectiveness of these activities depends on community participation, awareness level, availability of trained personnel, and government support. Despite several initiatives by governmental and non-governmental organizations, many youths still lack adequate knowledge of mental health disorders and available support services.
In Nigeria, mental health has often received less attention compared to physical health. Cultural beliefs, stigma, discrimination, and misconceptions about mental illness discourage many youths from seeking professional help. Some people attribute mental disorders to spiritual attacks or moral weakness rather than medical or psychological conditions. As a result, affected youths may suffer in silence without receiving proper care and support.
Furthermore, the rapid growth of technology and social media has introduced new mental health challenges among youths. Cyberbullying, online harassment, addiction to social media, and unrealistic societal expectations contribute to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. In communities like Mushin, where many youths face economic hardship and limited opportunities, these challenges may become more severe.
The evaluation of mental health disorder activities among youths is therefore important in determining the level of awareness, accessibility, effectiveness, and challenges of mental health programs within the community. This study seeks to examine mental health disorder activities among youths in Mushin, Lagos, in order to identify the effectiveness of current interventions and suggest ways of improving mental health services for youths.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health disorders among youths have become an increasing public health concern in many parts of Nigeria, especially in urban communities such as Mushin in Lagos State. Many youths experience emotional, psychological, and behavioral problems resulting from social pressure, unemployment, poverty, family instability, academic stress, drug abuse, and exposure to violence. Despite the increasing prevalence of these mental health challenges, awareness and understanding of mental health disorders remain low among many youths and community members.
In Mushin, several mental health-related activities such as awareness campaigns, counseling services, health education programs, and rehabilitation initiatives have been introduced by government agencies, schools, healthcare institutions, and non-governmental organizations. However, it appears that many youths are either unaware of these activities or do not fully participate in them. Some youths continue to suffer from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and emotional trauma without seeking professional help due to stigma, fear of discrimination, cultural beliefs, and lack of adequate information.
Another major problem is the inadequate availability of mental health professionals and facilities in many communities. Mental healthcare services are still limited and inaccessible to many youths because of financial constraints and poor healthcare infrastructure. In addition, the negative attitudes of society toward mental illness discourage open discussion and treatment of mental health disorders.
There is also limited research focusing specifically on the evaluation of mental health disorder activities among youths in Mushin, Lagos. Most previous studies have concentrated on the causes and prevalence of mental disorders without adequately examining the effectiveness of community-based mental health activities and interventions. Therefore, this study intends to evaluate mental health disorder activities among youths in Mushin, Lagos, identify existing challenges, and determine whether these activities are effective in addressing mental health problems among youths in the area.
