INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The teachings of Jesus Christ continue to serve as the foundation for Christian faith, morality, and spiritual growth. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus emphasized virtues such as love, forgiveness, obedience, service, faith, holiness, and humility. Among these virtues, humility occupies a central position because it reflects the attitude of Christ Himself and forms the basis for genuine Christian living. Jesus not only taught humility through words but also demonstrated it practically through His lifestyle, relationships, and sacrificial service to humanity. According to Stott (2016), humility is one of the clearest marks of authentic Christianity and spiritual maturity.

Humility in Christianity refers to the quality of being modest, submissive to God, respectful toward others, and free from pride or selfish ambition. It involves recognizing dependence on God and treating others with love, respect, and compassion. Jesus consistently taught His followers to avoid pride, self-exaltation, hypocrisy, and the desire for worldly recognition. In Matthew 23:12, Jesus declared that “whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” This teaching highlights the spiritual importance of humility in the life of every believer.

Jesus demonstrated humility through His actions and interactions with people. He associated with the poor, served others selflessly, washed His disciples’ feet, and submitted Himself completely to the will of God even unto death on the cross (John 13:1–17; Philippians 2:5–8). His life became a practical example for believers to follow. According to Adeyemo (2015), the humility of Christ represents the ideal model of Christian character and spiritual discipline.

Spiritual development refers to the process through which believers grow in faith, obedience, character, and relationship with God. It involves increasing understanding of biblical truths, development of Christ-like behavior, commitment to prayer and worship, and obedience to God’s commandments. Spiritually developed believers are expected to exhibit virtues such as humility, patience, love, peace, faithfulness, and self-control in their daily lives. Willard (2014) explains that spiritual development occurs when believers consistently practice the teachings of Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to transform their attitudes and conduct.

The teachings of Jesus on humility contribute significantly to spiritual development because they encourage believers to depend on God, serve others sincerely, avoid pride, and maintain peaceful relationships. Humility helps Christians to accept correction, forgive others, cooperate with fellow believers, and grow spiritually through obedience and submission to God’s will. Humble believers are more likely to develop deeper spiritual understanding and stronger commitment to Christian living. Warren (2012) notes that humility is necessary for spiritual growth because pride often hinders believers from learning, repenting, and drawing closer to God.

In contemporary Christianity, humility remains an important but challenging virtue for many believers to practice. Modern society promotes self-glorification, competition, material success, fame, and personal recognition, which often contradict the teachings of Jesus on humility and selflessness. As a result, some church members struggle with pride, arrogance, selfish ambition, intolerance, and desire for superiority over others. These attitudes negatively affect spiritual growth and create conflicts within churches and Christian communities.

Furthermore, in some churches today, emphasis is placed more on prosperity, status, leadership titles, and public recognition than on humble service and Christ-like character. Some believers measure spiritual success by material possessions, popularity, or social influence rather than by humility and obedience to God. This trend has contributed to spiritual weakness, unhealthy competition, church division, and reduced commitment to genuine Christian values. According to Bonhoeffer (2015), discipleship without humility often produces superficial Christianity that lacks genuine spiritual transformation.

Jesus’ teachings on humility remain highly relevant in addressing the spiritual and moral challenges facing Christians today. Through His teachings and example, believers are encouraged to live selflessly, submit to God, serve others faithfully, and avoid pride. These teachings help believers develop spiritually and maintain healthy relationships within the church and society. The church therefore has an important responsibility to continually teach and encourage humility as a necessary requirement for spiritual development among members.

Despite the importance of humility in Christian living, many believers still struggle to practice it consistently. Cases of pride, rivalry, unforgiveness, selfishness, and lack of submission remain common among some church members. This raises concerns about the extent to which Jesus’ teachings on humility influence the spiritual development of believers. Therefore, this study seeks to examine Jesus’ teachings on humility and their effects on church members’ spiritual development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Jesus Christ taught humility as one of the major virtues necessary for Christian living and spiritual growth. His teachings emphasized selflessness, service, submission to God, love for others, and avoidance of pride. Believers are expected to practice humility in their attitudes, relationships, leadership, and daily conduct as evidence of genuine spiritual maturity. However, despite the regular teaching and preaching of humility in churches today, pride, selfish ambition, arrogance, and unhealthy competition continue to exist among many church members.

Many believers struggle with attitudes such as desire for recognition, superiority, intolerance, disobedience, and lack of willingness to serve others. Cases of church rivalry, leadership conflicts, disunity, jealousy, gossip, and personal pride are increasingly common in some Christian communities. Some church members seek positions, titles, and public admiration rather than focusing on humble service and spiritual growth. This contradiction between the teachings of Jesus and the attitudes displayed by some believers raises concerns about the level of spiritual development among church members.

Another problem is the increasing influence of worldly values on Christians. Modern society encourages self-promotion, material success, competition, and personal achievement, which often conflict with Jesus’ teachings on humility and sacrifice. Many believers measure success by wealth, fame, educational achievement, or social status rather than by spiritual character and obedience to God. Consequently, some Christians become proud, materialistic, and spiritually weak despite active participation in church activities.

In addition, some churches emphasize prosperity, miracles, and outward success more than spiritual character development and humility. Teachings on self-denial, submission, servant leadership, and modest living are sometimes neglected. As a result, many believers lack proper understanding of the spiritual importance of humility and its role in spiritual development. This has contributed to spiritual immaturity, lack of unity, weak Christian witness, and declining moral values among some church members.

Furthermore, pride and lack of humility often hinder believers from accepting correction, forgiving others, learning from spiritual leaders, and maintaining peaceful relationships within the church. Such attitudes negatively affect spiritual growth and weaken the unity of the Christian community. The inability of some believers to demonstrate humility according to Jesus’ teachings suggests that spiritual development among church members may not be adequately progressing.

Although several studies have examined church leadership, discipleship, and spiritual growth, limited attention has been given specifically to Jesus’ teachings on humility and their effects on church members’ spiritual development. There is therefore a need to investigate how these teachings influence believers’ attitudes, behavior, and spiritual maturity. This study is undertaken to fill this gap and provide better understanding of the role of humility in promoting spiritual development among Christians.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine Jesus’ teachings on humility and their effects on church members’ spiritual development.

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the teachings of Jesus concerning humility among believers;
2. determine the extent to which church members practice humility in their daily lives;
3. identify factors affecting humility among church members;
4. examine the relationship between humility and spiritual development among believers;
5. suggest possible ways of promoting humility for better spiritual development among church members.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What teachings of Jesus promote humility among believers?
2. To what extent do church members practice humility in their daily lives?
3. What factors affect humility among church members?
4. What is the relationship between humility and spiritual development among believers?
5. How can humility be promoted for better spiritual development among church members?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to pastors, church leaders, theology students, Christian educators, church members, and future researchers.

Pastors and church leaders will benefit from the findings of this study by gaining better understanding of the importance of humility in spiritual development and church unity. The study will help them develop effective teachings and leadership strategies that encourage humility among believers.

Theology students and Christian educators will benefit from the study as it will contribute to academic knowledge on Christian virtues, discipleship, and spiritual formation. The study will also serve as useful reference material for future theological studies.

Church members will benefit from the findings by understanding the importance of humility in Christian living and spiritual growth. The study will encourage believers to practice humility, servant leadership, submission to God, and peaceful relationships with others.

Future researchers will also benefit from this work as it will serve as reference material for further studies related to humility, spiritual growth, and Christian discipleship.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Jesus’ teachings on humility and their effects on church members’ spiritual development. The study examines biblical teachings on humility, their influence on believers’ spiritual lives and relationships, factors affecting humility among Christians, and the role of humility in spiritual development. The study is limited to selected churches and church members within the study area.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Study

Study refers to a careful examination or investigation of a particular subject.

Jesus’ Teachings

Jesus’ teachings refer to the instructions, principles, and doctrines taught by Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Bible.

Humility

Humility refers to modesty, selflessness, submission to God, and freedom from pride or arrogance.

Spiritual Development

Spiritual development refers to the process through which believers grow in faith, obedience, character, and relationship with God.

Church Members

Church members are individuals who belong to and participate in the activities and worship of a Christian church.
