INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is one of the most important social and religious institutions in human society. In Christianity, marriage is regarded as a sacred covenant established by God for companionship, procreation, emotional support, and mutual fulfillment between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24). The Christian family serves as the foundation of moral, spiritual, and social development within society. Consequently, peace, love, and harmony within marriage are highly emphasized in Christian teachings. However, despite the spiritual significance attached to marriage, domestic violence has become a growing challenge affecting many Christian homes in Nigeria and across the world.

Domestic violence refers to any form of abusive behavior within a family or intimate relationship that causes physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, verbal, or economic harm to another person. It includes physical assault, intimidation, emotional abuse, coercion, sexual violence, threats, neglect, and controlling behavior between spouses or family members (World Health Organization, 2021). Domestic violence cuts across social class, educational background, religion, and ethnicity. Contrary to popular assumptions, domestic violence also exists within Christian families and church communities.

In Nigeria, domestic violence has become a major social and public health concern. Reports from governmental and non-governmental organizations indicate increasing cases of spousal abuse, emotional violence, marital rape, child abuse, and psychological trauma within homes (National Demographic and Health Survey, 2018). Women are often the major victims of domestic violence, although men can also experience abuse in marital relationships. Domestic violence negatively affects physical health, emotional well-being, family stability, child development, and societal peace.

Contemporary Nigerian churches are expected to play significant roles in promoting healthy marriages and addressing family-related challenges among members. Christian marriage counsellors, pastors, and church leaders are frequently approached by couples experiencing marital conflicts and abuse. Marriage counselling within the Christian context involves providing spiritual guidance, emotional support, biblical teaching, and practical solutions aimed at improving marital relationships and family life.

Christian marriage counsellors are individuals trained either formally or informally to provide counselling services to couples and families based on biblical principles and counselling techniques. Their responsibilities often include conflict resolution, premarital counselling, emotional support, reconciliation, family therapy, and crisis intervention. In situations involving domestic violence, counsellors are expected to help victims access support, encourage healthy communication, promote safety, and provide biblical guidance concerning human dignity, love, and respect.

The Bible strongly condemns violence, oppression, cruelty, and abusive behavior. Scriptures such as Colossians 3:19, Ephesians 5:25, and 1 Peter 3:7 emphasize love, compassion, gentleness, and mutual respect in marriage. Christian marriage counsellors are therefore expected to uphold these biblical principles while addressing domestic violence within church communities. Counsellors often encourage forgiveness, repentance, reconciliation, patience, and peaceful conflict resolution while also emphasizing personal safety and accountability.

Despite the increasing awareness of domestic violence in Nigeria, many victims within Christian communities remain silent due to fear, stigma, cultural expectations, economic dependence, and religious pressure. Some victims believe enduring abuse demonstrates spiritual endurance or marital commitment. In certain cases, church teachings on submission, forgiveness, and marital perseverance have been misunderstood or misapplied in ways that discourage victims from speaking out against abuse (Nason-Clark, 2018).

Furthermore, some churches prioritize marital preservation over the emotional and physical safety of abused spouses. Victims of domestic violence are sometimes advised merely to pray, fast, endure suffering, or remain submissive without adequate professional intervention or protection. Such responses may unintentionally prolong abuse and increase psychological trauma for victims. This has raised concerns regarding the preparedness and effectiveness of Christian marriage counsellors in handling domestic violence cases appropriately.

The growing complexity of family problems in contemporary society has increased the need for professional counselling skills among Christian marriage counsellors. Domestic violence cases often involve emotional trauma, mental health challenges, economic hardship, substance abuse, anger management problems, and cultural influences. Consequently, counsellors require adequate training in both biblical counselling and modern therapeutic approaches to effectively support victims and rehabilitate offenders.

Christian marriage counsellors also serve as mediators between conflicting spouses. Through counselling sessions, they attempt to promote communication, reconciliation, emotional healing, and spiritual growth within marriage. However, counselling domestic violence cases differs significantly from ordinary marital disagreements because abuse involves power imbalance, fear, intimidation, and safety risks. Therefore, inappropriate counselling approaches may worsen the condition of victims rather than resolve the problem.

In recent years, churches in Nigeria have increasingly organized marriage seminars, family life conferences, counselling units, and awareness programmes aimed at strengthening marriages and reducing domestic violence. Pentecostal, Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, and other Christian denominations now pay greater attention to family counselling ministries. Nevertheless, reports of domestic violence among church members continue to emerge, indicating that existing interventions may still be inadequate in some cases.

Scholars have emphasized the importance of integrating professional counselling ethics with biblical principles when addressing domestic violence within religious settings (Fortune, 2011). Effective Christian marriage counselling should promote justice, emotional healing, accountability, empathy, and personal safety while maintaining biblical integrity. Counsellors should also collaborate with healthcare professionals, legal authorities, and social support organizations when necessary.

Another important issue is the societal and cultural perception of marriage in Nigeria. Many African cultural beliefs discourage separation regardless of the severity of abuse in marriage. Family members and religious leaders may pressure victims to remain in abusive relationships to protect family reputation or religious image. Such cultural influences can complicate the work of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence effectively.

Moreover, limited empirical research exists concerning the specific role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence within contemporary Nigerian churches. Most available studies focus broadly on domestic violence, gender issues, or family counselling without specifically examining the contributions, challenges, and effectiveness of Christian marriage counsellors in Nigerian church settings.

The increasing prevalence of domestic violence among Christian families therefore raises important concerns regarding the role, preparedness, and effectiveness of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing this problem. There is a growing need to evaluate how Christian marriage counsellors respond to domestic violence cases and the extent to which their interventions contribute to family safety, emotional healing, and marital stability.

This study therefore seeks to examine the role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches. The study aims to investigate the strategies, challenges, effectiveness, and biblical foundations of counselling interventions used in handling domestic violence cases within Christian communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Domestic violence has become a major challenge affecting many homes and families in contemporary Nigerian society, including Christian families. Despite the biblical teachings of love, peace, forgiveness, and mutual respect within marriage, cases of physical abuse, emotional violence, verbal assault, sexual coercion, and psychological trauma continue to occur among Christian couples. Reports of domestic violence among church members have generated concern regarding the effectiveness of existing counselling and pastoral interventions within Nigerian churches.

Christian marriage counsellors are expected to play significant roles in promoting healthy marriages and addressing family-related problems among church members. Through biblical teaching, counselling sessions, emotional support, and mediation, counsellors are expected to help couples resolve conflicts peacefully and discourage abusive behavior. However, despite the presence of counselling ministries in many churches, domestic violence continues to persist within some Christian homes.

One major problem is that some victims of domestic violence in church communities remain silent because of fear, shame, cultural expectations, economic dependence, and religious pressure. Certain interpretations of biblical teachings on submission, patience, and forgiveness sometimes discourage victims from reporting abuse or seeking help. Consequently, many victims continue to suffer emotional and physical harm without receiving adequate intervention.

Another problem is the lack of professional counselling training among some Christian marriage counsellors. In some churches, counselling responsibilities are handled mainly by pastors, elders, or church workers who may possess spiritual knowledge but lack adequate psychological or therapeutic training in handling domestic violence cases. As a result, some counselling approaches may focus excessively on reconciliation and endurance without sufficiently addressing issues of safety, trauma, and offender accountability.

Furthermore, societal and cultural beliefs concerning marriage in Nigeria often discourage separation or legal action against abusive spouses regardless of the severity of violence involved. Families and church leaders sometimes encourage victims to preserve marriage at all costs in order to protect family reputation and religious image. Such attitudes may unintentionally perpetuate abuse and undermine effective intervention.

The increasing complexity of domestic violence cases involving emotional trauma, substance abuse, economic stress, mental health issues, and technological influence also poses challenges for Christian marriage counsellors in contemporary churches. Many counsellors may not have sufficient resources, institutional support, or collaboration with professional agencies needed to handle such cases effectively.

In addition, there is limited empirical research specifically examining the role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence within contemporary Nigerian churches. Most existing studies focus generally on domestic violence or family counselling without paying adequate attention to church-based counselling interventions and their effectiveness.

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches with a view to understanding their contributions, challenges, and effectiveness in promoting healthy and violence-free Christian families.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to examine the role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the roles performed by Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence among church members;
2. investigate the counselling strategies used by Christian marriage counsellors in handling domestic violence cases;
3. assess the effectiveness of Christian marriage counselling in reducing domestic violence within Christian families;
4. identify the challenges faced by Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence; and
5. evaluate the influence of biblical teachings on counselling approaches toward domestic violence in Nigerian churches.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What roles do Christian marriage counsellors perform in addressing domestic violence among church members?
2. What counselling strategies are used by Christian marriage counsellors in handling domestic violence cases?
3. How effective is Christian marriage counselling in reducing domestic violence within Christian families?
4. What challenges do Christian marriage counsellors face in addressing domestic violence?
5. How do biblical teachings influence counselling approaches toward domestic violence in Nigerian churches?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between the role of Christian marriage counsellors and the reduction of domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between the role of Christian marriage counsellors and the reduction of domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to Christian marriage counsellors as it will provide deeper understanding of effective counselling strategies for addressing domestic violence within church communities.

The study will also assist pastors, church leaders, and religious organizations in developing more effective family counselling programmes and intervention policies aimed at reducing domestic violence among church members.

Victims of domestic violence may benefit from the findings of this study through increased awareness of available counselling support systems and biblical teachings that promote safety, dignity, and emotional healing.

The study will contribute to academic knowledge in theology, counselling psychology, sociology, and family studies by providing empirical information on church-based interventions against domestic violence.

Furthermore, policy makers and non-governmental organizations may use the findings of this study to improve collaboration between churches, counsellors, legal institutions, and social support agencies in addressing domestic violence.

Finally, future researchers will find this study useful as reference material for further studies related to domestic violence, Christian counselling, family therapy, and church ministry.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of Christian marriage counsellors in addressing domestic violence in contemporary Nigerian churches. The study will specifically examine counselling strategies, effectiveness, challenges, and biblical approaches used by Christian marriage counsellors in handling domestic violence cases among Christian families.

The study will be limited to selected churches and Christian marriage counsellors in Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Christian Marriage Counsellors:
Individuals within the Christian faith who provide counselling, guidance, and support to married couples and families based on biblical principles and counselling techniques.

Domestic Violence:
Any form of physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, verbal, or economic abuse occurring within a family or marital relationship.

Contemporary Nigerian Churches:
Modern Christian churches and denominations operating within present-day Nigerian society.

Marriage Counselling:
A process of providing guidance and therapeutic support to couples experiencing marital challenges.

Biblical Counselling:
Counselling that is based on scriptural teachings and Christian principles aimed at promoting spiritual and emotional well-being.

Emotional Abuse:
Behavior intended to manipulate, intimidate, humiliate, or psychologically harm another person within a relationship.
