INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Thanksgiving occupies a central place in Christian theology and practice because it reflects believers’ acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, mercy, and providence. Throughout the Bible, thanksgiving is presented not merely as an emotional response to divine blessings but as a spiritual discipline that shapes the believer’s relationship with God and strengthens spiritual maturity. Both the Old and New Testaments consistently portray thanksgiving as an essential expression of worship, obedience, and faith. Scriptures such as Psalm 100:4, Psalm 107:1, Philippians 4:6, Colossians 3:15–17, and 1 Thessalonians 5:18 emphasize that Christians are expected to cultivate grateful hearts irrespective of prevailing circumstances. Consequently, thanksgiving has evolved into one of the defining characteristics of authentic Christian living.

In Christian theology, thanksgiving extends beyond verbal appreciation to encompass a comprehensive lifestyle of gratitude, trust, obedience, generosity, and faithful dependence on God. It reflects believers’ recognition that every good and perfect gift originates from God and that human existence itself is sustained by divine grace. Theological scholars argue that gratitude toward God transforms believers’ perception of life’s challenges by shifting attention from present difficulties to God’s enduring faithfulness and future promises. Christian gratitude therefore nurtures spiritual confidence, reinforces hope, and strengthens resilience during seasons of adversity.

The concept of thanksgiving is deeply rooted in biblical history. In the Old Testament, thanksgiving formed an integral component of Israel’s worship, particularly through thanksgiving sacrifices, communal festivals, songs of praise, and public testimonies of God’s saving acts. David repeatedly encouraged believers to “give thanks unto the Lord” because His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136). The Israelites celebrated God’s deliverance from slavery, provision in the wilderness, victories over enemies, and covenant faithfulness through thanksgiving ceremonies that reinforced collective identity and dependence upon God. These biblical precedents illustrate that thanksgiving functioned not merely as ritual worship but as a theological affirmation of God’s continuous involvement in human affairs.

The New Testament expands this understanding by presenting thanksgiving as an essential mark of Christian discipleship. Jesus Himself consistently demonstrated gratitude before performing miracles, during the feeding of the five thousand, at the raising of Lazarus, and particularly during the Last Supper. Likewise, the Apostle Paul repeatedly instructed believers to “give thanks in all circumstances” because such gratitude reflects God’s will for Christians in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Paul further connects thanksgiving with prayer, peace, joy, contentment, and spiritual growth, suggesting that gratitude enables believers to maintain unwavering trust in God regardless of external circumstances. This theological framework positions thanksgiving as both an act of worship and a mechanism for cultivating enduring faith.

Faith, one of Christianity’s foundational virtues, refers to complete trust and confidence in God despite uncertainties and visible challenges. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Christian faith enables believers to rely upon God’s promises even when immediate realities appear discouraging. Thanksgiving reinforces this faith by reminding believers of God’s previous interventions and ongoing faithfulness. As Christians intentionally remember answered prayers, divine protection, and providential care through thanksgiving, their confidence in God’s future faithfulness increases. Thus, gratitude becomes an instrument through which faith is continuously strengthened and sustained.

Closely connected to faith is the theological virtue of hope. Christian hope differs fundamentally from ordinary optimism because it is grounded in God’s covenant promises and the certainty of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. Hope assures believers that present suffering cannot ultimately defeat God’s redemptive purposes. Biblical hope empowers Christians to persevere through trials with confidence that God remains actively involved in their lives. Thanksgiving contributes significantly to the development of hope because grateful believers focus not solely on temporary hardships but also on God’s enduring promises, thereby maintaining positive expectations even amid adversity. Recent theological scholarship highlights hope as a central resource for Christian perseverance, particularly when combined with gratitude and active participation in the life of faith.

Resilience has emerged as another important concept within contemporary Christian theology and psychology. Generally, resilience refers to the capacity to recover, adapt, and thrive despite adversity, trauma, suffering, or significant life challenges. Within Christian spirituality, resilience extends beyond psychological endurance to include spiritual steadfastness founded upon faith in God’s sustaining grace. Christian resilience enables believers to maintain spiritual commitment, moral integrity, emotional stability, and hopeful expectation despite experiencing illness, economic hardship, persecution, insecurity, bereavement, or personal disappointment. Scholars increasingly argue that religious faith and gratitude significantly enhance resilience by providing meaning, purpose, communal support, and confidence in divine providence.

The relationship between thanksgiving, faith, hope, and resilience has attracted growing scholarly attention across theology, psychology, pastoral counseling, and religious studies. Research indicates that grateful believers generally report higher levels of emotional well-being, optimism, spiritual satisfaction, social connectedness, and psychological resilience than those who rarely practice gratitude. Christian gratitude enables believers to reinterpret suffering within the broader context of God’s sovereign purposes, thereby reducing despair and strengthening perseverance during difficult experiences. Theological discussions similarly emphasize that gratitude nurtures virtues that sustain believers throughout life’s uncertainties and hardships.

Within Nigeria, thanksgiving occupies an especially prominent position across virtually all Christian denominations. Churches regularly organize annual thanksgiving services, harvest celebrations, family thanksgiving, birthday thanksgiving, wedding thanksgiving, child dedication thanksgiving, and thanksgiving following major life events. Many believers publicly testify concerning divine healing, financial breakthroughs, academic success, protection, employment opportunities, and family restoration during these services. Thanksgiving has consequently become one of the most visible expressions of Christian worship throughout Nigerian Christianity.

The significance of thanksgiving has become even more pronounced considering Nigeria’s contemporary socio-economic realities. Christians face numerous challenges, including economic instability, unemployment, inflation, insecurity, communal conflicts, health crises, displacement, and social uncertainties. Despite these difficulties, churches continue encouraging believers to cultivate thankful hearts, emphasizing that gratitude reflects unwavering confidence in God’s sovereignty rather than denial of life’s hardships. This theological emphasis suggests that thanksgiving serves not merely ceremonial purposes but also functions as an important spiritual resource for sustaining faith, preserving hope, and building resilience during prolonged adversity.

Benue State provides a particularly meaningful context for examining these relationships. Popularly known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” Benue State possesses a predominantly Christian population comprising diverse denominations, including Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, NKST, Baptist, ECWA, Pentecostal, and numerous independent churches. The state has experienced significant socio-economic and security challenges over the past decade, including farmer-herder conflicts, internal displacement, loss of livelihoods, poverty, and psychological trauma affecting many communities. Despite these persistent challenges, churches across Benue State continue organizing thanksgiving services that emphasize God’s faithfulness, restoration, healing, and future hope. These gatherings often provide opportunities for communal worship, emotional healing, encouragement, testimony sharing, and renewed spiritual commitment.

Selected churches in Benue State therefore offer an appropriate setting for investigating whether and how thanksgiving contributes to promoting faith, sustaining hope, and strengthening resilience among Christians. Understanding this relationship is particularly important because many believers increasingly depend upon their faith communities for spiritual encouragement, emotional support, and practical coping strategies amidst continuing social and economic uncertainties. Examining the theological and practical significance of thanksgiving within this context will contribute meaningfully to Christian education, pastoral ministry, practical theology, and religious scholarship by providing empirical evidence regarding the spiritual outcomes associated with thanksgiving practices among Nigerian Christians.

Accordingly, this study seeks to examine the role of thanksgiving in promoting faith, hope, and resilience among Christians, using selected churches in Benue State as the study area. The study intends to determine whether regular participation in thanksgiving practices contributes significantly to strengthening believers’ faith in God, sustaining hope during adversity, and enhancing resilience amidst life’s numerous challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Thanksgiving has remained one of the most visible and widely practiced aspects of Christian worship across the world and particularly in Nigeria. Virtually every Christian denomination organizes thanksgiving services to celebrate God’s faithfulness, divine protection, healing, provision, promotion, deliverance, and other testimonies of answered prayers. In many churches, thanksgiving services are held weekly, monthly, annually, or during special occasions such as child dedications, marriages, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, harvest celebrations, and the beginning or end of every year. These practices demonstrate the importance that Christian communities attach to gratitude as an act of worship and acknowledgement of God’s goodness. Theologically, thanksgiving is expected to deepen believers’ relationship with God, strengthen their faith, sustain hope during difficult times, and develop resilience in the face of life’s numerous challenges (Emmons & Stern, 2023).

Contemporary Christian theology further emphasizes that thanksgiving is more than an outward religious ceremony or emotional response to blessings received. Rather, it represents an enduring spiritual discipline capable of transforming believers’ attitudes, strengthening their confidence in God’s promises, and enabling them to persevere through adversity. Biblical teachings consistently encourage Christians to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), implying that gratitude should remain constant regardless of favourable or unfavourable conditions. Recent theological studies affirm that believers who intentionally cultivate gratitude often demonstrate greater spiritual maturity, stronger religious commitment, emotional stability, and positive coping abilities during crises (Schnitker et al., 2022).

Despite these theological expectations, observations within many contemporary churches suggest that thanksgiving is increasingly perceived by some believers as an activity largely associated with receiving material blessings rather than as a lifelong spiritual discipline. In many instances, thanksgiving services appear to be motivated primarily by financial breakthroughs, promotions, successful business transactions, healing, or other visible achievements. Consequently, some Christians may neglect thanksgiving during periods of suffering, unemployment, illness, disappointment, insecurity, bereavement, or economic hardship. Such selective expressions of gratitude contradict biblical teachings that encourage believers to remain thankful in every circumstance because of God’s sovereign purposes and abiding presence (Watkins, 2024).

Furthermore, Nigerian Christians currently face unprecedented socio-economic and security challenges that continually test their faith. Rising inflation, unemployment, poverty, insecurity, communal conflicts, kidnapping, displacement, family instability, and declining economic opportunities have created conditions that often generate fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and emotional distress among many believers. These realities have become particularly evident across several parts of the country where churches increasingly provide not only spiritual guidance but also emotional support, humanitarian assistance, counselling, and community solidarity. Under such circumstances, understanding how thanksgiving contributes to sustaining faith, nurturing hope, and building resilience has become both a theological and pastoral necessity (Koenig, 2023).

Benue State presents a particularly important setting for investigating this issue. Over the past decade, several communities within the state have experienced recurring farmer-herder conflicts, displacement of residents, destruction of farmlands, loss of livelihoods, insecurity, and significant psychological trauma. Since Christianity constitutes the dominant religion in the state, churches have continued to play vital roles in providing spiritual encouragement, emotional healing, humanitarian assistance, and communal support for affected members. Thanksgiving services frequently include testimonies of survival, divine protection, restoration, healing, and renewed hope despite persistent hardships. Nevertheless, there is limited empirical evidence demonstrating whether participation in thanksgiving practices actually strengthens believers’ faith, promotes hope, and enhances resilience within these difficult circumstances (Afolayan & Ojo, 2022).

Another concern is that while numerous theological writings discuss gratitude as an important Christian virtue, relatively few empirical studies have specifically examined the direct relationship between thanksgiving practices and the combined outcomes of faith, hope, and resilience among Christians in Nigeria. Existing Nigerian studies have largely concentrated on prayer, worship, spirituality, church growth, or religious participation, while giving comparatively little attention to thanksgiving as an independent theological variable influencing believers’ spiritual development and psychological well-being (Adeyemo & Adeyinka, 2023). Consequently, there remains an identifiable gap in the literature regarding the measurable contribution of thanksgiving to strengthening Christian faith, sustaining hope during adversity, and fostering resilience among church members.

Moreover, denominational differences may influence the understanding and practice of thanksgiving across churches. While some denominations emphasize thanksgiving as an expression of gratitude regardless of circumstances, others may focus more heavily on testimonies associated with miracles, prosperity, healing, and divine intervention. These varying theological emphases may shape believers’ perceptions of gratitude and influence how effectively thanksgiving contributes to their spiritual growth, emotional endurance, and commitment to Christian living. Without empirical investigation, it remains difficult to determine the extent to which thanksgiving genuinely promotes enduring faith, hope, and resilience beyond ceremonial observance.

The problem therefore is that although thanksgiving occupies a central position in Christian worship and theology, there is insufficient empirical evidence regarding its actual role in promoting faith, hope, and resilience among Christians, particularly within churches in Benue State where believers continue to experience significant social, economic, and security challenges. This knowledge gap limits theological understanding, pastoral counselling, discipleship programmes, and church-based interventions aimed at strengthening believers’ spiritual resilience during adversity.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the role of thanksgiving in promoting faith, hope, and resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the role of thanksgiving in promoting faith, hope, and resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the role of thanksgiving in strengthening the faith of Christians in selected churches in Benue State.
2. determine the influence of thanksgiving on promoting hope among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.
3. assess the role of thanksgiving in enhancing resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.
4. examine the overall relationship between thanksgiving practices and the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

1.5 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What role does thanksgiving play in strengthening the faith of Christians in selected churches in Benue State?
2. How does thanksgiving promote hope among Christians in selected churches in Benue State?
3. To what extent does thanksgiving enhance resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State?
4. What relationship exists between thanksgiving practices and the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Benue State?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between thanksgiving practices and the promotion of faith, hope, and resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be significant to several stakeholders, including church leaders, pastors, Christian educators, theologians, counsellors, Christians, researchers, and policy makers involved in faith-based development. The study will contribute to existing knowledge on the theological and practical importance of thanksgiving in nurturing spiritual virtues and strengthening believers’ capacity to cope with life’s challenges.

The study will be beneficial to pastors and church leaders by providing empirical evidence on how thanksgiving contributes to strengthening the faith, hope, and resilience of church members. The findings will assist pastors in developing balanced biblical teachings that present thanksgiving not merely as a response to material blessings but as a spiritual discipline that should be practiced in every circumstance. Such understanding will enhance discipleship programmes, sermon preparation, counselling ministries, and congregational spiritual formation.

The study will also benefit Christian educators and theological institutions. Seminaries, Bible colleges, and departments of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) will find the study valuable in enriching theological discussions on gratitude, Christian spirituality, practical theology, pastoral care, and Christian ethics. The findings may serve as relevant instructional material for students studying Christian worship, biblical theology, spiritual formation, and pastoral ministry.

The study will further be useful to Christians and church members by increasing their understanding of the biblical significance of thanksgiving. Many believers often associate thanksgiving primarily with periods of prosperity or visible blessings. This study will demonstrate that thanksgiving remains a biblical obligation regardless of life’s circumstances and that a grateful lifestyle strengthens faith in God, sustains hope during difficult times, and promotes resilience amidst trials. Such understanding may encourage believers to cultivate deeper trust in God’s faithfulness and develop greater spiritual maturity.

The findings will equally benefit Christian counsellors and pastoral caregivers who provide emotional and spiritual support to individuals experiencing grief, illness, financial hardship, family crises, insecurity, or psychological distress. Understanding the role of thanksgiving in promoting resilience may enable counsellors to incorporate gratitude-based biblical interventions into pastoral counselling, thereby helping believers develop healthier spiritual coping mechanisms and stronger emotional well-being.

Furthermore, the study will contribute significantly to theological scholarship by expanding existing literature on the relationship between thanksgiving and positive spiritual outcomes. Although numerous theological writings emphasize gratitude as an essential Christian virtue, relatively few empirical studies have investigated its influence on faith, hope, and resilience simultaneously, particularly within the Nigerian context. Consequently, this research will fill an important gap in contemporary Christian Religious Studies and practical theology.

The study will also be valuable to future researchers who intend to conduct studies on thanksgiving, Christian spirituality, positive religious coping, resilience, faith development, hope, pastoral theology, or Christian worship. The conceptual framework, methodology, empirical findings, and recommendations of this study may serve as useful reference materials for subsequent academic investigations.

Finally, the study may benefit faith-based organizations and community development agencies by demonstrating how biblical teachings on thanksgiving can strengthen emotional resilience, encourage social cohesion, and promote psychological well-being within Christian communities facing economic hardship, insecurity, displacement, or other social challenges. The findings may therefore support the design of faith-based interventions that integrate spiritual resources into community healing and resilience-building programmes.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of thanksgiving in promoting faith, hope, and resilience among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

The study is restricted geographically to selected churches located within Benue State, Nigeria. The choice of Benue State is informed by its predominantly Christian population and the increasing need to understand how spiritual practices such as thanksgiving assist believers in coping with persistent socio-economic and security challenges affecting many communities within the state.

Conceptually, the study is limited to the independent variable, thanksgiving, while the dependent variables are faith, hope, and resilience among Christians. The study will examine how regular participation in thanksgiving services and personal thanksgiving practices influence believers’ confidence in God, expectation of God’s promises, and ability to remain spiritually steadfast despite life’s adversities.

The study will involve pastors, church workers, and adult members drawn from selected churches in Benue State. Denominational differences will not constitute the primary focus of the study; rather, emphasis will be placed on understanding the overall contribution of thanksgiving to Christian spiritual life across the selected churches.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

For the purpose of this study, the following terms are operationally defined:

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving refers to the deliberate expression of gratitude to God through worship, prayer, praise, testimonies, offerings, songs, and daily Christian living in recognition of God’s goodness, faithfulness, mercy, and providence regardless of prevailing circumstances.

Faith: Faith refers to Christians’ complete trust, confidence, and dependence upon God and His promises, demonstrated through obedience, perseverance, and unwavering belief despite challenges or uncertainties.

Hope: Hope refers to believers’ confident expectation of God’s continued faithfulness, future blessings, divine intervention, and eternal promises through Jesus Christ, which enables them to remain optimistic during adversity.

Resilience: Resilience refers to the ability of Christians to recover, adapt, persevere, and maintain spiritual commitment despite experiencing difficulties, suffering, disappointments, insecurity, or other life challenges through reliance on God.

Christian: A Christian refers to an individual who professes faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and actively participates in the beliefs, teachings, worship, and practices of the Christian faith.

Church: A church refers to an organized Christian congregation where believers gather regularly for worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, thanksgiving, evangelism, and other spiritual activities.

Selected Churches: Selected churches refer to the specific Christian congregations in Benue State that will be purposively chosen to participate in this study.
