Project – Social Media Marketing Skills and Business Growth among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study (Expanded)
In the contemporary business environment, social media has become a dominant force reshaping how organizations communicate, market, and grow. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and WhatsApp have evolved from simple communication tools into powerful marketing channels that influence consumer behaviour and business performance. According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media refers to internet-based applications that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content, enabling interactive communication between businesses and customers.
Social media marketing skills refer to the competencies required to effectively use social media platforms for marketing purposes. These skills include content creation, audience targeting, digital advertising, analytics interpretation, brand storytelling, engagement strategies, and campaign optimization. In the digital economy, businesses that possess strong social media marketing skills are more likely to reach wider audiences, increase customer engagement, and improve sales performance (Chaffey & Ellis-Chadwick, 2019).
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in economic development, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. SMEs contribute significantly to employment generation, poverty reduction, and economic diversification. In Lagos State, which is Nigeria’s commercial hub, SMEs dominate the business landscape across sectors such as fashion, retail, hospitality, technology, and services. Despite their importance, many SMEs struggle with growth due to limited access to capital, poor marketing strategies, and inadequate digital skills.
The rise of social media has created new opportunities for SMEs to compete with larger firms by reducing marketing costs and improving customer reach. Research shows that businesses using social media marketing effectively experience higher brand visibility, customer loyalty, and revenue growth (Tajvidi & Karami, 2021). However, the effectiveness of social media marketing depends largely on the level of skill possessed by business owners or managers.
In Nigeria, the adoption of social media marketing among SMEs has increased significantly over the past decade due to widespread smartphone usage and internet penetration. Platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp are particularly popular among SMEs in Lagos for promoting products and engaging customers. However, the level of professionalism and skill in using these platforms varies widely among entrepreneurs.
While some SME owners use social media strategically—employing analytics, targeted ads, and content scheduling—others rely on informal and inconsistent posting methods that yield limited results. This disparity suggests that social media marketing skills play a critical role in determining business growth outcomes.
Business growth in SMEs can be measured in terms of increased sales revenue, customer base expansion, market share, profitability, and sustainability. According to Davidsson et al. (2006), business growth is a multidimensional concept influenced by internal capabilities and external environmental factors. In the context of Lagos State, SMEs face a highly competitive market, making effective marketing strategies essential for survival and growth.
Despite the potential of social media marketing, many SMEs in Nigeria still face challenges such as lack of digital literacy, poor content creation skills, limited understanding of algorithms, and inadequate access to digital marketing training. These challenges reduce their ability to fully leverage social media for business expansion.
Furthermore, algorithm changes on social media platforms require continuous learning and adaptation. SMEs that lack up-to-date marketing skills often experience declining engagement and reduced visibility online. As a result, understanding the relationship between social media marketing skills and business growth has become increasingly important.
Therefore, this study investigates how social media marketing skills influence the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem (Expanded)
Despite the rapid growth of social media usage among businesses in Lagos State, many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) continue to experience slow or stagnant growth. Although social media platforms provide cost-effective marketing opportunities, not all SMEs are able to translate online presence into actual business performance improvement.
One major problem is the lack of adequate social media marketing skills among SME owners and managers. Many entrepreneurs use social media platforms without proper knowledge of marketing strategies such as audience segmentation, content planning, engagement optimization, and performance analytics. This limits their ability to attract and retain customers effectively.
Another challenge is inconsistent content creation and poor brand positioning. Many SMEs post irregularly or fail to create engaging content that resonates with their target audience. This reduces visibility and weakens brand identity in a highly competitive digital marketplace.
Additionally, some SME operators lack understanding of paid advertising tools such as Facebook Ads Manager and Instagram promotions. As a result, they miss opportunities to scale their businesses beyond organic reach.
There is also the issue of digital competition and algorithm dependency. Social media platforms frequently change their algorithms, affecting business visibility. SMEs without adequate skills struggle to adapt to these changes, leading to reduced engagement and declining sales performance.
Furthermore, while Lagos State has a high level of digital activity, there is still a gap in structured training programmes that equip SME owners with professional social media marketing skills. Many entrepreneurs learn through trial and error, which is often inefficient and ineffective.
Despite the importance of SMEs to economic development in Nigeria, there is limited empirical evidence specifically examining how social media marketing skills influence business growth in Lagos State. Most existing studies focus on general ICT adoption rather than specific marketing competencies.
Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether social media marketing skills significantly influence business growth among SMEs in Lagos State.
