INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely recognised as a major instrument for human development, social mobility and national transformation. Through education, individuals acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies that enable them to participate productively in society. In the contemporary educational environment, the development of information and communication technologies has introduced significant changes in the way teaching and learning are organised. Digital technologies now provide opportunities for learners to access information beyond the traditional classroom and for teachers to employ instructional approaches that combine text, images, audio, video, animation and interactive activities.
The emergence of digital learning has consequently expanded the meaning and possibilities of classroom instruction. Digital learning involves the use of electronic and technology-enabled resources to facilitate the acquisition, communication, processing and application of knowledge. According to Bates (2019), digital technologies have transformed educational delivery by creating opportunities for flexible access to learning resources, communication and interaction between teachers and learners. The use of technology, therefore, is increasingly viewed not merely as an additional classroom facility but as an important component of contemporary educational practice.
Digital learning tools comprise a wide range of technological resources. These include desktop and laptop computers, smartphones, tablets, projectors, interactive whiteboards, educational software, digital textbooks, multimedia presentations, educational videos, online libraries, learning management systems and internet-based educational platforms. Their educational usefulness depends on the extent to which they are deliberately connected to instructional objectives. Mishra and Koehler (2006) argue that effective technology integration requires teachers to understand the relationship between technology, pedagogy and subject content. Their Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework emphasises that successful technology integration is more complex than simply introducing devices into classrooms.
The increasing importance of digital learning is also connected with changes in the information environment in which contemporary students live. Young people increasingly encounter information through smartphones, social media, websites, video platforms and other digital environments. Prensky (2001) famously described this generation of learners as “digital natives”, although later scholars have questioned whether age alone guarantees digital competence. What is important educationally is not simply students’ familiarity with digital devices but their ability to use those technologies purposefully for learning.
Digital learning tools can improve access to educational resources. In traditional classrooms, students may depend primarily on teachers and available textbooks. Digital technologies can broaden this resource base by allowing students to access electronic books, online articles, educational videos, simulations and other learning materials. Mayer (2021) explains that multimedia instruction can facilitate learning when words and visuals are appropriately combined and when unnecessary cognitive demands are avoided. Thus, digital resources can make some abstract or difficult concepts easier to understand.
The ability to represent information in multiple formats is particularly useful in secondary education. Students may find some concepts difficult to understand through verbal explanations alone. For example, a science teacher can use animation to demonstrate a biological process, a simulation to illustrate a physical phenomenon or a graphical representation to explain mathematical relationships. Hillmayr, Ziernwald, Reinhold, Hofer, and Reiss (2020), in a meta-analysis involving 92 studies of secondary-school mathematics and science, found that technology-supported instruction had a positive effect on students’ learning outcomes. They also found that teacher training significantly moderated the effects of technology use.
Digital learning tools may also enhance students’ motivation and engagement. Traditional teacher-centred instruction may sometimes provide limited opportunities for active student participation. Digital quizzes, educational games, simulations, collaborative platforms and interactive presentations can allow students to participate more actively in learning activities. According to Clark and Mayer (2016), well-designed e-learning environments can support learners by presenting information through carefully structured combinations of words, graphics and interactive elements.
Another important advantage is the possibility of providing immediate feedback. Some educational software and online platforms allow students to complete exercises and receive immediate information about their responses. Feedback can help learners identify errors, correct misconceptions and monitor their own progress. However, the educational benefits of technology cannot be separated from the quality of its implementation. UNESCO (2023) cautions that evidence concerning the educational impact of technology remains uneven and that technology does not automatically improve learning. The 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report stresses that technology should support human interaction and effective pedagogy rather than be treated as a substitute for teachers.
This observation is important because technology can be used for both educational and non-educational purposes. A smartphone, for example, can provide access to an electronic textbook or educational video, but it can equally be used for social media, entertainment or gaming during study time. Wang, Ni, Zhang, and Zhang (2024), in a meta-analysis of 48 empirical studies involving adolescents, found that digital-device use for educational purposes was positively associated with academic performance, whereas entertainment, socialising and gaming were negatively associated with academic performance.
The relationship between digital learning and academic performance is therefore dependent on how digital tools are used. Technology itself is not necessarily the determinant of improved academic achievement. Rather, the purpose, frequency, quality and context of technology use are important. Tamim et al. (2011), in a second-order meta-analysis of research accumulated over four decades, found a positive overall effect of technology on learning, but the findings also indicate that technology should be considered within the wider instructional environment.
Students’ digital competence is another important consideration. Digital literacy involves the ability to locate, evaluate, understand, create and communicate information using digital technologies. Students with adequate digital literacy are better positioned to search for relevant information, distinguish reliable from unreliable sources and use educational platforms effectively. A meta-analysis by Siddiq et al. (2016) demonstrated the importance of digital competence and computer and information literacy for students’ learning and participation in contemporary educational environments.
Teacher competence is equally important. Teachers are responsible for determining when digital technology is educationally appropriate and how it should be integrated into lessons. Mishra and Koehler (2006) argue that teachers need an integrated understanding of technology, pedagogy and subject matter. A teacher may possess knowledge of how to operate a computer or projector but still lack the pedagogical knowledge required to use the device effectively in teaching.
This distinction is supported by Hillmayr et al. (2020), who found that teacher training significantly influenced the effectiveness of digital tools in secondary-school mathematics and science education. Thus, investment in hardware without corresponding investment in teacher training may produce limited educational benefits.
Infrastructure constitutes another important condition for effective digital learning. Digital education requires access to electricity, functional devices, internet connectivity, software and, where necessary, technical support. In areas where electricity is unreliable or internet access is limited, the potential benefits of digital learning may remain largely unrealised.
This issue is particularly important in developing countries such as Nigeria. The digital divide between urban and rural communities can influence students’ access to educational technology. Students in well-resourced urban schools may have access to computer laboratories, broadband internet, smart classrooms and multiple digital devices, while students in rural schools may encounter shortages of basic digital infrastructure.
The situation makes rural secondary schools an important focus of research. Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State provides an appropriate context for examining this issue because educational institutions in rural communities may face infrastructural and socioeconomic constraints that differ from those in major urban centres.
Digital learning can nevertheless provide opportunities for rural students. Online resources can expose learners to educational materials that may not be available in their immediate environment. Students can access electronic books, instructional videos, online dictionaries, examination materials and other educational resources. This could potentially reduce some inequalities in access to knowledge.
However, the digital divide may also reproduce educational inequalities. Students whose families can afford smartphones, computers and internet subscriptions may enjoy greater opportunities for digital learning outside school than students from low-income households. The difference may become particularly significant when schools themselves have limited digital resources.
The importance of educational technology has increased following the disruption to conventional schooling caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools around the world adopted remote and technology-supported learning during periods of school closure. The experience demonstrated the potential of digital technologies to maintain educational continuity but also exposed inequalities in access to devices, electricity and internet services.
In Nigeria, the pandemic similarly highlighted the importance of digital learning infrastructure. Students who had access to smartphones, computers and internet connectivity were better positioned to participate in remote learning than those without such facilities. The experience strengthened the argument that digital literacy and access to technology are increasingly important components of educational resilience.
The academic-performance dimension is particularly important. Academic performance refers to the measurable level of students’ achievement in educational activities. It may be assessed through tests, examinations, continuous assessment and other measures of learning. Digital learning tools are relevant to education partly because of their potential to improve students’ understanding and consequently their academic achievement.
Research evidence provides support for this possibility. Cheung and Slavin (2013), in a meta-analysis of educational technology applications in mathematics education, found positive effects on mathematics achievement. Similarly, Hillmayr et al. (2020) reported positive effects of digital tools in secondary mathematics and science education.
At the same time, technology can produce limited or even negative outcomes when poorly implemented. UNESCO (2023) reports that the evidence base for educational technology remains insufficient in many contexts and warns against assuming that the mere presence of technology improves educational quality.
The Nigerian evidence is also relevant. Ayofe (2021), studying secondary-school students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State, found a positive relationship between e-learning and academic achievement, using students’ performance in English and Mathematics as indicators of achievement. More recent Nigerian research has similarly examined e-learning platforms and academic performance among secondary-school students, with findings pointing to the importance of actual engagement with the platforms rather than merely having access to them.
Olusegun, Uranta, Ukhurebor, Jokthan, and Nalwadda (2023) also examined e-learning and academic performance among secondary-school students and contributed to the growing Nigerian literature on technology-supported learning. These studies provide useful evidence, but their findings cannot automatically be generalised to all parts of Nigeria because school infrastructure, teacher competence, socioeconomic conditions and patterns of technology use vary considerably between locations.
The relationship between digital learning and academic achievement may also differ according to the particular digital tool employed. Educational videos may be more effective for explaining some concepts, while simulations may be more suitable for others. Online learning platforms may support assignments and assessment, whereas digital textbooks may primarily improve access to reading materials.
Consequently, the present study does not regard digital learning tools as a single homogeneous intervention. Rather, it considers the availability and utilisation of different digital resources and examines their relationship with students’ academic performance.
Another important consideration is the role of parents. Students’ access to technology outside school may depend on household income, parental attitudes and the availability of devices. Parents who understand the educational benefits of technology may encourage their children to use digital devices for academic purposes, whereas unsupervised access may increase exposure to distractions.
Gender can also affect access to digital technologies. In some households, boys and girls may not enjoy equal access to devices or equal freedom to use them. Cultural expectations, household responsibilities and economic circumstances may therefore influence the extent to which students benefit from digital learning.
Furthermore, students require guidance concerning responsible digital behaviour. The availability of information does not automatically translate into knowledge. Students must be able to evaluate sources, avoid plagiarism, protect their privacy and distinguish educational content from misinformation. Digital literacy is therefore an important component of effective digital learning.
The issue is particularly relevant to secondary education because this level of education prepares students for higher education, vocational training and participation in the labour market. Students who develop appropriate digital and academic competencies at secondary level may be better prepared for the requirements of contemporary higher education and employment.
The potential benefits of digital learning therefore extend beyond immediate examination performance. Digital learning can support communication, problem-solving, independent learning, collaboration, creativity and information literacy. However, these broader benefits depend on effective implementation and meaningful engagement.
For Ibaji secondary schools, the central issue is consequently not simply whether digital devices exist but whether students and teachers actually use them for educational purposes and whether such use contributes to improved academic outcomes.
The need for local evidence is reinforced by UNESCO’s observation that much of the available evidence on educational technology comes from relatively wealthy countries, while evidence from specific contexts remains inadequate. Research in Ibaji can therefore contribute context-specific evidence to the wider debate about digital education in Nigeria.
Against this background, this study examines the impact of digital learning tools on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ibaji, Kogi State. The study is concerned with the availability, accessibility and utilisation of digital learning tools and their relationship with students’ academic performance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing adoption of digital technology in education, many secondary schools in Nigeria continue to experience challenges relating to teaching resources, students’ academic performance, teacher capacity and unequal access to educational opportunities. Digital learning tools are frequently presented as a possible means of addressing some of these challenges. However, the extent to which these tools actually improve students’ academic performance remains uncertain, particularly in rural educational settings.
One major problem is the unequal availability of digital learning infrastructure. Computers, projectors, tablets, internet services and other digital resources may not be equally available across schools. Where schools lack functional devices or reliable electricity and internet connectivity, teachers and students may be unable to use digital tools consistently.
A second problem concerns teachers’ ability to integrate technology into instruction. Mishra and Koehler (2006) explain that effective technology integration requires a combination of technological, pedagogical and content knowledge. Consequently, merely providing schools with digital equipment may not result in improved learning if teachers lack the training required to integrate such tools into classroom instruction.
A third problem is students’ unequal access to digital resources. Some students may have smartphones, computers and internet access at home, while others may have no personal digital device. This inequality can affect opportunities for independent learning and may contribute to differences in academic achievement.
A fourth problem is inappropriate use of digital devices. Students may use technology primarily for social media, entertainment and gaming instead of academic purposes. Wang et al. (2024) found that the educational use of digital devices was positively related to academic performance, while entertainment, socialising and gaming were negatively associated with performance.
A fifth problem concerns the limited availability of context-specific evidence. UNESCO (2023) notes that robust evidence about the added value of digital technology in education remains insufficient, particularly for specific technologies and contexts. Therefore, assumptions based on findings from technologically advanced educational systems may not adequately explain what occurs in rural Nigerian secondary schools.
Existing Nigerian studies provide evidence that technology can be associated with improved academic performance. For instance, Ayofe (2021) found a positive relationship between e-learning and secondary-school students’ academic achievement in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. However, the infrastructural and socioeconomic conditions of Lagos cannot simply be assumed to exist in Ibaji.
Similarly, Hillmayr et al. (2020) found positive effects of digital tools on secondary-school mathematics and science learning, but also found that teacher training significantly moderated the effect. This suggests that the effectiveness of digital learning is dependent on implementation conditions.
The problem, therefore, is that although digital learning tools are increasingly regarded as important educational resources, there is insufficient empirical evidence concerning their actual impact on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ibaji.
The study consequently seeks to determine whether the utilisation of digital learning tools is significantly related to students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ibaji and to identify the factors that may facilitate or constrain their effective use.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to examine the impact of digital learning tools on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ibaji, Kogi State.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the availability of digital learning tools in secondary schools in Ibaji;
- determine the extent to which teachers and students utilise digital learning tools for teaching and learning;
- examine the relationship between the utilisation of digital learning tools and students’ academic performance;
- examine the influence of teachers’ digital competence on the effective utilisation of digital learning tools; and
- identify the major challenges affecting the effective utilisation of digital learning tools in secondary schools in Ibaji.

1.6 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the utilisation of digital learning tools and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ibaji.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to students because it will provide information on the educational value of digital learning tools and encourage their purposeful use for academic activities.
It will benefit teachers by highlighting the importance of digital competence and effective technology integration. The findings may assist teachers in selecting appropriate digital resources and incorporating them into classroom instruction.
The study will be useful to school administrators in identifying gaps in digital infrastructure, teacher training and technical support.
The findings will be relevant to the Kogi State Ministry of Education and other education authorities because they may provide evidence for planning digital-learning interventions in rural secondary schools.
The study will benefit parents and guardians by increasing awareness of the educational potential of digital devices and the need to guide students’ use of technology.
It will also be useful to educational technology organisations and development agencies seeking to implement technology-supported learning programmes in underserved communities.

1.8 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of digital learning tools on students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The independent variable is digital learning tools, covering computers, smartphones, tablets, projectors, educational videos, digital textbooks, educational software, internet resources and online learning platforms.
The dependent variable is students’ academic performance, measured through appropriate indicators such as test scores, examination results and continuous assessment.
The study will focus on secondary-school students and teachers in selected schools in Ibaji. It will examine availability, accessibility, frequency and purpose of use, teacher digital competence, challenges of utilisation and academic outcomes.
