INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought remarkable transformation to the educational sector globally. One of the major areas greatly influenced by technological advancement is library and information services. Traditional libraries, which depended mainly on printed books and manual methods of information storage and retrieval, are gradually being replaced by digital library systems that provide electronic access to information resources. The emergence of digital library resources has revolutionized the way students access, retrieve, and utilize academic information in higher institutions. Academic libraries are now increasingly integrating digital technologies into their operations in order to support teaching, learning, and research activities effectively.
Digital library resources refer to electronic information materials that are stored, organized, and accessed through digital devices and internet technologies. These resources include electronic books (e-books), electronic journals (e-journals), online databases, institutional repositories, electronic theses and dissertations, audio-visual materials, internet resources, CD-ROM databases, and other online information materials accessible through computers and internet-enabled devices. According to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (2022), digital library resources provide users with faster and easier access to information irrespective of geographical location.
Academic libraries are established to support the educational objectives of higher institutions through the provision of relevant information resources and services. They serve as centers for knowledge acquisition, research development, and intellectual growth. In modern educational systems, academic libraries are no longer restricted to printed collections alone but now provide access to vast digital resources that enable students and researchers to obtain current and relevant information from different parts of the world. The integration of digital library resources into academic libraries has therefore become essential in meeting the changing information needs of students in the twenty-first century.
Students’ academic performance is one of the major indicators used in measuring educational success in higher institutions. Academic performance refers to the level of achievement attained by students in their educational activities, often measured through examinations, assignments, projects, continuous assessments, and overall academic results. Several factors influence students’ academic performance, including study habits, teaching methods, learning environment, availability of learning materials, and access to information resources. Among these factors, access to digital library resources has become increasingly important due to the growing dependence on electronic information in higher education.
Globally, digital library resources have significantly improved teaching, learning, and research activities in universities and other higher institutions. Through digital libraries, students can access scholarly materials online without necessarily visiting the physical library. Digital resources provide students with current, accurate, and reliable academic information needed for assignments, examinations, projects, and research activities. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (2021), digital learning resources contribute significantly to improved educational outcomes and academic achievement among students.
The use of digital library resources has transformed learning from a traditional teacher-centered approach to a more student-centered and independent learning process. Students can now access electronic information resources at any time and from any location through computers, smartphones, and internet-enabled devices. This flexibility enhances self-learning, independent research, critical thinking, and academic development. Digital resources also enable students to access up-to-date scholarly materials that may not be available in printed form within the library.
In many developed countries, digital libraries have become essential components of higher education systems. Universities invest heavily in electronic databases, online journals, virtual libraries, and institutional repositories to support academic excellence and research productivity. Studies have shown that students who effectively utilize digital library resources tend to perform better academically because they have access to current and diverse scholarly information materials. Digital resources also enhance collaboration, communication, and information sharing among students and researchers.
In Nigeria, the integration of digital library resources into higher institutions became more prominent in the late 1990s and early 2000s due to globalization, internet expansion, and technological advancement. Nigerian universities increasingly adopted electronic resources in order to improve access to information and align with international educational standards. The National Universities Commission (2020) emphasized the need for Nigerian universities to integrate ICT and digital library services into academic activities to improve educational quality and research development.
The introduction of digital library resources in Nigerian higher institutions has brought several benefits. Students now have access to electronic journals, e-books, online databases, and internet resources that support academic activities. Digital libraries have improved information accessibility, promoted independent learning, reduced reliance on outdated printed materials, and enhanced research productivity among students and lecturers. According to Abraham Tabor Etebu (2009), the availability of ICT and digital information resources in university libraries contributes significantly to effective learning and information accessibility.
Several empirical studies have confirmed the positive influence of digital library resources on students’ academic performance. Vera Ngozi Okonoko (2024) observed that students who frequently utilize electronic information resources demonstrate improved academic engagement and better research output. Similarly, Janet Onomeh Ubogu (2025) found that electronic information resource sharing among academic libraries improves students’ access to scholarly materials and enhances academic learning in higher institutions.
Despite the numerous benefits associated with digital library resources, many higher institutions in Nigeria still face challenges affecting effective utilization of these resources. Problems such as inadequate internet connectivity, irregular power supply, insufficient digital infrastructure, inadequate ICT skills among students, poor funding, low awareness of electronic resources, and limited access to computers continue to hinder effective utilization of digital library services. These challenges often reduce students’ ability to fully benefit from digital information resources available in academic libraries.
In Delta State, several higher institutions have made efforts to establish digital library services and provide electronic information resources for students. However, studies indicate that many students still encounter difficulties in accessing and utilizing digital resources effectively. Some students lack adequate digital literacy skills required for searching and retrieving online information. Others face challenges related to unstable internet services, inadequate computer systems, and poor electricity supply, which negatively affect the utilization of digital library resources.
The University of Delta Library is one of the academic libraries established to support teaching, learning, and research activities in the institution. The library provides access to printed and electronic information resources including textbooks, journals, electronic databases, internet services, and online academic materials. The library also operates an electronic library section equipped with computers and internet facilities for students’ academic use.
Although the University of Delta Library has introduced digital library resources and electronic information services, observations indicate that some students still experience challenges in accessing and utilizing these resources effectively. Some students depend mainly on printed materials despite the availability of electronic resources, while others may not possess adequate digital skills necessary for effective use of online information resources. These conditions raise concerns regarding the actual influence of digital library resources on students’ academic performance in the institution.
Furthermore, there is increasing concern about students’ academic performance in higher institutions, particularly in relation to access to current and reliable information resources. Since digital library resources are expected to improve learning and academic achievement, there is a need to critically examine the extent to which these resources influence students’ academic performance in the University of Delta.
Although several studies have examined ICT utilization and electronic information resources in Nigerian academic libraries, there is limited empirical research specifically focusing on the influence of digital library resources on students’ academic performance in the University of Delta Library. Most previous studies concentrated on ICT facilities, library automation, or resource utilization without adequately examining how digital resources influence students’ learning outcomes and academic achievement.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the influence of digital library resources on students’ academic performance in higher institutions in Delta State, Nigeria, with specific reference to the University of Delta Library.
