INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education remains one of the most important instruments for individual empowerment, social development, economic advancement, and national transformation. In contemporary societies, the effectiveness of educational systems increasingly depends on their ability to adapt to technological changes and provide learners with opportunities to acquire knowledge through innovative approaches. The rapid advancement of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has significantly transformed educational practices globally, creating new possibilities for teaching, learning, assessment, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Digital technologies have shifted education beyond the traditional classroom environment by enabling learners to access educational resources through online platforms, mobile devices, and internet-based applications (UNESCO, 2019).
Digital learning platforms have emerged as important tools in modern education because they provide structured electronic environments where teachers and students can interact, share learning materials, complete assignments, communicate, and participate in learning activities beyond physical classrooms. These platforms include Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Google Classroom, Moodle, Canvas, Microsoft Teams, and other digital educational applications designed to support teaching and learning processes. Digital learning platforms provide opportunities for personalised learning, flexible access to educational content, collaborative learning experiences, and continuous interaction between teachers and learners (Martin & Tapp, 2019).
The adoption of digital learning platforms reflects a broader transformation from traditional teacher-centred approaches toward technology-supported learner-centred education. Unlike conventional classroom models where learning is often restricted to fixed locations and schedules, digital learning environments allow students to access educational materials at their convenience and engage with learning activities according to their individual needs. According to Bates (2019), technology-enhanced learning can improve educational accessibility, increase learner autonomy, and support innovative teaching practices when effectively integrated into educational systems.
One of the important outcomes associated with digital learning platforms is students’ academic engagement. Academic engagement refers to the degree of students’ involvement, commitment, interest, participation, and psychological investment in learning activities. Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) explain that student engagement consists of behavioural, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. Behavioural engagement involves students’ participation and effort in academic tasks, emotional engagement relates to students’ interest and sense of belonging, while cognitive engagement reflects students’ willingness to invest mental effort in learning.
Student academic engagement is widely recognised as a significant predictor of educational success because engaged learners are more likely to demonstrate motivation, persistence, improved academic achievement, and positive learning behaviours. However, maintaining high levels of student engagement remains a major challenge in many educational systems due to factors such as traditional teaching methods, limited instructional resources, declining learner motivation, and inadequate interaction between teachers and students. Digital learning platforms have therefore attracted attention as potential solutions for improving student engagement by creating interactive and collaborative learning environments.
Globally, digital learning platforms have become increasingly integrated into education systems, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted conventional schooling worldwide. The closure of schools during the pandemic forced educational institutions to adopt online and blended learning approaches to ensure continuity of education. The experience demonstrated the importance of digital technologies in supporting educational resilience and maintaining learning activities during periods of disruption (World Bank, 2021). Although many institutions faced challenges during this transition, the pandemic accelerated awareness of the potential role of digital learning platforms in improving educational delivery.
In developing countries, including Nigeria, the adoption of digital learning platforms has gained increasing attention as part of efforts to improve educational quality, expand access, and enhance teaching effectiveness. Nigeria’s education sector has recognised ICT integration as a key strategy for improving learning outcomes and preparing students for participation in a technology-driven society. The National Policy on Education emphasises the importance of integrating ICT into educational processes to improve teaching and learning effectiveness (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013).
Despite the recognised benefits of digital learning platforms, their implementation within Nigerian secondary schools remains relatively limited compared with developed educational systems. Public secondary schools in Nigeria continue to experience challenges related to inadequate ICT infrastructure, insufficient internet connectivity, limited access to digital devices, high costs of technology adoption, and inadequate teacher training. These challenges affect the ability of schools to effectively utilise digital platforms for improving students’ learning experiences.
The situation is particularly important in Lagos State, Nigeria’s most economically developed and technologically advanced state. Lagos has witnessed significant growth in digital innovation, internet connectivity, and technology-based educational initiatives. However, despite these advantages, public secondary schools in Lagos State still face variations in digital readiness, resource availability, and capacity for effective technology integration. Studies have shown that while digital learning tools provide opportunities for improving educational outcomes, successful implementation depends on infrastructure, teacher competence, student preparedness, and institutional support.
Digital learning platforms can enhance academic engagement through several mechanisms. First, they provide students with immediate access to learning materials, allowing them to review lessons, access additional resources, and learn beyond classroom hours. Second, digital platforms encourage interactive learning through discussion forums, online quizzes, multimedia content, and collaborative activities. Third, they allow teachers to provide timely feedback and monitor students’ progress more effectively. These features can improve students’ motivation and participation in academic activities (Almaiah, Al-Khasawneh, & Althunibat, 2020).
Furthermore, digital learning platforms support personalised learning by allowing students to learn at their own pace. Students who require additional explanations can revisit learning materials, while advanced learners can explore supplementary resources. This flexibility may increase students’ confidence, independence, and interest in learning. However, the effectiveness of digital learning platforms in improving student engagement depends on how they are implemented and utilised. Technology alone does not automatically improve learning outcomes. Poorly designed platforms, inadequate teacher preparation, limited digital skills among students, and unreliable technological infrastructure may reduce the potential benefits of digital learning. Therefore, understanding how digital learning platforms influence academic engagement requires examination of the actual experiences of students within specific educational contexts.
In Nigeria, public secondary schools represent a critical stage of education because they prepare students for higher education, employment, and active participation in society. Improving students’ academic engagement at this level is essential for enhancing learning outcomes and reducing educational challenges such as poor performance, absenteeism, and dropout rates. While many discussions emphasise the potential advantages of digital education, limited empirical evidence exists regarding how these platforms influence students’ behavioural participation, emotional involvement, and cognitive commitment to learning activities within Nigerian public secondary schools.
The issue is further complicated by inequalities in access to digital resources. Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may experience difficulties accessing smartphones, computers, electricity, and affordable internet services. Such inequalities may create differences in students’ ability to benefit from digital learning platforms and may limit the extent to which technology contributes to educational improvement.
Teachers’ digital competence also represents an important factor influencing the success of digital learning initiatives. Effective use of digital platforms requires teachers who possess the necessary technological knowledge and pedagogical skills to integrate digital tools into classroom instruction. Without adequate training and support, teachers may use digital platforms merely as repositories for materials rather than interactive learning environments.
Therefore, examining digital learning platforms and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Lagos State is necessary to understand whether technology adoption is producing meaningful educational benefits. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between digital learning platforms and students’ academic engagement in selected public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study will examine how digital learning accessibility, platform usage, interactive features, and digital learning experiences influence students’ participation, motivation, and involvement in academic activities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed educational systems globally, creating new opportunities for improving teaching effectiveness, learning accessibility, and student engagement. Digital learning platforms have increasingly become recognised as important tools for supporting modern education because they provide opportunities for interactive learning, flexible access to educational materials, communication between teachers and students, and personalised learning experiences. However, despite the growing recognition of these benefits, the effective integration of digital learning platforms into public secondary schools in Nigeria remains a significant challenge.
Students’ academic engagement continues to be a major concern within the Nigerian secondary education system. Academic engagement influences students’ motivation, participation, commitment, learning outcomes, and overall academic success. However, many public secondary schools continue to experience challenges such as declining student motivation, passive learning behaviours, limited classroom interaction, poor participation in academic activities, and inadequate access to learning resources. These challenges have created concerns regarding the effectiveness of traditional teaching approaches and the need for innovative methods that can enhance students’ involvement in learning processes.
Although digital learning platforms have been promoted as possible solutions for improving educational engagement, the extent to which they contribute to improved academic participation among Nigerian secondary school students remains uncertain. While digital platforms offer features such as online discussions, multimedia learning materials, interactive assessments, and immediate feedback mechanisms, their actual impact depends on how effectively they are adopted and utilised by students and teachers.
One major problem is the gap between the availability of digital learning technologies and their effective implementation within public secondary schools. Many schools may have access to some forms of digital resources; however, inadequate infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, limited availability of digital devices, and insufficient technical support continue to restrict effective utilisation. As a result, the potential benefits of digital learning platforms may not be fully realised among students.

Therefore, examining digital learning platforms within selected public secondary schools in Lagos State provides an important opportunity to assess their practical influence on student engagement.
Another concern is that many discussions surrounding digital learning platforms in Nigeria focus mainly on access, adoption, or technological availability rather than their actual influence on students’ learning experiences. The mere introduction of digital tools does not automatically guarantee improved engagement or academic outcomes. Without empirical investigation, it remains unclear whether students actively utilise these platforms, whether they find them motivating, and whether they contribute meaningfully to their academic involvement.
Additionally, concerns exist regarding the sustainability of digital learning initiatives in Nigerian public schools. Some technology-based educational projects are introduced through short-term interventions but face difficulties due to inadequate maintenance, limited funding, lack of continuous teacher training, and absence of long-term implementation strategies. Sustainable adoption requires not only technological resources but also supportive policies, institutional commitment, and continuous capacity development.
There is also a research gap concerning context-specific evidence on digital learning platforms and student engagement in Nigerian public secondary schools. Although several studies have examined e-learning and technology integration in higher education institutions, fewer studies have focused specifically on public secondary schools, particularly within Lagos State. Secondary school students have unique learning needs, technological experiences, and educational challenges that require separate investigation.
Furthermore, existing literature has not sufficiently addressed how students perceive digital learning platforms and whether these perceptions influence their willingness to engage with technology-supported learning environments. Students’ attitudes, confidence, motivation, and satisfaction are important factors determining whether digital learning platforms become effective educational tools or remain underutilised resources.
The absence of adequate empirical evidence creates difficulties for education policymakers, school administrators, and teachers seeking to make informed decisions regarding digital learning investments. Without understanding the relationship between digital learning platforms and academic engagement, efforts to promote technology integration in Nigerian public secondary schools may fail to achieve their intended objectives.
Therefore, this study seeks to address these gaps by examining digital learning platforms and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria, using selected schools in Lagos State as a case study. The study will investigate the extent of digital learning platform usage, determine its influence on students’ behavioural, emotional, and cognitive engagement, and identify challenges affecting effective implementation of digital learning platforms in public secondary schools.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of digital learning platforms on students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria, using selected schools in Lagos State as a case study.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:
- examine the extent of digital learning platform adoption in selected public secondary schools in Lagos State;
- determine the influence of digital learning platforms on students’ behavioural engagement in academic activities;
- assess the effect of digital learning platforms on students’ emotional and cognitive engagement with learning; and
- identify the challenges affecting effective utilisation of digital learning platforms in public secondary schools.
1.5 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the following research questions:
- What is the extent of digital learning platform adoption in selected public secondary schools in Lagos State?
- How do digital learning platforms influence students’ behavioural engagement in academic activities?
- To what extent do digital learning platforms affect students’ emotional and cognitive engagement with learning?
- What challenges affect the effective utilisation of digital learning platforms in public secondary schools?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following null hypothesis:
H₀: Digital learning platforms have no significant influence on students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
1.7 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it examines the relationship between digital learning platforms and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria, with particular focus on selected schools in Lagos State. 1.8 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on digital learning platforms and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria, using selected schools in Lagos State as a case study.
Geographically, the study is limited to selected public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Lagos State was selected because it represents one of Nigeria’s most technologically advanced educational environments, with increasing adoption of digital technologies in schools. However, public secondary schools within the state continue to experience challenges relating to ICT infrastructure, digital accessibility, and technology integration.
Conceptually, the study examines digital learning platforms as the independent variable and students’ academic engagement as the dependent variable.
Digital learning platforms will be examined through the following dimensions:
- availability and accessibility of digital learning platforms;
- frequency of platform usage by students and teachers;
- interaction and communication features;
- availability of digital learning materials; and
- students’ experiences with technology-supported learning.
Students’ academic engagement will be examined through the following indicators:
- behavioural engagement, including participation in academic activities, completion of assignments, and classroom involvement;
- emotional engagement, including interest, motivation, satisfaction, and enthusiasm toward learning; and
- cognitive engagement, including concentration, independent learning, problem-solving, and commitment to academic tasks.
The study population comprises students in selected public secondary schools in Lagos State who have experience with or exposure to digital learning platforms.
The study focuses specifically on digital learning platforms used for educational purposes and does not cover general social media platforms, entertainment applications, or non-educational digital technologies. It also does not examine all factors influencing academic achievement but concentrates specifically on students’ academic engagement.
The study is limited to selected public secondary schools and does not include private secondary schools, tertiary institutions, or informal learning environments. Therefore, findings should be interpreted within the context of public secondary education in Lagos State.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Digital Learning Platforms
Digital learning platforms refer to technology-based online environments that support teaching and learning activities by enabling access to educational materials, communication, collaboration, assessment, and knowledge sharing between teachers and students.
Academic Engagement
Academic engagement refers to the extent to which students participate in, are motivated by, and commit themselves to learning activities. It includes behavioural, emotional, and cognitive involvement in education.
Students
Students refer to learners enrolled in public secondary schools who participate in educational activities and interact with learning resources, including digital learning platforms.
Digital Learning
Digital learning refers to the use of electronic technologies, internet-based resources, and digital tools to support teaching, learning, assessment, and educational interaction.
Learning Management System (LMS)
A Learning Management System refers to a software application designed to manage, deliver, monitor, and support educational content and learning activities electronically.
