INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies shaping education, economy, and society globally. AI refers to the ability of machines and systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. The integration of AI into educational systems has significantly changed how students learn, access information, and perform academically (UNESCO, 2021).
Artificial intelligence literacy, therefore, refers to the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to understand, use, and critically engage with AI-powered tools and systems. This includes the ability to use AI-based learning platforms, educational chatbots, automated writing assistants, recommendation systems, and data-driven learning applications. According to Long and Magerko (2020), AI literacy also involves understanding how AI works, its limitations, ethical implications, and its role in decision-making processes.
Globally, universities are increasingly adopting AI technologies to improve teaching and learning outcomes. In developed countries, AI-powered systems are used for personalized learning, automated grading, academic advising, and predictive analysis of student performance. Studies have shown that students who are exposed to AI-supported learning environments tend to perform better academically due to improved access to personalized educational resources and real-time feedback (Zawacki-Richter et al., 2019).
In developing countries such as Nigeria, the adoption of AI in education is still at an emerging stage. However, the rapid expansion of digital technologies and internet access has created opportunities for students to engage with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, and other intelligent learning systems. These tools are increasingly influencing how undergraduate students complete assignments, conduct research, and prepare for examinations.
The academic performance of undergraduate students is influenced by several factors, including teaching quality, learning environment, motivation, study habits, and access to learning resources. In recent times, AI literacy has become an additional factor influencing academic outcomes. Students who are more proficient in using AI tools are better able to access information, improve writing quality, and enhance their understanding of complex academic concepts (Luckin et al., 2016).
In Nigerian universities, the education system is undergoing gradual digital transformation. Many institutions are incorporating ICT-based learning platforms, online libraries, and blended learning systems. However, the level of AI literacy among students remains uneven. While some students actively use AI tools to support their academic work, others lack the skills to effectively utilize these technologies.
The emergence of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT has further intensified discussions around academic performance and integrity. While these tools can enhance learning, they also raise concerns about overdependence, plagiarism, and reduced critical thinking if not properly guided. According to Holmes et al. (2022), AI in education has both positive and negative implications depending on how it is used by learners.
In Nigerian universities, challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited AI awareness, and lack of institutional policies on AI usage affect how students engage with these technologies. Despite these challenges, AI tools are increasingly becoming part of students’ academic lives, making it important to examine how AI literacy influences their academic performance.
Therefore, this study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence literacy on academic performance among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, with a focus on understanding how AI competencies shape learning outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem (Expanded)
Despite the increasing adoption of digital technologies in Nigerian higher education, many undergraduate students continue to experience challenges in achieving optimal academic performance. Poor academic outcomes, difficulty in understanding complex concepts, and inadequate research skills remain common issues in many universities across Nigeria.
One emerging factor that may influence academic performance is artificial intelligence literacy. While AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and other educational applications are widely available, many students lack the skills to effectively use them for academic purposes. Instead of leveraging these tools for learning enhancement, some students either ignore them or misuse them, leading to poor academic outcomes or ethical concerns.
Another major problem is the lack of structured AI integration within Nigerian university curricula. Most institutions have not yet fully incorporated AI education or digital intelligence training into their academic programmes. As a result, students acquire AI-related skills informally, leading to inconsistencies in usage and understanding.
Furthermore, there is growing concern among educators that over-reliance on AI tools may negatively affect students’ critical thinking and independent learning abilities. While AI can enhance academic productivity, improper use may lead to dependency, reduced originality, and academic dishonesty. This creates uncertainty about its actual impact on academic performance.
In addition, disparities in access to digital infrastructure across Nigerian universities further complicate the issue. Students in well-equipped institutions may have better access to AI tools and internet connectivity compared to those in underfunded institutions. This inequality may contribute to differences in academic performance.
Despite the increasing relevance of AI in education, there is limited empirical research in Nigeria examining the relationship between AI literacy and academic performance among undergraduate students. Most existing studies focus on general ICT usage rather than specific AI competencies.
Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether artificial intelligence literacy has a significant impact on the academic performance of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of artificial intelligence literacy on academic performance of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
The specific objectives are to:
- Assess the level of artificial intelligence literacy among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
- Determine the academic performance level of undergraduate students.
- Examine the influence of artificial intelligence literacy on academic performance.
- Identify challenges faced by students in using AI tools for academic purposes.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic performance of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.

For students, it provides insight into how artificial intelligence literacy can enhance academic performance through improved access to learning tools, better understanding of academic content, and improved research skills.

For university administrators, the study provides evidence to guide policy development on the use of AI tools in academic environments. It emphasizes the need for institutional frameworks that regulate and support the ethical use of AI in learning.
For policymakers and government agencies, the findings will assist in developing national education policies that incorporate artificial intelligence into higher education curricula. This will help improve the quality of graduates and enhance national development.
For researchers, the study contributes to existing literature on artificial intelligence in education, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria where AI adoption is still emerging.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on undergraduate students in selected Nigerian universities. It examines artificial intelligence literacy, academic performance, the influence of AI literacy on performance, and challenges associated with AI usage in academic settings.

Artificial Intelligence Literacy: The ability to understand, use, and critically engage with AI-powered tools and systems for academic purposes.
Academic Performance: The level of achievement of students in their academic work, usually measured through grades and cumulative GPA.
Undergraduate Students: Students studying for their first degree in a university.
