CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The emergence of social media has transformed communication, interaction, learning, and information sharing across the world. Social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (X), Snapchat, and YouTube have become integral parts of daily life, especially among adolescents and young people. These platforms provide opportunities for communication, entertainment, academic collaboration, and access to information. In recent years, the widespread availability of smartphones and internet services has significantly increased the use of social media among secondary school students in Nigeria.

Social media refers to internet-based applications that enable users to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, messages, videos, and pictures within virtual communities and networks. According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media are a group of internet-based applications built on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content. Secondary school students are among the most active users of these platforms due to their developmental stage, curiosity, social needs, and desire for acceptance among peers.

Although social media has educational benefits, excessive use may result in addiction. Social media addiction is a behavioural addiction characterized by excessive concern about social media, an uncontrollable urge to use social networking platforms, and devoting so much time and effort to social media that it impairs other important life areas such as academic work, interpersonal relationships, and emotional well-being (Andreassen & Pallesen, 2014). Students who are addicted to social media often spend several hours online chatting, watching videos, posting updates, and engaging in non-academic activities instead of focusing on their studies.

Academic performance is an important indicator of students’ educational achievement and success. It reflects the extent to which students have attained educational goals through examinations, assignments, tests, and classroom participation. Good academic performance is influenced by several factors such as study habits, parental support, learning environment, motivation, peer influence, and effective time management. However, increasing attention has been drawn to the role social media addiction plays in influencing students’ academic outcomes.

In Nigeria, social media usage among secondary school students has risen rapidly due to increased internet accessibility and affordability of smartphones. In urban centres such as Lagos State, students have unrestricted access to mobile devices and internet services, making them more vulnerable to excessive social media usage. Ikeja Local Government Area, being a metropolitan and technologically advanced area, exposes students to digital communication trends at an early age. Many students spend substantial time online engaging in social networking activities, often at the expense of academic responsibilities such as studying, reading, and completing assignments.

Researchers have expressed concerns that excessive social media use negatively affects students’ concentration, reading culture, writing skills, and classroom participation. Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) observed that students who spend more time on social networking platforms tend to have lower academic performance compared to students who spend less time online. Similarly, Junco (2012) reported that excessive social media usage reduces students’ study time and negatively impacts academic achievement. Students who stay awake late at night browsing social media may experience fatigue, poor concentration, and reduced classroom engagement during school hours.

Despite these negative implications, some scholars argue that social media can positively influence academic performance when properly utilized. Social media platforms can facilitate group discussions, online learning, information sharing, and academic collaboration among students. For example, WhatsApp groups are often used by students to exchange class notes, discuss assignments, and receive educational updates from teachers. Therefore, the impact of social media largely depends on the manner and frequency of usage.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to addiction because of their emotional and psychological development. Excessive attachment to online interactions may result in poor time management, reduced face-to-face communication, anxiety, depression, and poor academic commitment. Secondary school students who prioritize social media activities over educational responsibilities may gradually develop poor study habits and declining academic performance.

In Lagos State, particularly in Ikeja Local Government Area, there have been increasing observations among teachers and parents concerning students’ obsession with social media. Many students appear distracted during lessons, engage in constant phone usage, and devote more attention to online entertainment than academic activities. This trend has raised concerns among educators, parents, and policymakers regarding the long-term educational implications of social media addiction among adolescents.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of social media addiction on the academic performance of secondary school students in selected senior secondary schools in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid advancement of technology and widespread use of smartphones have significantly increased social media participation among secondary school students. While social media serves as a useful communication and educational tool, its excessive usage among students has become a growing concern to parents, teachers, school administrators, and educational psychologists.

In recent years, many secondary school students spend a considerable amount of time on social networking platforms such as WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Instead of focusing on academic activities, many students devote long hours to chatting, watching videos, gaming, and browsing entertainment content online. This excessive involvement in social media activities has contributed to poor study habits, lack of concentration in class, reduced reading culture, procrastination, and poor time management among students.

Teachers in many secondary schools have observed that students often become distracted during lessons due to frequent thoughts about social media activities. Some students secretly use mobile phones during class hours, while others stay awake late at night browsing social media, resulting in fatigue and reduced academic engagement during school hours. Consequently, many students record poor academic performance in tests and examinations.

Furthermore, social media addiction may expose students to cyberbullying, emotional instability, peer pressure, immoral content, and reduced interpersonal communication skills. Excessive dependence on virtual interactions may also reduce students’ interest in educational activities and negatively affect their psychological well-being. Despite various school policies restricting phone usage, social media addiction among students continues to increase.

Although several studies have examined social media usage among students, there is still a need to investigate its specific influence on the academic performance of senior secondary school students within Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. This is necessary because students in metropolitan areas are more exposed to internet facilities and digital technologies than students in many rural communities.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to investigate whether social media addiction significantly influences the academic performance of secondary school students in selected senior secondary schools in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State.
