Project – Entrepreneurial Networking and Access to Business Opportunities among Start-up Owners: A Study of Technology Start-ups in Yaba, Lagos State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Entrepreneurship has increasingly become an important mechanism for economic development, innovation, employment creation and the commercialization of new ideas. Start-up businesses, particularly technology-oriented ventures, operate in environments characterized by uncertainty, resource limitations and rapidly changing market conditions. Unlike established firms, start-ups often lack extensive financial resources, established customer bases, organizational legitimacy and access to reliable market information. Consequently, entrepreneurs frequently depend on relationships with other entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, customers, professional associations and support institutions to obtain resources and information that may not otherwise be readily available to them. Stam, Arzlanian and Elfring (2014), in a meta-analysis of 61 independent samples, found a positive and significant relationship between entrepreneurs’ social capital and small-firm performance, with network diversity having particularly important effects. Their findings demonstrate that entrepreneurial networks can constitute valuable resources for firms operating under conditions of resource scarcity.

Entrepreneurial networking refers broadly to the process through which entrepreneurs establish, maintain and utilize relationships with individuals and organizations for business-related purposes. Such relationships can include contacts with fellow entrepreneurs, suppliers, customers, investors, mentors, government agencies, professional bodies, financial institutions and technology communities. Networking enables entrepreneurs to exchange knowledge, obtain referrals, gain access to expertise and identify resources and opportunities that may otherwise remain inaccessible. Hoang and Antoncic (2003) argued that entrepreneurial networks are important because relationships provide entrepreneurs with access to information, resources and social support that influence venture development. More specifically, Singh, Hills, Lumpkin and Hybels (1999) found among information-technology entrepreneurs that network size and the number of weak ties were positively related to the number of ideas and opportunities recognized by entrepreneurs. This suggests that networking can extend the entrepreneur’s informational field and improve exposure to potential business opportunities.

Access to business opportunities is particularly important for start-up owners because opportunities constitute the basis upon which new ventures develop products, enter markets, acquire customers, secure investment and expand their operations. Business opportunities may take the form of potential customers, supply contracts, strategic partnerships, investment possibilities, new markets, technological collaborations, government programmes, accelerator opportunities or information about emerging market needs. Shane and Venkataraman (2000) identified the discovery, evaluation and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities as central to the field of entrepreneurship. Similarly, Ozgen and Baron (2007) demonstrated that mentors, informal industry networks and professional forums can provide social sources of information that positively influence opportunity recognition among entrepreneurs. Thus, entrepreneurs who maintain broad and useful networks may have greater exposure to information that can help them recognize and exploit emerging opportunities.

The importance of networking becomes even more pronounced in technology start-ups because technological businesses frequently operate within innovation ecosystems characterized by rapid knowledge exchange, specialized skills, investment relationships and collaboration. Technology entrepreneurs may require relationships with software developers, technology experts, investors, accelerators, incubators, universities, customers and other start-up founders to develop and commercialize their ideas. Pirolo and Presutti (2010) found that different configurations of strong and weak social ties between start-ups and their major stakeholders could influence economic and innovative performance outcomes. Similarly, Shu, Ren and Zheng (2018) conceptualized entrepreneur network capability in terms of network orientation, network building, network maintenance and network coordination, demonstrating the importance of an entrepreneur’s ability to actively develop and manage relationships in discovering entrepreneurial opportunities.

The Nigerian technology entrepreneurship environment provides a particularly relevant context for understanding the role of entrepreneurial networks. Lagos has developed into one of the country’s most important centres of technology entrepreneurship, innovation and start-up activity, with Yaba emerging as a prominent technology cluster. Gómez, Manya and Fransen (2023) described Yaba as a growing ICT entrepreneurial ecosystem in Nigeria and found that the area’s entrepreneurial vitality is associated with the density and diversity of actors and networks coordinated through trust and resilience. Their study also showed that informal networks intersect with activities involving finance, training, infrastructure, political engagement and other forms of entrepreneurial support. This demonstrates that networking in Yaba is not merely a social activity but can form part of the mechanisms through which technology entrepreneurs gain access to resources and opportunities.

Within the Yaba technology ecosystem, networking can facilitate access to investment, markets, mentorship, skills, partnerships and business information. Gómez et al. (2023) found that entrepreneurs in Yaba reported that networks and technology hubs helped connect start-ups to investors, funding opportunities, other entrepreneurs and potential markets. The researchers also observed that informal networks facilitated the exchange of information about suppliers, buyers and technology, while trusted relationships could lead to referrals and business deals. In addition, technology hubs played an important role in coordinating mentorship, training, funding opportunities and connections to local and global markets. These findings are especially relevant to the present study because they indicate that Yaba possesses an ecosystem in which relationships may directly or indirectly influence the ability of technology start-ups to identify and access business opportunities.

Despite the apparent importance of networking within the Yaba technology ecosystem, the extent to which entrepreneurial networking translates into actual access to business opportunities among start-up owners requires further empirical investigation. The Lagos entrepreneurial ecosystem is not necessarily equally accessible to every entrepreneur, and differences in network size, diversity, strength, trust, network-management capability and connections to influential actors may affect the benefits entrepreneurs derive from the ecosystem. Oyedele, Obembe and colleagues’ study of the Lagos entrepreneurial ecosystem reported that interactions can be collaborative, stratified, clustered or unleveraged and argued that entrepreneurs with stronger social capital may be better positioned to connect to ecosystem resources. This raises an important question concerning whether entrepreneurial networking significantly influences access to business opportunities among technology start-up owners specifically within Yaba.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Technology start-ups are expected to contribute to innovation, employment creation and economic transformation, yet many new ventures operate under considerable resource constraints. New entrepreneurs may have innovative products or services but lack adequate access to customers, investors, technical expertise, market information, partnerships and other resources required to transform ideas into sustainable businesses. Stam et al. (2014) established that entrepreneurs’ social capital is positively associated with small-firm performance, while emphasizing that the effects of social capital can vary according to network characteristics, industry and institutional context. This suggests that merely owning a business or possessing an innovative idea may not be sufficient if the entrepreneur lacks the relationships through which relevant business resources and opportunities can be accessed.

A major problem is that business opportunities are not always distributed evenly among start-up owners. Entrepreneurs who are connected to mentors, investors, industry associations, experienced founders and other influential actors may receive information about potential customers, partnerships, funding opportunities and markets earlier than entrepreneurs operating with limited networks. Singh et al. (1999) found that network size and weak ties were positively associated with opportunity recognition among information-technology entrepreneurs, while Ozgen and Baron (2007) established that mentors, informal industry networks and professional forums can provide information that facilitates opportunity recognition. Consequently, start-up owners with narrow or poorly managed networks may experience difficulty identifying or accessing opportunities even when such opportunities exist within their business environment.

The problem may be particularly important in Yaba because the area contains a dense concentration of technology entrepreneurs, innovation hubs, investors, support organizations and other ecosystem actors. Gómez et al. (2023) found that Yaba’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is characterized by informal trust networks, diverse actors and relationships that facilitate access to funding, training, mentorship, information and markets. However, the existence of these networks does not necessarily mean that every start-up owner is equally positioned to benefit from them. Research on the wider Lagos entrepreneurial ecosystem has identified blockages and distortions in resource flows and suggested that entrepreneurs with stronger social capital may have greater ability to connect with and extract value from the ecosystem.

The specific problem, therefore, is the limited empirical understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurial networking and access to business opportunities among technology start-up owners in Yaba, Lagos State. Existing studies have established the importance of social capital, networks and entrepreneurial ecosystems, while research specifically on Yaba has demonstrated the presence of trust-based networks and ecosystem resources. However, there remains a need to quantitatively examine whether dimensions of entrepreneurial networking—such as network size, network diversity, networking frequency, relationship strength and network-management capability—are significantly associated with access to business opportunities among technology start-up owners in Yaba. Addressing this gap will provide evidence that can help entrepreneurs, technology hubs, investors, policymakers and entrepreneurship-support organizations understand how networking can be leveraged to improve opportunity access and strengthen the development of technology start-ups.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial networking and access to business opportunities among start-up owners in selected technology start-ups in Yaba, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to technology start-up owners because it will provide empirical information on how entrepreneurial relationships can contribute to access to customers, investment opportunities, partnerships, market information, mentorship and other business opportunities. The findings may encourage entrepreneurs to deliberately develop and manage networks that provide useful business information and resources.

The study will also be useful to technology hubs, incubators and accelerators operating in Lagos. The findings may assist these organizations in understanding the networking needs of start-up owners and designing programmes that facilitate meaningful connections between entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, customers, corporations and other ecosystem actors.

The study will benefit investors and business-support organizations by providing insight into the role that entrepreneurial networks play in connecting technology start-ups to business opportunities. This may help such stakeholders develop more effective mechanisms for identifying promising start-ups and connecting them to relevant markets, technical resources and investment opportunities.

The study will be useful to government agencies and policymakers concerned with entrepreneurship, innovation, youth employment and technology development. The findings may provide evidence for policies and programmes that strengthen entrepreneurial ecosystems, networking platforms, technology hubs and business-support structures for emerging technology firms.

Finally, the study will contribute to academic literature on entrepreneurship, social capital, entrepreneurial ecosystems and business opportunity recognition. It will provide location-specific evidence from Yaba, Lagos State, and may serve as a reference for researchers investigating entrepreneurial networking and opportunity access in Nigeria and other emerging economies.
