Project – The Impact of Quality School Administration on Pupils’ Academic Performance in Selected Primary Schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is widely regarded as one of the most important instruments for national development and social transformation (Fafunwa, 1974). It serves as a foundation for economic growth, moral development, technological advancement, and political stability in every society (UNESCO, 2015). Primary education, in particular, occupies a strategic position in the educational system because it is the foundation upon which all other levels of education are built (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2013). In Nigeria, primary education is expected to equip pupils with literacy, numeracy, communication skills, and moral values necessary for lifelong learning and productive living (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2013).
The success of any educational system largely depends on the quality of school administration (Peretomode, 2001). School administration involves the coordination and management of human, material, financial, and academic resources within the school environment to achieve educational goals and objectives (Ibukun, 2004). Quality school administration refers to effective leadership practices that promote discipline, teacher motivation, proper supervision, adequate planning, maintenance of school facilities, and effective communication between school authorities, teachers, parents, and pupils (Adeyemi, 2010).
The school administrator, especially the head teacher in primary schools, plays a significant role in ensuring effective teaching and learning (Olagboye, 2004). A competent school administrator creates an enabling environment that encourages teachers to perform effectively and pupils to learn efficiently. According to Adeyemi (2010), effective school administration enhances teachers’ productivity and contributes positively to pupils’ academic achievement. Similarly, Ibukun (2004) observed that quality administration ensures proper monitoring of classroom activities, adequate utilization of school resources, and maintenance of academic standards.
Academic performance refers to the level of achievement attained by pupils in classroom tests, examinations, assignments, and other educational activities (Aremu & Sokan, 2003). Pupils’ academic performance is influenced by several factors, including teacher quality, learning facilities, parental support, school environment, and administrative effectiveness (Ajayi & Ogunyemi, 1990). Among these factors, school administration remains highly important because it determines how educational resources are organized and utilized to achieve educational objectives (Peretomode, 2001).
In many primary schools in Lagos State, especially in Kosofe Local Government Area, challenges such as poor supervision of teachers, inadequate instructional materials, overcrowded classrooms, poor communication, lack of motivation for teachers, and weak administrative practices have affected the quality of teaching and learning (Owoeye & Yara, 2011). These problems may negatively influence pupils’ academic performance. Some school administrators fail to properly supervise teachers and monitor pupils’ progress, leading to declining academic standards in some public primary schools (Adepoju, 1998).
Quality school administration promotes discipline, punctuality, accountability, and effective curriculum implementation (Peretomode, 2001). It also encourages teacher commitment and improves the learning atmosphere within the school environment (Adeyemi, 2010). According to Peretomode (2001), effective educational administration helps to coordinate school activities and improve educational outcomes. Where school administration is poor, there may be low teacher morale, poor academic supervision, examination malpractice, absenteeism, and poor pupils’ performance (Ibukun, 2004).
The government of Lagos State has introduced several educational reforms and policies aimed at improving the quality of primary education (Lagos State Ministry of Education, 2020). However, despite these efforts, the academic performance of pupils in some primary schools remains unsatisfactory. This situation has raised concerns among parents, teachers, educational stakeholders, and government authorities regarding the role of school administration in achieving educational excellence (Owoeye & Yara, 2011).
Furthermore, the importance of effective administration in primary schools cannot be overemphasized because pupils at this stage require proper guidance, supervision, and academic support (Fafunwa, 1974). A well-administered school is more likely to provide quality instruction, maintain discipline, and achieve better academic outcomes among pupils (Adeyemi, 2010). Therefore, there is a need to investigate how quality school administration affects pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area.
This study is therefore designed to examine the impact of quality school administration on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The quality of education provided in primary schools is greatly influenced by the effectiveness of school administration. Despite the importance of primary education in laying the foundation for future learning, many primary schools in Lagos State continue to experience poor academic performance among pupils. This poor performance has become a major concern to parents, teachers, school authorities, and government agencies responsible for educational development.
In many public primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area, pupils’ academic performance has reportedly declined due to several administrative challenges. These challenges include poor supervision of teachers, inadequate monitoring of academic activities, lack of instructional materials, ineffective communication, poor leadership style, inadequate motivation of teachers, indiscipline among pupils, and improper management of school resources. These issues may hinder effective teaching and learning, thereby affecting pupils’ academic achievement.
Another problem is that some school administrators do not effectively coordinate school activities or provide adequate support for teachers and pupils. In certain cases, head teachers fail to monitor teachers’ attendance, lesson delivery, and classroom management. This situation often results in low teacher commitment, absenteeism, poor lesson preparation, and reduced instructional effectiveness, which ultimately affect pupils’ learning outcomes.
In addition, many schools lack proper administrative planning and decision-making processes necessary for educational improvement. Poor maintenance of school facilities, overcrowded classrooms, and weak disciplinary measures have also contributed to poor learning conditions in some primary schools. Consequently, pupils may lose interest in learning, leading to poor academic performance.
Although several studies have been conducted on educational administration and academic achievement, limited attention has been given to the specific impact of quality school administration on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools within Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. This gap in knowledge has created the need for further investigation.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the impact of quality school administration on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State with a view to identifying administrative factors affecting academic achievement and suggesting possible solutions for improvement.
