Project – The Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Academic Performance Among Adolescents.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education plays a significant role in the intellectual, emotional, social, and psychological development of individuals. In higher institutions, students are expected to develop academically while also building confidence, self-worth, and positive social relationships. Among the psychological factors that influence students’ academic success, self-esteem has received considerable attention from educators, psychologists, counsellors, and researchers. Self-esteem is considered an important determinant of students’ motivation, confidence, emotional stability, and academic performance.

Self-esteem refers to the value, confidence, respect, and perception individuals have about themselves. According to Rosenberg (1965), self-esteem is an individual’s overall positive or negative attitude toward oneself. It reflects how individuals evaluate their abilities, appearance, achievements, and personal worth. People with high self-esteem generally possess confidence in their abilities, maintain positive self-images, and demonstrate resilience in challenging situations, while individuals with low self-esteem often experience feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, fear, and self-doubt.

Adolescence is a critical stage in human development characterized by physical, emotional, social, and psychological changes. During this stage, individuals become more conscious of their identity, appearance, abilities, and social acceptance. Adolescents often seek approval from peers, family members, and society, making self-esteem highly important during this period. Positive self-esteem contributes to emotional stability, self-confidence, academic motivation, and healthy interpersonal relationships, whereas low self-esteem may lead to anxiety, depression, poor academic engagement, and antisocial behaviour.

Academic performance refers to the level of achievement attained by students in educational activities such as examinations, tests, assignments, presentations, and class participation. Academic performance is often used to measure students’ understanding, competence, and intellectual development. Several factors influence academic performance, including intelligence, study habits, parental support, learning environment, motivation, peer influence, and psychological well-being. Among these factors, self-esteem has emerged as a major psychological variable affecting students’ academic achievement.

Students with high self-esteem are more likely to participate actively in class discussions, complete assignments confidently, set academic goals, and persevere during academic challenges. Such students usually believe in their abilities and are motivated to succeed academically. In contrast, students with low self-esteem may avoid classroom participation, fear criticism, lack confidence in their academic abilities, and easily become discouraged when faced with academic difficulties.

Researchers have established that self-esteem significantly influences students’ academic performance. According to Baumeister et al. (2003), students with positive self-esteem tend to perform better academically because they possess confidence, motivation, and emotional stability necessary for effective learning. Similarly, Marsh and Craven (2006) observed that academic self-concept and self-esteem contribute positively to students’ academic achievement and personal development.

In higher institutions, students encounter various academic, emotional, and social challenges that may affect their self-esteem. These challenges include academic competition, peer pressure, financial difficulties, fear of failure, relationship problems, societal expectations, and adjustment to university life. Undergraduate students who experience repeated academic failure, rejection, criticism, or social isolation may develop low self-esteem, which could negatively affect their academic performance and emotional well-being.

In Nigeria, increasing concern has been expressed regarding the psychological well-being of adolescents in higher institutions. Many university students experience emotional stress, low confidence, depression, and anxiety arising from academic and social pressures. The highly competitive nature of university education places students under pressure to maintain good grades and meet expectations from parents and society. Such pressures may significantly influence students’ self-esteem and academic achievement.

Lagos State University is one of the major higher institutions in Nigeria with a large population of undergraduate students from different social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Students in the university are exposed to academic demands, peer relationships, social expectations, and various life challenges that may influence their self-esteem and academic performance. Some students demonstrate confidence, resilience, and positive academic attitudes, while others struggle with feelings of inadequacy, fear of failure, and low academic motivation.

Observations among adolescents in higher institutions indicate that many students experience emotional instability and low confidence due to academic difficulties, family challenges, social comparison, and peer influence. Some students withdraw from classroom participation because they feel inferior to others, while some become anxious and discouraged whenever they encounter academic challenges. Such psychological conditions may negatively affect their concentration, study habits, and academic achievement.

Furthermore, social media and modern societal pressures have increased the tendency for adolescents to compare themselves with others, thereby affecting their self-esteem. Many students become emotionally affected when they perceive themselves as less successful, less attractive, or academically inferior to their peers. These feelings may result in low confidence, poor academic engagement, and reduced motivation to excel academically.

Although previous studies have examined self-esteem and academic performance among students, there is still a need to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance among adolescents within specific institutional contexts such as Lagos State University. This is important because environmental, social, and academic factors differ from one institution to another.

Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance among adolescents studying at Lagos State University.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Academic performance among adolescents in higher institutions has become a major concern for educators, parents, counsellors, and policymakers. Despite efforts by universities to improve learning conditions and academic standards, some students continue to perform poorly academically. Several factors have been identified as possible causes of poor academic performance, including poor study habits, lack of motivation, financial difficulties, peer influence, emotional instability, and psychological problems. Among these factors, self-esteem has emerged as an important psychological variable influencing students’ academic achievement.

In recent years, many adolescents in higher institutions have experienced low self-esteem due to academic pressure, peer comparison, fear of failure, family expectations, and social challenges. Students with low self-esteem often doubt their abilities, avoid academic participation, and become discouraged easily when faced with academic difficulties. Such students may lack confidence in their intellectual capabilities and develop negative attitudes toward learning and school activities.

Observations among undergraduate students indicate that some adolescents experience anxiety, fear, emotional instability, and inferiority feelings that affect their classroom participation and academic engagement. Some students become reluctant to ask questions in class or participate in group discussions because they fear criticism or embarrassment. Others become withdrawn and isolated due to poor self-image and lack of confidence.

Furthermore, adolescents with low self-esteem may experience poor concentration, lack of motivation, examination anxiety, depression, and reduced interest in academic activities. These conditions may negatively affect their academic performance and overall educational development. In some cases, students who perform poorly academically may further develop lower self-esteem, thereby creating a cycle of academic failure and emotional instability.

In Nigerian universities, including Lagos State University, students are exposed to various academic and social pressures that may influence their self-esteem. Competition for academic success, societal expectations, financial difficulties, and peer influence often place students under emotional and psychological stress. Despite the growing importance of psychological well-being in education, many students still struggle with low self-esteem and poor academic confidence.

Although previous studies have examined self-esteem among students, limited attention has been given to adolescents in higher institutions within Lagos State. Moreover, environmental and social conditions in different universities may influence students’ experiences differently. Therefore, there is a need to specifically investigate the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance among adolescents in Lagos State University.

The problem of this study therefore is to examine whether self-esteem significantly influences the academic performance of adolescents studying at Lagos State University.
