CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Entrepreneurship has become an important instrument for employment creation, income generation, poverty reduction and local economic development, particularly in developing economies where formal employment opportunities may be insufficient to absorb the growing working population. Microenterprises constitute an important component of this entrepreneurial ecosystem because they require relatively small amounts of capital and can be established within local communities and markets. In Nigeria, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) constitute a substantial part of the business landscape and make important contributions to employment and national output. The 2021 National MSME Survey conducted by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that MSMEs contributed 46.31% to Nigeria’s nominal GDP and accounted for 87.9% of employment, while micro enterprises constituted the overwhelming majority of businesses. These figures demonstrate the economic importance of small-scale enterprises and also explain why the capacity of entrepreneurs to maintain their businesses during difficult circumstances is an important development concern (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021).

Women have increasingly participated in entrepreneurial activities as a means of generating income, supporting households, creating employment and achieving greater economic independence. Women’s entrepreneurship is particularly important in developing countries because many women enter self-employment when formal labour-market opportunities are limited or when they need to combine income-generating activities with household responsibilities. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor has consistently recognised women as important participants in the entrepreneurial process globally, with women establishing and operating businesses across different sectors and contributing to employment and economic development (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor [GEM], 2022). In Nigeria, however, women’s entrepreneurial activities are often conducted within environments characterised by limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, social expectations and institutional constraints. A national assessment of women’s entrepreneurship development in Nigeria by the International Labour Organization (ILO) identified access to gender-sensitive financial services as a significant concern for women-owned enterprises, noting that access to formal financial services remains challenging for many women entrepreneurs. Such constraints can make the ability to adapt, recover from setbacks and continue operating particularly important for women-owned microenterprises (ILO, 2022).

The concept of entrepreneurial resilience has therefore attracted increasing attention in entrepreneurship research. Entrepreneurial resilience refers broadly to an entrepreneur’s capacity to withstand adversity, adapt to changing circumstances, recover from setbacks and continue pursuing business objectives despite uncertainty and difficulties. Bullough and Renko (2013) established that resilience and entrepreneurial self-efficacy are particularly important in enabling entrepreneurs to pursue entrepreneurial activities under challenging circumstances. Their research suggests that entrepreneurs who possess confidence in their capabilities and the capacity to recover from adversity are better positioned to continue entrepreneurial activities when confronted with uncertainty. Similarly, Ayala and Manzano (2014), in a longitudinal study of established entrepreneurs, found that dimensions of resilience including hardiness, resourcefulness and optimism could predict entrepreneurial success. These findings suggest that resilience is not simply a psychological characteristic but can have important consequences for business outcomes, particularly where entrepreneurs operate in unstable or resource-constrained environments.

The relevance of entrepreneurial resilience becomes clearer when considering the operating conditions confronting microenterprises in Nigeria. Small businesses frequently face fluctuations in input prices, inadequate electricity supply, limited access to affordable credit, inflationary pressures, transportation difficulties, changing customer demand, competition and regulatory challenges. Under such circumstances, business owners may need to modify their product offerings, change suppliers, adjust prices, reduce unnecessary expenditure, rely on personal savings, use informal networks, adopt digital sales channels or diversify their income sources. Sholeye (2021), in a study of survival strategies among microenterprise owner-managers in Nigeria, found that resilience, relationship and network building, and sustainable business operations were important themes in explaining how entrepreneurs maintained their enterprises. This suggests that survival is not necessarily determined only by the amount of capital initially invested in a business; rather, the ability of entrepreneurs to respond creatively and persistently to adverse circumstances can also influence whether their enterprises remain operational.

For women entrepreneurs, the challenges associated with operating microenterprises can be intensified by gender-related social and institutional constraints. Women may simultaneously perform entrepreneurial, household and caregiving responsibilities, while also dealing with difficulties relating to access to capital, markets, business information, networks and formal institutional support. A study of women entrepreneurs in Nigeria by Egwe (2021) found a significant relationship between women’s entrepreneurial capabilities and business survival, demonstrating the importance of entrepreneurs’ knowledge, skills and capabilities to the continued existence of small-scale businesses. Similarly, research on women entrepreneurs in Africa has shown that women often encounter structural and cultural barriers that constrain business development, including patriarchal expectations, limited institutional support and difficulties in accessing resources (Adesanya et al., 2021). These conditions make resilience particularly important because women entrepreneurs may need to mobilise personal capabilities, social relationships and available resources to maintain their enterprises when conventional forms of support are inadequate.

The Southeast Nigerian context provides an especially relevant environment for examining entrepreneurial resilience among women-owned microenterprises. Research on women micro-entrepreneurs in Southeast Nigeria indicates that their entrepreneurial activities are frequently embedded in informal institutional environments where family relationships, social networks, community relationships and cultural expectations influence business decisions. A study by Akinyemi et al. (2022) on microfinance and micropreneurship in rural Southeast Nigeria, for instance, examined the experiences of women micro-entrepreneurs and highlighted the importance of informal institutions within an environment where women face patriarchal limitations and marginalisation from formal institutions. In Abia State specifically, Okezie and Igwebuike (2018) examined access to finance among women entrepreneurs and demonstrated the relevance of financial accessibility to the growth of women-owned businesses. These findings indicate that women’s capacity to survive in business cannot be separated from their ability to access and mobilise financial, social and institutional resources.

Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State, provides a significant setting for studying these issues because it is a major commercial centre characterised by extensive entrepreneurial activity, informal trade and indigenous enterprise. The market is particularly associated with leather goods, footwear, garments and other forms of small-scale production and trading and has played an important role in the economic development of Aba and the wider Southeast region. Recent research describes Ariaria as one of West Africa’s major commercial and entrepreneurial markets and emphasises its contribution to employment, domestic production, poverty reduction and economic activity (Effiong, Atu, & Eke, 2025). Women traders operating within such an environment must contend with competition, changing customer preferences, fluctuations in purchasing power, access-to-finance constraints, operating costs and other pressures that can threaten business continuity. Existing Nigerian research has established relationships between entrepreneurial resilience and business outcomes, while studies in Abia and Southeast Nigeria have highlighted financial, social and institutional constraints facing women entrepreneurs. However, there remains a need for a focused empirical study examining how entrepreneurial resilience relates specifically to the survival of women-owned microenterprises among market traders in Ariaria International Market, Aba. The present study therefore investigates entrepreneurial resilience and survival of women-owned microenterprises in Ariaria International Market, with particular attention to the ability of women traders to withstand challenges, adapt their businesses, mobilise resources and maintain business operations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Microenterprises are important contributors to employment, household income and economic activity in Nigeria, yet their continued survival remains a major concern. The 2021 MSME Survey indicates that microenterprises dominate the Nigerian enterprise landscape, but the sector continues to experience substantial constraints that affect enterprise development and performance (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021). Women-owned microenterprises may be particularly exposed to these constraints because women entrepreneurs frequently operate with limited financial resources and within social and institutional environments that can restrict access to business opportunities. Evidence from Nigeria indicates that access to finance remains a significant concern for women-owned enterprises, while research on women entrepreneurs has also identified social and structural barriers affecting business development (ILO, 2022; Adesanya et al., 2021). The problem, therefore, is not simply that women establish businesses, but whether they possess sufficient resilience and adaptive capacity to keep those businesses operating when confronted with persistent economic and institutional pressures.

A second problem relates to the increasingly uncertain environment in which microenterprises operate. Rising operating costs, unstable purchasing power, changing market conditions, limited access to affordable finance, infrastructure deficiencies and intense competition can make it difficult for small businesses to maintain stable operations. Women traders may respond to these challenges by changing prices, reducing expenses, changing suppliers, diversifying products, borrowing from informal sources, relying on social networks or modifying their marketing methods. However, the use of such strategies does not automatically guarantee business survival. Sholeye (2021) found that resilience, networking and sustainable business practices were important themes in the survival of Nigerian microenterprises, while Bullough and Renko (2013) demonstrated that resilience is important to entrepreneurial action during difficult circumstances. The problem is that there is still insufficient evidence on the extent to which such resilience-related capacities actually contribute to the continued survival of women-owned microenterprises operating in a major informal market environment such as Ariaria International Market.

The problem is also significant because women entrepreneurs in Abia State operate within a context where access to resources can influence the growth and sustainability of their enterprises. Okezie and Igwebuike (2018) examined financial accessibility among women entrepreneurs in Abia State and highlighted the importance of finance to women’s business growth. Research on Southeast Nigeria has similarly shown that women micro-entrepreneurs operate within institutional environments where informal institutions, cultural expectations and patriarchal limitations can affect their entrepreneurial experiences (Akinyemi et al., 2022). Although these studies provide useful evidence concerning finance, institutions and women’s entrepreneurship, they do not adequately explain whether the ability of women traders to remain persistent, resourceful, optimistic and adaptable during difficult periods contributes to the survival of their businesses in Ariaria International Market. This creates a practical and empirical problem because policymakers and business-support organisations may have limited evidence on the particular resilience capacities that enable women-owned microenterprises to remain operational within this important commercial environment.

The final problem concerns the research gap surrounding the specific relationship between entrepreneurial resilience and the survival of women-owned microenterprises in Ariaria International Market. Existing studies have examined entrepreneurial resilience and business success generally, women’s entrepreneurial capabilities and business survival, access to finance among women entrepreneurs in Abia State, and the challenges faced by women micro-entrepreneurs in Southeast Nigeria. Recent Nigerian evidence also suggests that entrepreneurial resilience is positively associated with SME success, with dimensions such as hardiness, resourcefulness and optimism contributing to business outcomes (Olughor, Oladele, & Oladejo, 2025). However, these studies do not provide sufficient evidence specifically on women-owned microenterprises operated by market traders in Ariaria International Market. Given the market’s importance to Aba’s commercial economy and the distinctive pressures experienced by women traders, there is a need to determine whether entrepreneurial resilience significantly influences the survival of their businesses. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by empirically examining the relationship between entrepreneurial resilience and survival of women-owned microenterprises in Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State.

1.5 Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between entrepreneurial resilience and the survival of women-owned microenterprises among market traders in Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to women entrepreneurs and market traders because it will provide evidence concerning the role of resilience in maintaining business operations during difficult circumstances. The findings may help women traders identify personal and business capabilities that can strengthen their capacity to respond to market shocks, financial difficulties and changing customer demands.

The study will also be useful to entrepreneurship development agencies, particularly organisations responsible for supporting MSMEs and women-owned businesses. The findings may assist such organisations in designing training programmes that go beyond conventional financial support to include resilience-building, business adaptability, networking, resource management and crisis-response capabilities.

The study will be beneficial to financial institutions and microfinance organisations. Evidence concerning the challenges and resilience strategies of women traders may help financial institutions develop products and services that are more responsive to the realities of microenterprise operators.

The study will also be relevant to government agencies and policymakers at the federal, state and local levels. Understanding the factors that enable women-owned microenterprises to survive may support the development of policies relating to access to finance, market infrastructure, business training, taxation, security, electricity and other conditions affecting informal enterprises.

The study will further benefit market associations and leadership structures within Ariaria International Market. The findings may help market leaders understand the difficulties confronting women traders and develop cooperative mechanisms, information-sharing systems, training programmes and other forms of support that can strengthen enterprise survival.

Finally, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in entrepreneurship, small-business management, women’s entrepreneurship and organisational resilience. It will provide empirical evidence from Ariaria International Market and may serve as a reference point for future researchers investigating entrepreneurial resilience and microenterprise survival in Nigeria and other developing economies.
