INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The relationship between faith and works has remained one of the most significant theological discussions within Christian thought throughout the history of the church. At the centre of this debate is the question of how genuine faith in God is demonstrated and whether human actions contribute to salvation or serve as evidence of an already existing faith. The Epistle of James occupies a unique position in the New Testament because of its strong emphasis on practical Christian living and its insistence that authentic faith must be expressed through righteous actions. James’ declaration that “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17) has generated extensive theological reflection because it appears, at first glance, to contrast with Paul’s teaching that believers are justified by faith apart from works of the law (Romans 3:28).

The Epistle of James is traditionally attributed to James, the brother of Jesus and a prominent leader of the Jerusalem church. Early Christian tradition identifies him as a respected figure within the Jewish-Christian community who played a significant role in the development of the early church (Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 20.9.1). Scholars generally date the letter between the late first century and the early decades of Christianity, although debates concerning authorship and date continue. The recipients are described as “the twelve tribes scattered among the nations” (James 1:1), suggesting that the letter was addressed to Jewish-Christian communities experiencing social, economic, and spiritual challenges. The Hebrew Scriptures consistently portray covenant faithfulness as involving both trust in God and obedience to His commands. Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac as a sacrifice (Genesis 22) is presented by James as evidence that his faith was demonstrated through action: “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?” (James 2:21). James’ message challenges believers to move beyond passive religious commitment toward an active faith demonstrated through compassion, integrity, humility, and service. According to Green (2010), Christian spirituality cannot be separated from ethical responsibility because the life of faith is intended to reflect God’s character in human relationships and societal engagement.

Furthermore, contemporary theological discussions emphasize that Christian faith is not merely a private spiritual experience but a public reality that shapes human conduct. The call for social justice, care for the marginalized, responsible stewardship, and moral accountability reflects the practical implications of James’ teaching. The church’s credibility in society is closely connected to whether believers embody the values they proclaim. James therefore provides a theological framework for evaluating the authenticity of Christian witness in modern contexts.

The study of faith and works in James is also important because different Christian traditions have sometimes interpreted the relationship between belief and action differently. Some traditions have emphasized faith as the sole means of receiving God’s grace, while others have highlighted obedience and sacramental participation as essential aspects of Christian life. By analysing James’ arguments, biblical examples, historical interpretations, and contemporary applications, the study aims to demonstrate how authentic Christian faith should produce visible expressions of obedience, love, and ethical responsibility. The relevance of James’ message extends beyond first-century Christianity because it addresses a continuing challenge within the church: the need for believers to ensure that their confession of faith is consistently reflected in their actions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Throughout Christian history, the relationship between faith and works has generated significant theological debate and interpretive disagreement. Although Christianity emphasizes salvation through faith in God’s grace, the practical expression of that faith through righteous living remains a major concern. The Epistle of James presents a strong argument that faith without works is incomplete and ineffective, yet this teaching has sometimes been misunderstood or viewed as contradictory to the doctrine of justification by faith commonly associated with Paul’s writings.

One major problem is that some Christians interpret faith primarily as intellectual acceptance of Christian doctrines or personal belief in Jesus Christ without recognizing the necessity of ethical transformation. This understanding may result in a form of Christianity where confession is separated from conduct, creating a gap between religious belief and daily behaviour. James directly challenges this perspective by arguing that genuine faith must produce observable evidence through actions of obedience, mercy, and righteousness (James 2:14–26).

Another problem concerns the misunderstanding of works within Christian theology. Some believers may assume that emphasizing works undermines the doctrine of grace by suggesting that human actions contribute to salvation. Therefore, the central problem of this study is the apparent separation between professed faith and practical Christian conduct. This study addresses the need to understand how the Epistle of James presents the relationship between faith and works and how this understanding can contribute to authentic Christian living in the contemporary world.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

4. Explore the examples of Abraham and Rahab in James 2:14–26 as models of faith expressed through action.

By critically examining the relationship between faith and works, this study provides a deeper understanding of how Christian belief should influence personal morality, community relationships, and social responsibility.

First, the study will be significant to biblical scholars and students of theology because it contributes to the ongoing discussion concerning the relationship between James and Paul on the issue of justification and works. The apparent contrast between James’ statement that “a person is justified by works and not by faith alone” (James 2:24) and Paul’s emphasis on justification by faith has historically created interpretive difficulties. This study will provide a balanced examination of these passages by considering their literary, historical, and theological contexts. As Moo (2000) explains, careful interpretation reveals that James and Paul address different misunderstandings: Paul rejects the idea that human achievement can secure salvation, while James rejects the idea that a claim of faith without transformation can represent genuine Christianity.

In many contemporary contexts, Christianity faces criticism because of perceived contradictions between religious claims and actual behaviour. By returning to James’ teaching, this study highlights the importance of a faith that produces visible transformation and strengthens the credibility of Christian witness in society.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on a critical examination of the relationship between faith and works in the Epistle of James, particularly with emphasis on James 2:14–26, where the author directly discusses the connection between belief and action. The study examines the theological meaning of faith, the significance of works, and how James presents works as evidence of genuine faith rather than as an alternative means of salvation.

The study is limited to the Epistle of James as a primary biblical text. However, relevant passages from other New Testament writings, especially Paul’s teachings on justification by faith in Romans and Galatians, will be considered to provide comparative theological analysis. The study will also engage historical interpretations, including perspectives from the Protestant Reformation and contemporary biblical scholarship.

Furthermore, the study explores the implications of James’ teaching for contemporary Christian living, particularly in relation to discipleship, moral responsibility, social concern, and practical expressions of faith. It does not attempt to examine every theological debate concerning salvation, grace, or Christian ethics but focuses specifically on the relationship between faith and works as presented in James.

The study adopts a theological and biblical interpretive approach rather than an empirical investigation. It relies on biblical texts, theological writings, scholarly commentaries, and academic literature to analyse the subject.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Faith

Faith refers to a personal trust, confidence, and commitment toward God based on belief in His character, promises, and saving work. In the context of the Epistle of James, faith is not merely intellectual agreement but a living relationship with God that produces obedience and transformation. James emphasizes that genuine faith must be demonstrated through practical actions (James 2:17).

Works

Works refer to actions, behaviours, and expressions of obedience that demonstrate the reality of faith. In James’ theology, works do not represent human efforts to earn salvation but are the visible evidence that authentic faith exists. They include acts of obedience, mercy, love, and righteousness.
