INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed virtually every sector of society, including education. Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, language understanding, and decision-making (Russell & Norvig, 2021). Recent developments in generative AI technologies, including large language models such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude, have significantly altered how students access information, complete academic tasks, and engage in learning. These technologies provide instant responses, generate essays, summarize academic materials, solve mathematical problems, and assist with coding, thereby offering unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning while simultaneously raising concerns regarding academic integrity (UNESCO, 2023).
Artificial intelligence literacy has consequently emerged as a critical competency for learners in the digital age. AI literacy extends beyond the technical ability to use AI applications; it encompasses understanding how AI systems function, recognising their capabilities and limitations, evaluating AI-generated content critically, using AI responsibly, and appreciating the ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI technologies (Long & Magerko, 2020). Ng et al. (2021) conceptualised AI literacy as a multidimensional competence involving AI knowledge, critical thinking, ethical awareness, human-centred perspectives, and practical application skills. As AI technologies become deeply integrated into educational environments, universities increasingly expect students to develop sufficient AI literacy to maximise learning benefits while avoiding misuse.
Higher education institutions worldwide are rapidly incorporating AI-enabled educational technologies into teaching, learning, research, assessment, and student support services. AI-powered adaptive learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems, automated grading, virtual assistants, plagiarism detection software, and academic writing assistants are becoming increasingly common (Holmes et al., 2022). While these innovations enhance educational efficiency and accessibility, they simultaneously create new ethical dilemmas concerning authorship, originality, transparency, accountability, and fairness in academic work.
The emergence of generative AI has fundamentally altered traditional understandings of academic integrity. Academic integrity refers to the commitment to honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage in all academic activities (International Center for Academic Integrity [ICAI], 2021). It involves producing original work, acknowledging intellectual contributions appropriately, avoiding plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, falsification, contract cheating, and other forms of academic misconduct. Universities have traditionally relied on policies, honour codes, and plagiarism detection software to uphold academic integrity. However, AI-generated content presents new challenges because AI-produced texts often evade conventional plagiarism detection systems while creating uncertainty regarding authorship and intellectual ownership (Perkins, 2023).
The increasing accessibility of AI applications has generated significant debate among educators regarding their appropriate use in academic settings. While AI tools can support brainstorming, language improvement, data analysis, coding assistance, and personalised learning, they may also encourage excessive dependence, reduce independent critical thinking, and facilitate dishonest academic practices when used inappropriately (Kasneci et al., 2023). Consequently, universities across the globe are revising academic integrity policies to address acceptable and unacceptable uses of generative AI in coursework, examinations, and research.
Artificial intelligence literacy has been proposed as an important protective factor against unethical AI use. Students who understand AI’s strengths, weaknesses, ethical implications, and limitations are more likely to employ these technologies responsibly rather than as shortcuts for completing academic work (Long & Magerko, 2020). AI-literate students are better equipped to evaluate AI-generated outputs critically, verify factual accuracy, identify biases, and appropriately acknowledge AI assistance where institutional policies require disclosure.
In the Nigerian context, universities are experiencing rapid digital transformation driven by increased internet accessibility, smartphone penetration, online learning platforms, and widespread adoption of digital technologies. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian higher education institutions accelerated digital learning initiatives, exposing students to various AI-enabled educational technologies (Federal Ministry of Education, 2022). Generative AI tools have become increasingly available to undergraduate students, many of whom utilise these technologies for assignments, research, presentations, programming tasks, and examination preparation. However, institutional policies governing AI use remain inconsistent across universities, leaving many students uncertain about acceptable practices.
Studies indicate that Nigerian university students possess varying levels of digital literacy, technological competence, and ethical awareness regarding emerging technologies (Atoy et al., 2020). Although digital literacy facilitates effective technology use, it does not necessarily translate into AI literacy, which requires understanding algorithmic decision-making, machine learning processes, ethical risks, data privacy concerns, and responsible AI usage (Ng et al., 2021). Consequently, students may utilise AI tools extensively without fully appreciating their ethical implications for academic honesty.
Academic integrity challenges have long existed within Nigerian higher education. Incidences of plagiarism, examination malpractice, impersonation, fabrication of research findings, contract cheating, and unethical academic practices continue to threaten educational quality and institutional credibility (Omonijo et al., 2013). The introduction of sophisticated generative AI technologies has added new dimensions to these longstanding concerns. Unlike traditional plagiarism, AI-generated assignments may appear original while concealing substantial dependence on automated systems, thereby complicating institutional efforts to detect misconduct.
Digital ethics provides an important theoretical and practical framework for understanding responsible AI use among students. Digital ethics refers to the principles, values, and standards governing responsible behaviour in digital environments, including issues relating to privacy, intellectual property, transparency, accountability, fairness, digital citizenship, and responsible technology use (Floridi & Cowls, 2019). Digital ethics encourages individuals to make morally responsible decisions when interacting with digital technologies, ensuring that technological innovation aligns with human values and societal well-being.
Within educational settings, digital ethics encompasses responsible online behaviour, respect for intellectual property rights, truthful representation of authorship, ethical information sharing, and appropriate use of digital resources (Ribble, 2021). Students possessing strong digital ethical values are expected to exercise greater restraint in using AI technologies for academic purposes, even when opportunities for misuse exist. Ethical awareness may therefore influence how AI literacy translates into actual academic behaviour.
The mediating role of digital ethics is particularly important because technological competence alone does not guarantee ethical conduct. A student may possess high AI literacy yet still engage in dishonest practices if ethical values are weak. Conversely, students with strong digital ethics may utilise AI responsibly despite moderate AI literacy. Thus, digital ethics may explain the mechanism through which AI literacy influences academic integrity among undergraduate students.
Several theoretical perspectives support this relationship. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (1986) suggests that behaviour results from reciprocal interactions among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavioural expectations. AI literacy represents a cognitive capability, digital ethics reflects internalised moral standards, while academic integrity constitutes behavioural outcomes. Likewise, Rest’s Four-Component Model of Moral Behaviour (1986) emphasises that moral action requires ethical sensitivity, moral judgment, motivation, and character, all of which may shape students’ decisions regarding AI use.
Globally, empirical evidence concerning AI literacy and academic integrity remains relatively limited because generative AI technologies are still evolving rapidly. Existing studies have primarily examined perceptions of AI use, academic dishonesty, or technology acceptance separately, with fewer investigations integrating AI literacy, digital ethics, and academic integrity within a unified framework (Kasneci et al., 2023; Perkins, 2023). Even fewer studies have focused specifically on undergraduate students in developing countries such as Nigeria, where digital infrastructure, educational policies, and technological adoption differ substantially from developed contexts.
Understanding the relationship between AI literacy, digital ethics, and academic integrity is therefore essential for Nigerian universities seeking to develop effective institutional policies, ethical guidelines, AI literacy programmes, and responsible technology integration strategies. Such knowledge can assist educators in promoting ethical AI adoption while preserving the integrity, credibility, and quality of higher education.
Therefore, this study investigates artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, with particular emphasis on the mediating role of digital ethics.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence technologies has fundamentally changed how undergraduate students engage with learning, academic writing, research, and assessment. AI-powered tools now enable students to generate essays, summarise scholarly articles, solve complex problems, translate texts, analyse data, and produce programming codes within seconds. Although these technologies offer significant educational benefits, they have simultaneously introduced unprecedented challenges to academic integrity. Universities worldwide increasingly express concern over students’ reliance on AI-generated content without proper disclosure, raising questions regarding originality, authorship, transparency, and ethical responsibility (UNESCO, 2023).
In Nigerian universities, AI applications are becoming increasingly popular among undergraduate students because of improved internet accessibility, affordable smartphones, and free access to several generative AI platforms. Despite this growing adoption, many institutions have yet to develop comprehensive policies governing acceptable AI use in academic work. Consequently, students often receive inconsistent guidance regarding when AI assistance constitutes legitimate academic support and when it becomes academic misconduct. This policy gap creates uncertainty that may encourage unethical practices while making institutional enforcement of academic integrity more difficult.
Furthermore, although students increasingly demonstrate digital competence, possessing digital skills does not necessarily imply adequate artificial intelligence literacy. Many undergraduate students can effectively operate AI applications without understanding how these systems generate information, their inherent limitations, potential biases, ethical implications, or risks of misinformation. Such limited AI literacy may contribute to inappropriate dependence on AI-generated outputs, reduced critical thinking, superficial learning, and compromised academic honesty. Existing educational interventions in many Nigerian universities continue to focus primarily on conventional digital literacy while paying relatively little attention to AI-specific competencies required for responsible technology use.
Another important concern relates to students’ ethical orientation within digital environments. While some students may possess sufficient AI knowledge, they may still misuse AI technologies because ethical values regarding intellectual honesty, transparency, accountability, and respect for authorship are weak. Conversely, students with strong digital ethical values may utilise AI responsibly even when their AI literacy is still developing. This suggests that digital ethics may constitute an important explanatory mechanism linking AI literacy with academic integrity. However, this mediating role has received limited empirical attention, particularly within Nigerian higher education.
Existing empirical studies have predominantly investigated academic integrity, digital literacy, technology acceptance, or AI adoption independently. Comparatively few studies have simultaneously examined AI literacy, digital ethics, and academic integrity within an integrated conceptual framework. Moreover, available international findings cannot automatically be generalised to Nigerian universities because of differences in educational systems, technological infrastructure, institutional policies, cultural values, and patterns of AI adoption.
The paucity of empirical evidence concerning how digital ethics mediates the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity represents a significant knowledge gap. Without such evidence, university administrators, policymakers, educators, and curriculum developers may find it difficult to design effective AI literacy programmes, ethical guidelines, and institutional policies that encourage responsible AI use while preserving academic standards.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, with particular emphasis on examining the mediating role of digital ethics.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, with digital ethics serving as a mediating variable.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- examine the influence of artificial intelligence literacy on academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
- determine the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and digital ethics among undergraduate students.

- determine whether digital ethics significantly mediates the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will answer the following research questions:
- What is the influence of artificial intelligence literacy on academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities?
- What relationship exists between artificial intelligence literacy and digital ethics among undergraduate students?
- To what extent does digital ethics influence academic integrity among undergraduate students?
- Does digital ethics mediate the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: Digital ethics does not significantly mediate the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to university administrators, lecturers, curriculum developers, policymakers, undergraduate students, educational technology developers, and future researchers.
The study will assist university administrators in developing comprehensive institutional policies regulating the ethical use of artificial intelligence in teaching, learning, and assessment.
Lecturers will benefit by gaining deeper understanding of how AI literacy and digital ethics influence students’ academic behaviour, enabling them to integrate responsible AI use into instructional practices.
Curriculum developers will find the study valuable in incorporating AI literacy and digital ethics into university curricula to prepare students for responsible participation in an AI-driven society.
Educational policymakers will benefit from empirical evidence supporting the formulation of national guidelines for ethical AI adoption within higher education institutions.
Undergraduate students will become more aware of the ethical implications of AI technologies and the importance of maintaining academic integrity while benefiting from AI-assisted learning.
The study will also contribute to existing literature by extending knowledge regarding AI literacy, digital ethics, and academic integrity within Nigerian higher education, thereby providing a foundation for future studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on artificial intelligence literacy and academic integrity among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, with digital ethics as the mediating variable.
The independent variable is artificial intelligence literacy, the dependent variable is academic integrity, while digital ethics serves as the mediating variable.
The study will involve undergraduate students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Artificial Intelligence Literacy: The knowledge, competencies, critical thinking abilities, and ethical understanding that enable undergraduate students to use AI technologies responsibly and effectively for academic purposes.
Academic Integrity: The commitment of undergraduate students to honesty, originality, responsibility, fairness, and ethical conduct in learning, research, examinations, and academic writing.
Digital Ethics: The moral principles and standards that guide responsible behaviour in digital environments, including ethical use of artificial intelligence, respect for intellectual property, accountability, transparency, and responsible digital citizenship.
Undergraduate Students: Individuals enrolled in bachelor’s degree programmes in recognised Nigerian universities.
