INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The parables of Jesus Christ remain among the most profound teachings recorded in the New Testament because they communicate spiritual truths through relatable human experiences. Among these parables, the Parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15:11–32 occupies a unique position due to its rich theological message on forgiveness, repentance, grace, and restoration. The narrative presents the story of a younger son who demanded his inheritance from his father, departed to a distant country, wasted his possessions through reckless living, and later returned home in repentance. The father’s warm reception and willingness to restore the son despite his failures reveal the depth of divine mercy and unconditional love. This parable has continued to attract theological discussions, pastoral teachings, and scholarly interpretations throughout church history.

The Gospel according to Luke emphasizes the compassion of God toward sinners, outcasts, and the marginalized in society. Luke portrays Jesus Christ as the Savior who came to seek and save the lost. In Luke chapter 15, Jesus narrated three related parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. These parables were given in response to the criticism of the Pharisees and scribes who condemned Jesus for associating with sinners and tax collectors. The Parable of the Prodigal Son therefore serves as a climax of the chapter because it demonstrates the joy of restoration and reconciliation when a sinner repents and returns to God.

Exegesis involves a careful and critical interpretation of biblical texts in order to understand the original meaning intended by the author within its historical, literary, and theological context. The younger son was not merely pardoned but reinstated into the family relationship. This reflects God’s desire not only to forgive sinners but also to restore them into communion with Him. The parable equally exposes the attitude of the elder brother whose resentment and self-righteousness prevented him from understanding the father’s compassion. Modern society is characterized by broken relationships, moral decline, rebellion, hatred, and unforgiveness. Many individuals struggle with guilt, shame, rejection, and alienation from God and society. The message of forgiveness and restoration found in the parable provides hope for reconciliation and spiritual renewal. Churches and Christian leaders can apply the lessons of the parable in counseling, discipleship, evangelism, conflict resolution, and pastoral care.

In addition, the parable contributes significantly to Christian theology because it reveals important truths about God’s nature. The father in the narrative symbolizes God as loving, patient, compassionate, and ready to forgive. The younger son represents sinners who depart from God through disobedience, while the elder brother reflects religious individuals who depend on self-righteousness. Through these characters, Jesus communicates the universal need for repentance, humility, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Scholars and theologians have interpreted the parable from different perspectives including historical, literary, sociological, and theological viewpoints. Some scholars emphasize the repentance of the younger son, while others focus on the father’s extravagant grace or the elder brother’s attitude. However, the central message remains God’s unconditional love and willingness to restore those who genuinely return to Him. This study therefore seeks to conduct an exegetical analysis of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in order to examine its theological meaning and practical lessons on forgiveness and restoration for contemporary Christianity.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The issue of forgiveness and restoration remains a major challenge in both the church and society today. Many Christians profess faith in God yet struggle to forgive those who offend them. Broken relationships, family conflicts, church divisions, hatred, resentment, revenge, and rejection continue to exist among believers despite biblical teachings on love and reconciliation. The inability to practice genuine forgiveness has negatively affected Christian unity, spiritual growth, and effective ministry.

Furthermore, many people who have fallen into sin or moral failure often experience condemnation, isolation, and rejection rather than restoration within Christian communities. Some churches focus more on punishment and judgment than on reconciliation and spiritual recovery. This contradicts the message demonstrated in the Parable of the Prodigal Son where the father lovingly welcomed and restored his repentant son. The lack of proper understanding of biblical forgiveness and restoration has contributed to harsh attitudes toward repentant individuals.

Another problem is the widespread superficial interpretation of the parable among many Christians and Bible readers. Some interpret the passage merely as a story of a wayward child returning home without examining its deeper theological implications concerning God’s grace, repentance, reconciliation, and kingdom values. Such limited interpretations reduce the richness of the text and hinder believers from fully appreciating its significance for Christian living and ministry.

In addition, the spirit of self-righteousness portrayed by the elder brother remains evident among many religious people today. Some believers consider themselves morally superior to others and find it difficult to accept individuals who were formerly sinful or socially rejected. This attitude has created discrimination, hypocrisy, and exclusion within some Christian communities. The elder brother’s behavior in the parable serves as a warning against legalism and lack of compassion.

There is also the challenge of applying the lessons of forgiveness and restoration in practical Christian life. While the church teaches repentance and forgiveness, many believers still battle with bitterness, pride, anger, and unforgiving spirits. Consequently, there is a need for a deeper exegetical study of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in order to rediscover its theological truths and practical relevance for contemporary believers.

This study therefore seeks to examine the Parable of the Prodigal Son exegetically in order to understand its message on forgiveness and restoration and to explore how these lessons can contribute to Christian spirituality, reconciliation, and church growth in contemporary society.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to conduct an exegetical study of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in the Gospel of Luke and examine its lessons on forgiveness and restoration.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the historical and literary context of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11–32.
2. Analyze the theological themes embedded in the parable.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to several groups including theologians, pastors, Bible students, church leaders, and Christians generally. The study will contribute to biblical scholarship by providing an exegetical understanding of one of the most important parables in the New Testament.

The study will help pastors and church leaders understand the biblical principles of forgiveness and restoration which can be applied in counseling, conflict resolution, discipleship, and pastoral ministry. It will also encourage believers to develop compassionate attitudes toward repentant sinners and individuals seeking reconciliation.

Furthermore, the study will help Christians appreciate the depth of God’s grace and mercy toward humanity. It will challenge believers to practice forgiveness, humility, love, and reconciliation in their daily relationships.

The research will also serve as a reference material for future researchers who may wish to conduct further studies on the Gospel of Luke, parables of Jesus, forgiveness, repentance, and restoration.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on an exegetical analysis of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11–32. The study examines the historical background, literary structure, theological themes, and practical implications of the passage. Particular attention is given to the themes of forgiveness and restoration as revealed in the narrative. The study is limited to the Gospel of Luke and does not extensively cover all parables in the New Testament.

1.7 Limitation of the Study

The study encountered certain limitations. These include limited access to some scholarly theological materials and commentaries. Time constraints also limited the extent of the research. Despite these limitations, adequate effort was made to ensure that the study was properly researched and presented.
