INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technological innovations of the twenty-first century, significantly reshaping various sectors of society, including healthcare, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and education. Within the educational sector, AI has evolved beyond simple automation to become an intelligent instructional support system capable of personalizing learning experiences, providing immediate feedback, facilitating adaptive assessments, and enhancing student engagement. The increasing integration of AI-supported learning tools into teaching and learning has generated considerable interest among educators, researchers, policymakers, and educational institutions seeking to improve learning outcomes and prepare learners for a digitally driven world. UNESCO (2021) emphasized that AI possesses enormous potential to improve access to quality education and achieve inclusive and equitable learning when implemented responsibly and ethically.
Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools refer to intelligent digital applications that employ machine learning, natural language processing, predictive analytics, and adaptive algorithms to facilitate teaching and learning. Such tools include intelligent tutoring systems, generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, AI-powered grammar and writing assistants, adaptive learning platforms, automated assessment systems, virtual learning assistants, and speech recognition applications for language learning. These technologies are designed to provide personalized instruction, identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses, generate instant feedback, recommend learning resources, and create interactive learning experiences that enhance students’ understanding and academic engagement. Recent evidence suggests that AI-supported instructional technologies promote learner autonomy, collaborative learning, and improved academic performance when integrated effectively into classroom instruction (Zawacki-Richter et al., 2019; Holmes, Bialik & Fadel, 2019).
The increasing adoption of AI in education reflects the transition from traditional teacher-centered instruction toward learner-centered pedagogies. Conventional instructional methods often assume that all students learn at the same pace despite considerable differences in learning abilities, motivation, prior knowledge, and learning styles. AI technologies address these limitations by adapting instructional content to individual learners’ needs, thereby creating personalized learning pathways. Through adaptive feedback, intelligent recommendations, and continuous assessment, AI-supported learning tools enable students to learn at their own pace while allowing teachers to monitor learning progress more efficiently. Research indicates that personalized learning environments created by AI contribute significantly to students’ cognitive development, motivation, and sustained academic engagement (Luckin et al., 2016; Holmes et al., 2019).
Academic engagement has increasingly become one of the strongest predictors of students’ academic success. Academic engagement encompasses students’ behavioural participation, emotional involvement, and cognitive investment in learning activities. Engaged learners attend classes regularly, participate actively during instruction, complete assignments diligently, and demonstrate persistence when faced with academic challenges. Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) argued that engagement is a multidimensional construct that directly influences learning achievement through increased attention, effort, and persistence. Educational psychologists have consistently argued that engaged students are more likely to achieve higher academic outcomes than disengaged learners because engagement facilitates meaningful learning, critical thinking, and long-term knowledge retention.
The emergence of AI-supported learning tools has introduced new possibilities for improving academic engagement. AI applications encourage interactive learning by providing immediate responses to students’ questions, generating personalized exercises, supporting collaborative problem-solving, and offering continuous feedback on learning progress. Rather than depending solely on classroom instruction, students can now interact with intelligent learning systems beyond school hours, thereby extending learning opportunities. Studies have shown that AI-supported learning environments increase students’ interest in learning, improve classroom participation, strengthen self-directed learning, and enhance academic engagement across various subject areas (Luckin et al., 2016).
English Language occupies a strategic position within Nigeria’s educational system because it serves as the official language of communication, administration, commerce, and instruction. It is the language through which virtually all school subjects are taught and examined, particularly from the upper primary level onward. Proficiency in English Language therefore determines students’ success not only in language subjects but also in other academic disciplines. Senior secondary school students require strong competencies in grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, listening, and oral communication to succeed in national examinations such as those conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
Despite its importance, the teaching and learning of English Language continue to face significant challenges in Nigeria. Many students experience difficulties in reading comprehension, essay writing, vocabulary development, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy. These challenges are often associated with overcrowded classrooms, inadequate instructional materials, limited individualized instruction, insufficient feedback, and declining student motivation. Traditional teaching methods frequently provide limited opportunities for students to receive immediate corrective feedback or individualized learning support, thereby affecting both engagement and academic achievement (Ayodele & Adebayo, 2020).
AI-supported learning tools provide innovative solutions to many of these instructional challenges. Generative AI applications can assist students in improving grammar, vocabulary, writing organization, pronunciation, and reading comprehension through immediate explanations and personalized feedback. Intelligent tutoring systems can diagnose learning difficulties and recommend appropriate learning activities, while adaptive learning platforms adjust lesson difficulty according to students’ performance. Reviews of AI-based language learning consistently report improvements in language proficiency, learner engagement, and learning satisfaction when these technologies are appropriately integrated into English language instruction (Holmes et al., 2019).
Within Nigeria, awareness and use of AI technologies in education have increased rapidly following the widespread availability of generative AI platforms. However, adoption remains uneven due to infrastructural constraints, inadequate teacher training, unequal access to digital devices, concerns about academic integrity, and varying levels of digital literacy. National reviews indicate that sophisticated AI applications are still relatively uncommon across many Nigerian schools despite growing interest among educators and learners (UNESCO, 2021).
Empirical evidence from Nigeria further demonstrates increasing student awareness and engagement with AI tools. Studies conducted among secondary school students reported that learners are becoming familiar with AI technologies and increasingly employ AI chatbots and related applications to support academic learning, although utilization varies considerably across schools and regions (Olanrewaju et al., 2023).
Similarly, research conducted in selected secondary schools within Abuja found that AI-supported personalized learning positively influenced students’ academic engagement and learning outcomes, suggesting that technology-enhanced instruction can significantly improve learning effectiveness when properly implemented (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).
Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) represents one of the most educationally diverse areas within the Federal Capital Territory, comprising numerous public and private secondary schools with varying levels of technological infrastructure and digital readiness. While many schools have introduced computers, internet connectivity, digital classrooms, and online learning platforms, little empirical evidence exists regarding the extent to which AI-supported learning tools influence students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language within AMAC.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on senior secondary school students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory. The study is expected to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on AI in education while providing evidence-based recommendations for the effective integration of AI technologies into English Language teaching and learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed educational practices across the world by introducing intelligent learning tools capable of supporting personalized instruction, adaptive learning, automated feedback, and continuous assessment. AI-supported learning tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, generative AI applications, AI writing assistants, and adaptive learning platforms are increasingly being integrated into educational systems to improve students’ engagement and academic achievement. International organizations, including UNESCO, have acknowledged AI as a promising technology for improving the quality, accessibility, and inclusiveness of education when implemented responsibly. Despite these global developments, the extent to which AI-supported learning tools influence students’ learning outcomes remains uneven across countries and educational contexts.
In Nigeria, the integration of AI into secondary education is still at an emerging stage. Although internet access, smartphones, and digital learning platforms have become increasingly available, many secondary schools have not fully integrated AI-supported instructional technologies into classroom teaching. Where such technologies exist, their utilization is often limited by inadequate technological infrastructure, unstable electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, insufficient digital literacy among teachers and students, inadequate institutional policies, and concerns regarding the ethical use of generative AI. These challenges have created disparities in students’ opportunities to benefit from AI-enhanced learning experiences.
The teaching and learning of English Language continue to present serious academic challenges in Nigerian secondary schools. Reports from national examination bodies have consistently shown that many students experience difficulties in grammar, essay writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and oral communication, resulting in unsatisfactory performance in English Language examinations. Since English Language serves as the medium of instruction for virtually all school subjects, poor achievement in the subject has wider implications for students’ overall academic success and future educational opportunities.
Academic engagement has also become an increasing concern among educators. Many senior secondary school students demonstrate low classroom participation, reduced motivation, limited interest in independent learning, poor completion of assignments, and declining commitment to academic activities. These behavioural and cognitive challenges reduce learning effectiveness and ultimately affect academic achievement. Although AI-supported learning tools have the potential to increase learner engagement by providing personalized feedback, interactive learning experiences, and self-paced instruction, there is limited empirical evidence regarding their effectiveness within Nigerian secondary schools.
In Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), schools differ considerably in terms of technological readiness, availability of digital facilities, teacher competence in educational technology, and students’ access to AI-supported learning resources. While some students actively utilize AI-powered applications such as ChatGPT, AI grammar checkers, and adaptive learning platforms to support their studies, many others have limited or no access to such technologies. Consequently, the actual influence of these AI-supported learning tools on students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language remains largely unknown.
Furthermore, a review of existing literature indicates that many previous studies have focused broadly on educational technology, e-learning, computer-assisted instruction, or ICT integration. Comparatively few studies have specifically examined AI-supported learning tools as a distinct instructional innovation, particularly within the context of English Language learning among senior secondary school students in AMAC, FCT. This represents a contextual and empirical gap in the literature.
It is this gap that necessitates the present study. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on senior secondary school students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language in Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT, with a view to providing empirical evidence that will inform educational policy, instructional practice, and future research.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on senior secondary school students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), FCT.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- examine the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on students’ academic engagement in English Language in AMAC, FCT;
- determine the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on students’ academic achievement in English Language;
- assess the influence of AI-supported personalized learning on students’ academic engagement in English Language;
- examine the influence of AI-generated feedback on students’ academic achievement in English Language; and
- determine the influence of AI-supported learning tools on students’ motivation towards learning English Language.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What is the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on students’ academic engagement in English Language in AMAC, FCT?
- What is the influence of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools on students’ academic achievement in English Language?
- How does AI-supported personalized learning influence students’ academic engagement in English Language?
- What is the influence of AI-generated feedback on students’ academic achievement in English Language?
- How do Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools influence students’ motivation towards learning English Language?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools and senior secondary school students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language in Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT.
1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study
This study focuses on the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-supported learning tools on senior secondary school students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The study specifically examines how the use of AI-supported learning tools influences students’ academic engagement and achievement in English Language.
The study is delimited to five major variables. The independent variable is Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools, operationalized through the use of AI learning applications, AI-supported personalized learning, AI-generated feedback, adaptive learning systems, and intelligent learning assistants. The dependent variables are students’ academic engagement and academic achievement in English Language, measured in terms of behavioural participation, cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, motivation towards learning, and perceived academic performance in English Language.
Geographically, the study is limited to selected public senior secondary schools within Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. AMAC was selected because it comprises a large concentration of public secondary schools with varying levels of technological infrastructure and increasing exposure to digital learning technologies, making it suitable for investigating the integration of AI-supported learning tools.
The study is further delimited to Senior Secondary School (SSS I, SSS II, and SSS III) students because they possess sufficient academic maturity, digital literacy, and experience with English Language learning to provide reliable responses regarding the use of AI-supported learning technologies. Teachers, junior secondary school students, and private secondary schools are excluded from the study.
Finally, the study adopts a descriptive survey research design using structured questionnaires to collect data from the respondents. The findings are therefore limited to the opinions and experiences of the sampled students within the selected public senior secondary schools in AMAC and may not necessarily be generalized to all secondary schools in Nigeria.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are expected to contribute significantly to educational research, policy formulation, and instructional practice regarding the integration of Artificial Intelligence-supported learning tools into secondary education in Nigeria.
The study will be beneficial to students by providing evidence on how AI-supported learning tools can enhance academic engagement, improve independent learning, strengthen critical thinking, and increase achievement in English Language. The findings may encourage students to utilize AI technologies responsibly as complementary learning resources rather than as substitutes for genuine learning.
The study will also benefit English Language teachers by providing insights into how AI-supported instructional technologies can be integrated into classroom teaching to improve lesson delivery, provide personalized feedback, identify students’ learning difficulties, and increase classroom engagement. The findings may also encourage teachers to adopt innovative instructional approaches that complement traditional teaching methods.
For school administrators, the findings will provide empirical evidence on the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, internet connectivity, educational technologies, and teacher capacity development. The study may assist school leaders in developing institutional policies that promote the ethical and effective use of AI technologies in teaching and learning.
The study will further benefit the Federal Capital Territory Education Secretariat, the Federal Ministry of Education, curriculum planners, and other educational policymakers by providing evidence that can inform policies on digital education, artificial intelligence integration, curriculum innovation, and teacher professional development. The findings may also support national efforts aimed at promoting digital transformation and improving learning outcomes in secondary education.
Parents and guardians will equally benefit from the study by gaining a better understanding of the educational opportunities and challenges associated with AI-supported learning tools. The findings may encourage parents to provide appropriate supervision and support for students’ responsible use of AI technologies outside the classroom.
The study will also contribute to the existing body of knowledge by filling the empirical gap on AI-supported learning tools within the context of English Language learning among senior secondary school students in Abuja Municipal Area Council. It is expected to serve as a useful reference material for future researchers interested in artificial intelligence, educational technology, English language education, digital pedagogy, and student academic engagement.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
For the purpose of this study, the following terms are operationally defined:
Artificial Intelligence (AI): The simulation of human intelligence by computer systems capable of performing tasks such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, language processing, and decision-making.
Artificial Intelligence-Supported Learning Tools: Intelligent digital applications and platforms that utilize AI technologies, including machine learning and natural language processing, to facilitate personalized learning, automated feedback, adaptive instruction, and academic support for students.
Academic Engagement: The extent to which students actively participate in learning activities through behavioural, emotional, and cognitive involvement in English Language learning.
Academic Achievement: The level of learning attained by students in English Language, reflected in their classroom performance, continuous assessment, examinations, and overall academic outcomes.
English Language: The official language of instruction in Nigerian schools and the subject through which students develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary.
AI-Supported Personalized Learning: An instructional approach in which AI technologies adapt learning content, pace, and feedback to meet the individual learning needs and abilities of students.
AI-Generated Feedback: Immediate and automated responses provided by AI-supported learning systems to guide students in correcting errors, improving understanding, and enhancing learning performance.
Senior Secondary School Students: Students enrolled in Senior Secondary School One (SSS I), Senior Secondary School Two (SSS II), and Senior Secondary School Three (SSS III) in public secondary schools within Abuja Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC): One of the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, comprising numerous public and private educational institutions and serving as the geographical area for this study.
