Project – Influence of Digital Marketing Strategies on Customer Acquisition and Business Growth among Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Abuja Municipal Area Council
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The business environment has undergone significant transformation as a result of the rapid development and adoption of digital technologies. Marketing, which traditionally relied heavily on physical interactions, print advertising, radio, television and other conventional media, has increasingly shifted toward digital platforms that allow businesses to communicate with existing and potential customers in real time. Digital marketing involves the use of internet-based and electronic technologies to promote products and services, communicate with target markets, build relationships and generate business value. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2019) explain that digital marketing provides organisations with opportunities to use digital technologies and media to reach customers, develop relationships and achieve marketing objectives more efficiently. Similarly, Kotler, Kartajaya, and Setiawan (2021) argue that digitalisation has fundamentally changed how consumers discover, evaluate and purchase products, thereby requiring businesses to integrate digital channels into their marketing activities. The increasing importance of digital marketing is particularly relevant to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which often operate with limited financial and human resources and therefore require cost-effective ways of reaching their target markets.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are important contributors to economic development because they provide employment, stimulate entrepreneurship, support household incomes and contribute to innovation and economic activity. In Nigeria, the MSME sector represents a substantial component of the national economy. The NBS/SMEDAN MSME survey reported that MSMEs accounted for 96.9% of businesses and 87.9% of employment in Nigeria, demonstrating their importance to economic development and employment generation (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS] & Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria [SMEDAN], 2021). PwC (2024) similarly noted that Nigerian MSMEs contribute substantially to GDP and employment despite operating under considerable financial, infrastructural and regulatory constraints. Because SMEs generally have smaller marketing budgets than large corporations, digital platforms provide opportunities to communicate with customers, promote products and compete beyond their immediate physical locations. Consequently, the adoption of effective digital marketing strategies may be particularly important for SMEs seeking to acquire customers and achieve sustainable growth.
Digital marketing strategies encompass several interconnected approaches through which businesses attract, communicate with and retain customers. These strategies include social media marketing, search engine marketing, email marketing, content marketing, mobile marketing, online advertising and other forms of digital customer engagement. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2019) emphasise that effective digital marketing requires organisations to integrate different digital channels around customer needs and organisational objectives rather than merely establishing an online presence. In the Nigerian SME environment, the adoption of such strategies is becoming increasingly relevant because consumers are using digital platforms to search for information, compare alternatives, communicate with brands and make purchasing decisions. A recent Nigerian study found that technological, organisational and environmental factors significantly influence SME adoption of digital marketing, while digital marketing adoption was associated with improved sales performance (Musa & Garba, 2024). This suggests that digital marketing may provide SMEs with an important mechanism for expanding market visibility and attracting prospective customers.
Social media marketing is particularly significant because platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok and other digital networks enable SMEs to communicate directly with large audiences at relatively low cost. Social media allows businesses to display products, respond to customer enquiries, receive feedback, encourage referrals and develop online communities around their brands. Tuten and Solomon (2018) observe that social media marketing enables organisations to facilitate interaction, engagement and value creation between brands and consumers. Evidence from Abuja also supports the importance of digital marketing activities. Veron, Kassah, and Ikupolati (2026), in a study of MSMEs in Garki and Dutse markets in Abuja, found that digital marketing had a positive and statistically significant effect on MSME performance, with social media marketing emerging as the strongest predictor, followed by content marketing and search engine marketing. These findings indicate that digital marketing strategies may be especially valuable to SMEs operating in competitive urban markets such as Abuja.
Customer acquisition is another important dimension of SME success. Customer acquisition refers to the processes and activities through which businesses identify, attract, convert and establish relationships with new customers. In conventional marketing environments, customer acquisition may depend heavily on physical visibility, personal selling, referrals, print advertising and other traditional approaches. Digital marketing, however, enables businesses to identify specific customer segments, communicate targeted promotional messages and measure customer responses using digital analytics. Kotler et al. (2021) argue that digital technologies have enhanced the ability of organisations to personalise marketing communication and engage consumers throughout the customer journey. Evidence from Abuja demonstrates the potential of digital strategies to influence consumer responses. Adelakun, Yakubu, and Bello (2025) found that mobile marketing, online affiliate marketing and email marketing had statistically significant positive effects on consumer buying behaviour among selected SMEs in Abuja. This indicates that digital marketing can potentially move beyond awareness creation to influence customer engagement, purchase intention and actual customer acquisition.
Business growth is also closely connected with the ability of SMEs to expand their customer base, increase revenue, improve market reach and maintain competitiveness. Digital marketing can potentially contribute to business growth by reducing barriers to market access and allowing small businesses to reach customers beyond their immediate physical locations. Amin (2021), in a study of SMEs in Abuja, found that marketing strategies had a positive relationship with SME performance and concluded that effective marketing strategies could contribute to improved business outcomes. More recent research has provided stronger evidence concerning digital approaches. Lawal, Abu Seman, and Rashid (2026) found that e-commerce implementation and social media marketing influence the performance of Nigerian SMEs and identified digital skills, infrastructure and marketing resources as important issues affecting digital business development. Thus, digital marketing may serve as an important strategic resource through which SMEs can strengthen market reach, acquire customers and support revenue and business growth.
The relevance of digital marketing is particularly pronounced in Abuja Municipal Area Council, where SMEs operate within a competitive urban commercial environment characterised by diverse consumers, increasing digital connectivity and competition among businesses. Recent empirical research specifically examining SMEs in AMAC found that digital transformation significantly enhanced operational efficiency and market reach, while also producing a moderate positive effect on financial performance (Buba & Joseph, 2026). Similarly, research conducted among Abuja-based startups found that social media marketing had a strong and statistically significant effect on revenue growth, while mobile applications significantly enhanced operational efficiency (Ezekiel, 2024). These findings suggest that digital technologies and marketing practices are increasingly relevant to SME competitiveness within Abuja. However, the mere availability of digital platforms does not guarantee effective customer acquisition or business growth. SMEs may face challenges including inadequate digital skills, limited financial resources, poor-quality content, weak digital infrastructure, lack of strategic planning and difficulties measuring the effectiveness of online campaigns. Therefore, there is a need to examine the extent to which digital marketing strategies actually influence customer acquisition and business growth among SMEs operating specifically within Abuja Municipal Area Council. This study is consequently designed to investigate the influence of digital marketing strategies on customer acquisition and business growth among small and medium-sized enterprises in Abuja Municipal Area Council.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Small and medium-sized enterprises play a major role in employment generation and economic activity in Nigeria, yet many SMEs continue to experience difficulties in attracting sufficient customers, expanding their markets and achieving sustainable growth. The competitive nature of the modern business environment means that SMEs can no longer rely exclusively on traditional marketing approaches if they intend to reach consumers who increasingly use digital platforms for information and purchasing decisions. The NBS and SMEDAN (2021) reported the enormous contribution of MSMEs to employment and business activity in Nigeria, while PwC (2024) identified digital and technological transformation as an important area for improving MSME productivity and profitability. Despite this importance, many SMEs may not possess the financial resources, technical knowledge or strategic capacity required to effectively utilise digital marketing channels.
A second problem concerns the inconsistent adoption and effective utilisation of digital marketing strategies among SMEs. Although social media, email marketing, mobile marketing, search engine marketing and content marketing provide opportunities for businesses to communicate with consumers, some SMEs may use these platforms without clearly defined marketing objectives, appropriate customer targeting or systematic evaluation of results. Recent research among SMEs in Abuja found significant effects of mobile marketing, affiliate marketing and email marketing on consumer buying behaviour, demonstrating the potential value of these strategies (Adelakun et al., 2025). However, the existence of digital marketing activities does not necessarily mean that SMEs are effectively converting online visibility into new customers. The problem, therefore, is whether SMEs in AMAC are implementing digital marketing strategies in ways that effectively translate digital engagement into customer acquisition.
Another problem relates to the connection between digital marketing and actual business growth. SMEs may invest time and resources in social media promotion, online advertising and digital content creation without knowing whether these activities generate measurable increases in customers, sales, revenue and market expansion. While empirical evidence from Abuja has demonstrated positive relationships between marketing strategies and SME performance (Amin, 2021), more recent research has specifically shown that social media marketing and other digital marketing practices can contribute to SME performance (Veron et al., 2026). Nevertheless, differences in location, sector, digital capability and business characteristics mean that findings from broader Abuja studies cannot automatically explain the situation of SMEs operating within AMAC. There is therefore a need to establish whether digital marketing strategies are significantly associated with customer acquisition and business growth within this specific geographical context.
Furthermore, although recent studies have examined digital marketing, digital transformation and SME performance in Abuja and Nigeria, there remains a need for a focused study that simultaneously considers customer acquisition and business growth as important outcomes of digital marketing among SMEs in AMAC. For example, Buba and Joseph (2026) focused on digital transformation and SME performance in AMAC, particularly operational efficiency, market reach and financial performance, while Veron et al. (2026) examined digital marketing and MSME performance in Garki and Dutse markets. These studies provide valuable evidence but leave room for further examination of how specific digital marketing strategies influence the acquisition of new customers and the broader growth of SMEs within AMAC. The central problem of this study is therefore to determine whether and to what extent digital marketing strategies influence customer acquisition and business growth among SMEs in Abuja Municipal Area Council.
