Project – The Impact of Insecurity on Students’ Admission and Enrollment into Higher Institutions in Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as one of the most important instruments for national development, social transformation, and economic growth. Higher education, in particular, plays a critical role in producing skilled manpower, promoting innovation, and improving the socio-economic wellbeing of a nation. In Nigeria, tertiary institutions such as universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are expected to provide quality education that equips students with knowledge and competencies needed for national development. However, the achievement of these educational objectives has been greatly threatened by the growing insecurity in different parts of the country.

Insecurity has become a major challenge confronting Nigeria in recent years. The country has witnessed various forms of security threats including terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cultism, communal clashes, and attacks on educational institutions. According to Adebayo (2021), insecurity refers to a condition of fear, uncertainty, danger, and exposure to threats that affect the safety of lives and property. The persistent insecurity in Nigeria has negatively affected several sectors of the economy, including the education sector.

The educational sector has experienced severe disruptions as a result of insecurity. Many schools have been attacked, students kidnapped, academic activities suspended, and educational infrastructures destroyed. The activities of insurgent groups such as Boko Haram in Northern Nigeria have particularly created fear among students, parents, and school administrators. Yusuf and Ibrahim (2020) observed that insecurity has discouraged many students from seeking admission into institutions located in volatile regions due to fear of attacks and kidnapping. Consequently, enrollment into higher institutions in some parts of Nigeria has declined significantly.

Higher institutions in Nigeria are expected to provide a safe and conducive environment for learning. However, the increasing rate of insecurity around campuses has created serious concerns among parents and prospective students. Cases of kidnapping of students, attacks on school communities, armed robbery, and cult-related violence have made many parents reluctant to allow their children to study far away from home or in areas perceived to be unsafe. According to Okeke (2022), insecurity has altered the educational choices of many Nigerian students, as they now prefer institutions located in relatively peaceful areas.

Kaduna State has remained one of the states heavily affected by insecurity in Northern Nigeria. The state has witnessed frequent incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence which have affected both public and private institutions. Kaduna Polytechnic (Kadpoly), being one of the major tertiary institutions in the state, has not been completely free from the effects of these security challenges. The fear of insecurity within and around the institution has become a source of concern to students, staff, parents, and educational stakeholders.

Kadpoly attracts students from different parts of Nigeria because of its reputation as one of the leading polytechnics in the country. However, insecurity within Kaduna State may discourage prospective students from seeking admission into the institution. Parents are increasingly concerned about the safety of their children, while some admitted students may fail to resume due to security fears. In addition, insecurity may contribute to withdrawal from school, poor attendance, and reduced participation in academic activities. According to Nwankwo and Salisu (2021), insecurity not only affects access to education but also reduces students’ motivation and willingness to continue their studies.

Furthermore, insecurity creates psychological trauma, anxiety, and emotional instability among students. Students studying in insecure environments often experience fear and stress, which may negatively affect their academic concentration and overall educational experience. Ojo (2020) noted that the fear associated with insecurity can reduce students’ confidence in educational institutions and discourage enrollment into schools located in conflict-prone areas.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and educational authorities have implemented several security measures to address insecurity in schools. These include deployment of security personnel, installation of surveillance systems, and community policing initiatives. Despite these efforts, insecurity continues to pose serious threats to educational access and enrollment into higher institutions. This situation calls for urgent empirical investigation into the extent to which insecurity affects students’ admission and enrollment into higher institutions in Nigeria, particularly Kaduna Polytechnic.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of insecurity on students’ admission and enrollment into higher institutions in Nigeria with specific reference to Kaduna Polytechnic.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Insecurity has become one of the greatest challenges facing the Nigerian educational system. Over the years, the increasing rate of terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, and communal violence has created fear and uncertainty among students, parents, and educational stakeholders. Higher institutions located in areas affected by insecurity have experienced serious difficulties in attracting and retaining students.

Kaduna State is among the states in Nigeria that have witnessed persistent security challenges. Frequent attacks by bandits, kidnappings along highways, communal conflicts, and other violent activities have generated widespread fear within the state. These security challenges have raised concerns about the safety of students and staff of tertiary institutions, including Kaduna Polytechnic.

Despite the importance of Kaduna Polytechnic as one of the leading higher institutions in Nigeria, insecurity in Kaduna State may have negatively influenced students’ decisions regarding admission and enrollment into the institution. Many prospective students and their parents may avoid seeking admission into institutions located in areas perceived to be unsafe. Some admitted students may also refuse to resume studies due to fear of attacks, kidnapping, or violence. This situation may lead to decline in enrollment rates, reduction in student population, and poor academic participation.

In addition, insecurity may affect students psychologically by creating fear, anxiety, and trauma, thereby discouraging them from pursuing higher education in insecure environments. The problem becomes more serious as continuous insecurity threatens the realization of educational goals and national development.

Several studies have examined insecurity and educational development in Nigeria; however, limited studies have specifically focused on its impact on students’ admission and enrollment into higher institutions, particularly Kaduna Polytechnic. Therefore, this study intends to fill this gap by investigating how insecurity affects students’ admission and enrollment into Kaduna Polytechnic.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of insecurity on students’ admission and enrollment into higher institutions in Nigeria using Kaduna Polytechnic as a case study.

The specific objectives are to:
