Project – The Effectiveness of Christian Counselling in Addressing Domestic Violence in Christian Homes
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence has become one of the major social and family problems affecting homes across the world, including Christian homes (Kolawole, 2019). Domestic violence refers to any form of abuse, mistreatment, intimidation, or harmful behavior directed toward a family member, especially between spouses. It may include physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and economic deprivation (Oakley, 2015). In many societies, domestic violence has led to broken homes, emotional trauma, poor child upbringing, and even death (Onwuasoanya, 2018).
Christian homes are expected to reflect love, peace, unity, patience, and mutual respect according to biblical teachings. The Bible emphasizes love among family members and encourages husbands and wives to live together in understanding and harmony. Passages such as Ephesians 5:25 instruct husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, while Colossians 3:19 warns husbands not to be bitter against their wives. Despite these biblical teachings, cases of domestic violence are still common in many Christian families today (Okon, 2017).
In recent years, domestic violence in Christian homes has become a growing concern for churches, counsellors, and society at large (Mordi, 2020). Some Christian couples experience constant conflicts, physical assaults, emotional abuse, threats, and other harmful behaviors that negatively affect family stability. In some cases, victims remain silent because of fear, shame, financial dependence, or religious beliefs that discourage separation or reporting abuse (Oakley, 2015). This situation has made many church leaders and Christian counsellors seek effective ways to address domestic violence among believers.
Christian counselling plays an important role in helping individuals and families overcome personal and marital problems through biblical principles and spiritual guidance (Hawkins, 2018). Christian counselling combines psychological counselling techniques with biblical teachings to promote healing, forgiveness, peace, and reconciliation. It aims to help individuals understand God’s purpose for marriage, improve communication, manage anger, resolve conflicts peacefully, and develop healthy relationships (Corey, 2017).
Christian counsellors, pastors, and church leaders often provide counselling services to couples experiencing domestic violence. Through prayers, scriptural teachings, marital counselling sessions, and spiritual support, Christian counselling seeks to restore peace and stability in troubled homes (Okon, 2017). Counselling may also help victims regain emotional strength and encourage abusive partners to repent and change their behavior.
However, despite the efforts of churches and Christian counsellors, domestic violence continues to exist in many Christian homes. Some counselling sessions fail because of poor communication, lack of professional counselling skills, cultural beliefs, stubbornness of partners, or failure to follow biblical teachings (Mordi, 2020). In some situations, victims may continue to suffer abuse even after counselling interventions. This raises questions about the effectiveness of Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the effectiveness of Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes. The study will also investigate the causes of domestic violence, the roles of Christian counsellors, and the challenges facing Christian counselling in resolving domestic violence issues.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Domestic violence has continued to threaten the peace, unity, and stability of many Christian homes despite biblical teachings on love, forgiveness, and peaceful living (Kolawole, 2019). Many married couples in Christian families experience physical abuse, emotional violence, verbal attacks, psychological oppression, and other forms of domestic abuse. These violent behaviors often result in broken homes, separation, emotional trauma, poor upbringing of children, and loss of spiritual commitment (Onwuasoanya, 2018).
Although churches and Christian counsellors provide counselling services aimed at resolving marital conflicts and promoting peaceful relationships, domestic violence cases still persist in many Christian homes (Hawkins, 2018). In some cases, couples repeatedly seek counselling without experiencing lasting peace or behavioral change. Some abusive partners refuse to change their attitudes despite counselling efforts, while some victims remain trapped in abusive relationships because of fear, shame, or religious pressure (Oakley, 2015).
Another problem is that some churches lack trained Christian counsellors with adequate knowledge and professional counselling skills to handle serious domestic violence cases effectively (Akinade, 2016). Some church leaders may rely only on prayer and scriptural advice without addressing the psychological and emotional aspects of abuse. Cultural beliefs and societal expectations may also discourage victims from speaking openly about domestic violence issues.
Furthermore, there is limited awareness among some Christian couples about the importance of Christian counselling in preventing and resolving domestic violence. Some couples only seek counselling when violence has already become severe. As a result, many Christian homes continue to experience conflict and instability (Mordi, 2020).
Therefore, the major problem of this study is to determine whether Christian counselling is truly effective in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes and to identify the factors affecting its effectiveness.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the causes of domestic violence in Christian homes;
- determine the effectiveness of Christian counselling in resolving domestic violence;
- identify the roles of Christian counsellors in promoting peace in Christian families;
- examine the challenges facing Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence;
- suggest possible solutions for improving Christian counselling services in Christian homes.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What are the causes of domestic violence in Christian homes?
- How effective is Christian counselling in resolving domestic violence?
- What roles do Christian counsellors play in promoting peace in Christian families?
- What challenges affect the effectiveness of Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence?
- What measures can improve Christian counselling services in Christian homes?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Christian counselling is not significantly effective in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to Christian couples, church leaders, Christian counsellors, researchers, and society at large.
The study will help Christian couples understand the importance of counselling in resolving marital conflicts and promoting peaceful family relationships. It will also encourage couples to seek counselling early before domestic violence becomes severe.
Church leaders and Christian counsellors will benefit from this study by gaining better knowledge of effective counselling strategies for handling domestic violence cases in Christian homes (Hawkins, 2018). The findings may also encourage churches to establish professional counselling units and organize marital seminars for members.
The study will contribute to academic knowledge in the field of Christian counselling and provide useful materials for future researchers who may wish to conduct further studies on domestic violence and family counselling.
Finally, the study will help society by promoting peaceful homes, reducing family violence, and encouraging healthy marital relationships based on Christian principles.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the effectiveness of Christian counselling in addressing domestic violence in Christian homes. The study will specifically examine the causes of domestic violence, the role of Christian counselling, the challenges facing counselling services, and possible solutions to domestic violence among Christian couples.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
During the course of this study, the researcher may encounter certain limitations such as inadequate finance, limited time, uncooperative respondents, and difficulty in obtaining relevant materials. However, despite these challenges, efforts will be made to ensure the successful completion of the study.
