Project – The Influence of Prosperity Theology on Christian Faith and Practices in Nigeria: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Religion has remained a significant institution in shaping human beliefs, values, social relationships, and interpretations of life experiences. Within Christianity, theological beliefs influence how individuals understand success, suffering, wealth, poverty, health, and personal transformation. Among contemporary Christian movements, particularly Pentecostal Christianity, one of the most influential theological developments has been the emergence and spread of prosperity theology, a belief system that emphasises the connection between faith, divine blessing, material prosperity, health, and personal success.
Prosperity theology, often referred to as the prosperity gospel, teaches that God desires believers to experience abundance, financial success, physical wellbeing, and victory over life challenges through faith, positive confession, obedience, and appropriate spiritual practices. Although interpretations differ among scholars and Christian groups, prosperity theology generally presents material and spiritual blessings as expressions of God’s favour upon believers. According to Bowler (2013), prosperity theology developed from earlier Pentecostal and charismatic traditions but expanded its focus from spiritual empowerment to include financial success, personal achievement, and material advancement.
The theological foundations of prosperity teaching are often traced to Pentecostal beliefs concerning divine blessing, healing, faith, and the power of confession. Supporters argue that biblical passages such as Deuteronomy 28:1–14, Malachi 3:10, John 10:10, and 3 John 2 demonstrate God’s desire for believers to experience abundance. Within this framework, faith is understood not only as trust in God but also as an active spiritual principle through which believers can access divine promises. According to Osteen (2004), positive confession and faith-filled attitudes are viewed as important pathways through which individuals experience God’s blessings.
The emergence of prosperity theology is closely connected to the growth of Pentecostal Christianity globally. Pentecostalism has become one of the fastest-growing Christian movements, particularly in Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia. Anderson (2014) explains that Pentecostal Christianity has expanded because of its emphasis on personal experience, spiritual power, healing, miracles, and practical responses to human challenges. In many African contexts, Pentecostal churches have provided theological explanations for economic hardship, social struggles, and personal aspirations.
In Nigeria, Pentecostal Christianity has experienced remarkable growth since the late twentieth century, becoming a dominant force within the country’s religious landscape. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have developed extensive networks, media platforms, educational institutions, humanitarian programmes, and international branches. Scholars such as Kalu (2008) and Marshall (2009) observe that Nigerian Pentecostalism has gained influence because it addresses everyday concerns, including poverty, unemployment, illness, family challenges, and the desire for social mobility.
The prosperity gospel has become particularly influential within Nigerian Pentecostal churches because it resonates with social realities characterised by economic uncertainty, unemployment, poverty, and inequality. For many Nigerians, prosperity teaching provides hope, encouragement, and a theological explanation for overcoming hardship. Marshall (2009) argues that Pentecostal spirituality in Nigeria often combines religious faith with aspirations for personal transformation, economic advancement, and social recognition.
Lagos State provides an important context for studying prosperity theology because it represents Nigeria’s major economic, commercial, and religious centre. The state hosts some of the largest Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, many of which have developed global influence through extensive ministries, media outreach, educational institutions, and social programmes. Research indicates that neo-Pentecostal churches in Lagos have significantly influenced urban life through their religious practices, infrastructures, and social interventions.
Prosperity theology has influenced various aspects of Christian faith and practice in Nigeria. It has affected preaching styles, worship expressions, prayer patterns, testimonies, fundraising methods, and believers’ expectations regarding divine intervention. Many churches organise special services focused on financial breakthrough, business success, career advancement, and supernatural favour. Through these practices, prosperity teaching has shaped how many Christians understand their relationship with God and their pursuit of personal development.
One major contribution of prosperity theology is its emphasis on hope, empowerment, and personal responsibility. Supporters argue that prosperity teachings encourage believers to develop positive attitudes, pursue education, engage in entrepreneurship, and believe in possibilities beyond their present circumstances. Freeman (2012) notes that Pentecostal movements in Africa often encourage economic participation and social mobility by promoting values such as discipline, hard work, and self-improvement.
Furthermore, prosperity-oriented churches have contributed to socio-economic activities through educational institutions, business networks, charity programmes, and empowerment initiatives. Some Pentecostal ministries have established schools, hospitals, skill acquisition programmes, and employment support projects. These activities demonstrate that prosperity theology has influenced not only individual beliefs but also broader social and institutional practices.
However, prosperity theology has also generated significant theological and academic debates. Critics argue that some forms of prosperity teaching present an overly materialistic understanding of Christianity by placing excessive emphasis on wealth, success, and personal comfort. They contend that such teachings may neglect important Christian themes such as suffering, sacrifice, humility, social justice, and concern for the poor. Ayegboyin (2006) argues that prosperity teaching in Nigerian Pentecostal churches requires critical theological evaluation because some interpretations may conflict with traditional Christian understandings of discipleship and service.
Another criticism concerns the possibility that prosperity theology may create unrealistic expectations among believers. Some scholars argue that linking faith directly with material success may cause individuals experiencing poverty or hardship to assume that their struggles result from inadequate faith or spiritual failure. This concern raises important questions regarding the pastoral implications of prosperity teachings.
Additionally, debates have emerged regarding the relationship between prosperity preaching and church leadership practices. Some scholars have examined how certain prosperity-oriented ministries emphasise charismatic authority, financial giving, and the accumulation of wealth by religious leaders. Smith (2021) argues that the Nigerian prosperity gospel presents complex relationships between religious aspirations, wealth accumulation, inequality, and social realities.
The influence of prosperity theology on Christian faith and practices therefore presents both opportunities and challenges. While it has provided hope, motivation, and empowerment for many believers, it has also raised concerns regarding theological balance, ethical leadership, and the interpretation of Christian teachings about wealth and blessing.
Despite extensive discussions on prosperity theology, there remains a need for further empirical investigation into how prosperity teachings influence the faith experiences, values, and religious practices of Christians within Nigerian Pentecostal churches. Existing studies have often focused on theological debates, church growth, or economic implications, while fewer studies have examined how ordinary believers interpret and apply prosperity teachings in their daily Christian lives.
Therefore, this study examines “The Influence of Prosperity Theology on Christian Faith and Practices in Nigeria: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Lagos State.” The study seeks to investigate the theological foundations of prosperity teaching, its influence on believers’ faith, its impact on Christian practices, and the challenges associated with its contemporary expression within Nigerian Pentecostal Christianity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Prosperity theology has become one of the most influential theological movements within contemporary Nigerian Pentecostal Christianity. Through preaching, worship services, media programmes, and church activities, prosperity teachings have shaped how many Nigerian Christians understand faith, blessing, success, and their relationship with God. However, despite its widespread acceptance, significant questions remain regarding its influence on Christian faith and religious practices.
One major problem is the tension between the biblical understanding of Christian faith and the prosperity interpretation of divine blessing. While prosperity theology emphasises wealth, success, and material breakthrough as signs of God’s favour, traditional Christian theology also emphasises sacrifice, humility, service, suffering, and spiritual transformation. The extent to which prosperity teachings maintain theological balance remains a subject of debate.
Another problem concerns the influence of prosperity theology on believers’ expectations. Many Christians approach religious practices with expectations of financial improvement, miracles, and personal advancement. While such expectations may provide motivation and hope, they may also create disappointment when expected outcomes do not occur.
Furthermore, concerns exist regarding the commercialisation of religious practices associated with some prosperity-oriented churches. Critics argue that excessive emphasis on offerings, financial contributions, and promises of material rewards may affect the authenticity of Christian worship and discipleship. Smith (2021) highlights the complexity of prosperity gospel practices in Nigeria, particularly regarding wealth, inequality, and religious authority.
Another challenge is the limited empirical understanding of how prosperity theology affects the everyday faith practices of Nigerian Christians. While scholarly discussions have examined the theological strengths and weaknesses of prosperity teachings, fewer studies have investigated how believers personally experience, interpret, and apply these teachings in areas such as prayer, worship, giving, decision-making, and lifestyle choices.
Additionally, there is limited agreement regarding whether prosperity theology contributes positively or negatively to Christian development in Nigeria. Some scholars view it as a source of empowerment and hope, while others consider it a distortion of Christian teachings. This disagreement creates the need for systematic research into its actual influence on Christian faith and practices.
Therefore, the problem of this study is the insufficient understanding of the influence of prosperity theology on Christian beliefs, values, and practices among Pentecostal believers in Nigeria. This study seeks to address this gap by examining selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State and assessing how prosperity teachings shape contemporary Christian experiences.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will guide the study:
H₀: Prosperity theology has no significant influence on Christian faith and practices among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because prosperity theology has become one of the most influential theological movements within contemporary Nigerian Christianity, particularly among Pentecostal churches. Its teachings have affected how many Christians understand faith, success, wealth, divine blessing, and their relationship with God. Examining its influence provides important insights into contemporary Christian beliefs and practices in Nigeria.
The study will be beneficial to Pentecostal church leaders, pastors, and ministry administrators by providing a deeper understanding of the implications of prosperity teachings on Christian spirituality and church practices. The findings may assist church leaders in evaluating their theological approaches and ensuring that teachings on prosperity remain balanced with biblical principles of humility, service, sacrifice, and spiritual maturity.
The study will also benefit Christian educators, theological institutions, and seminaries by contributing to academic discussions on Pentecostal theology, contemporary Christian movements, and African expressions of Christianity. The research may provide useful material for theological training programmes seeking to equip future ministers with critical understanding of prosperity teachings and their influence on believers.
Furthermore, the study will be useful to members of Pentecostal churches and Christian communities by promoting awareness of how prosperity theology shapes religious beliefs and behaviours. Understanding both the benefits and challenges associated with prosperity teachings may encourage believers to develop a balanced Christian worldview that integrates spiritual growth with responsible attitudes toward material blessings.
The research will contribute to the broader field of African Christian studies by examining how global theological movements are adapted within Nigerian cultural and social contexts. African Pentecostal Christianity has developed unique expressions influenced by local experiences of poverty, economic uncertainty, and aspirations for social advancement. Studying prosperity theology therefore provides insight into the relationship between religion, culture, and society.
The study will also be beneficial to scholars and researchers in theology, sociology of religion, and religious studies by providing empirical information on the influence of prosperity theology on contemporary Christian practices. Although previous studies have examined prosperity theology from theological and sociological perspectives, further research is needed to understand its practical impact on believers’ everyday religious experiences.
The findings may also assist church regulatory bodies and Christian organisations in reflecting on issues relating to theological accountability, pastoral responsibility, and ethical ministry practices. Since prosperity teachings influence financial practices, leadership structures, and believer expectations, understanding their effects is important for promoting responsible Christian ministry.
In addition, the study may contribute to discussions on the relationship between religion and development in Nigeria. Prosperity-oriented churches often promote entrepreneurship, personal responsibility, and economic empowerment. Examining these contributions alongside criticisms provides a balanced understanding of the role of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigerian society.
Finally, the study will serve as a reference material for future researchers interested in prosperity theology, Pentecostalism, Christian spirituality, religious transformation, and the relationship between theology and social realities in Africa.
