Project – The Effect of Digital Marketing Strategies on the Sales Performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Study of Selected SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) constitute an important component of economic activity because they contribute to employment creation, income generation, production of goods and services, innovation and the development of local markets. In Nigeria, the importance of the SME sector is particularly evident from the large number of enterprises operating across different sectors of the economy. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) reported that Nigeria had 39,654,385 micro, small and medium enterprises as at December 2020, with small and medium enterprises accounting for 1,240,965 enterprises. The survey also reported that Lagos State had the highest number of enterprises among the states. However, the report identified several challenges affecting enterprise development, including access to finance, markets, infrastructure, technology and the broader business environment (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021). These conditions make marketing particularly important to SMEs because the ability of a business to identify customers, communicate its value proposition and convert market opportunities into sales can influence its survival and growth. In an increasingly technology-driven business environment, digital platforms have therefore become important alternatives to conventional marketing channels for SMEs seeking to reach existing and potential customers.

Digital marketing refers broadly to the use of internet-enabled and digital technologies to communicate with customers, promote products and services, build brands, generate leads and facilitate transactions. Digital marketing strategies may include social media marketing, search engine marketing, email marketing, mobile marketing, online advertising, content marketing and other internet-based promotional activities. Unlike some traditional marketing methods that may require substantial financial resources, digital platforms can provide SMEs with relatively accessible mechanisms for reaching targeted audiences, communicating directly with consumers and monitoring customer responses. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023), in a Nigerian study, examined social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, mobile marketing and internet marketing and found that the combined use of digital marketing strategies had a significant positive influence on SME performance. Similarly, Wu, Botella-Carrubi and Blanco-González-Tejero (2024) demonstrated that digital marketing strategy and SME performance can be understood through organisational capabilities, innovativeness and proactiveness. These findings indicate that digital marketing is not simply an alternative promotional medium but can form part of the strategic resources through which SMEs compete in contemporary markets.

Among the various digital marketing strategies, social media marketing has received considerable attention because platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok and other social networking services allow businesses to communicate directly with customers and display products or services to potentially large audiences. Social media also allows SMEs to obtain customer feedback, respond to enquiries, build relationships and encourage electronic word-of-mouth communication. Lawal and Adejuwon (2023), in their study of selected SMEs in South-West Nigeria, found a positive relationship between social media marketing and sales growth. Their analysis showed that social interaction and customization had statistically significant relationships with sales growth, although other dimensions such as branded entertainment, customer engagement and electronic word-of-mouth did not individually produce statistically significant effects in their model. This is important because it demonstrates that the mere presence of an SME on social media does not automatically guarantee improved sales; rather, the manner in which digital platforms are used may determine the commercial outcomes obtained from them. Thus, examining specific digital marketing strategies and their relationship with sales performance is necessary rather than assuming that all forms of digital activity have identical effects (Lawal & Adejuwon, 2023).

Sales performance represents an important indicator of the commercial success of SMEs because it reflects the extent to which a business is able to convert its products or services into revenue-generating transactions. It may be assessed through indicators such as sales growth, revenue growth, number of customers, customer acquisition, market reach, repeat purchases and achievement of sales targets. Digital marketing may influence these outcomes by increasing product visibility, improving customer communication, facilitating targeted advertising and reducing geographical limitations on market access. However, the relationship between digital marketing and sales is not necessarily automatic or uniform across firms. Stephen and Galak (2012) found that different social media and traditional media activities could influence sales outcomes through different mechanisms, while a later study by Kumar et al. (2021) showed that social media activity could increase website traffic without necessarily producing equivalent increases in orders and sales in every circumstance. These findings suggest that digital marketing strategies may generate different outcomes depending on how they are designed, implemented and integrated with other business activities. For SMEs, the effectiveness of digital marketing therefore needs to be considered in relation to measurable sales outcomes rather than simply the frequency with which digital platforms are used.

The Nigerian business environment provides an important context for examining the relationship between digital marketing and SME sales performance. Nigerian SMEs operate in an environment characterised by intense competition, changing consumer behaviour, increasing internet use, infrastructure constraints, limited financial resources and the need to reach customers efficiently. The SMEDAN and NBS (2021) survey identified access to markets, finance and technology among the issues affecting Nigerian MSMEs and reported that Lagos State had the largest number of enterprises among the states. Digital marketing can potentially help SMEs address some market-access challenges by enabling businesses to promote products beyond their immediate physical locations and maintain continuous communication with customers. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) found significant positive effects of social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, mobile marketing and internet marketing on SME performance in Nigeria. In addition, Ayokunmi, Seman and Rashid (2026) found that e-commerce implementation and social media marketing were significant factors in SME performance in Nigeria, while also identifying low digital skills, inadequate infrastructure and limited marketing resources as continuing challenges. These findings suggest that digital marketing offers opportunities for Nigerian SMEs while simultaneously presenting implementation challenges that may influence the extent to which such strategies translate into improved business outcomes.

The Lagos State environment is especially relevant because the state represents a major concentration of commercial and entrepreneurial activity in Nigeria. The SMEDAN/NBS national survey reported that Lagos had the highest number of enterprises among Nigerian states, indicating the intensity of economic activity and competition within the state (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021). Within Lagos State, Ikeja represents a significant commercial environment containing businesses operating across retail, services, technology, hospitality, fashion, professional services and other sectors. The importance of digital marketing within Ikeja is supported by empirical evidence. Fadeyi, Peter, Asiyanbola, Adebayo, Olotu and Olugbemi (2026) specifically investigated social media marketing and SME performance in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State, using data from 379 workers in 15 selected SMEs in Computer Village. Their study reported that content quality and budget allocation for social media marketing had positive and significant effects on SME performance. This finding is particularly relevant because it demonstrates that digital marketing-related factors can be associated with SME outcomes within the geographical environment of the present study. However, SME performance is broader than sales performance, and the specific effect of a wider range of digital marketing strategies on sales performance in selected SMEs in Ikeja remains worthy of focused investigation.

Despite the growing adoption of digital platforms by Nigerian businesses, questions remain concerning whether digital marketing strategies consistently translate into improved sales performance among SMEs. Existing studies have established positive relationships between digital marketing and SME performance, but findings differ according to the specific strategy, industry, geographical location and performance indicator considered. Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) found positive relationships between social media marketing and sales growth among SMEs in South-West Nigeria, while Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) found that several digital marketing strategies jointly influenced SME performance in Nigeria. More specifically, the Ikeja study by Fadeyi et al. (2026) found that content quality and budget allocation significantly influenced SME performance, but it did not focus exclusively on sales performance as the dependent variable. Furthermore, Wu et al. (2024) observed that digital marketing strategy is linked with firm performance through organisational capabilities, suggesting that managerial and strategic factors can affect the outcomes of digital marketing. Therefore, there is a need for a focused empirical study that examines how digital marketing strategies such as social media marketing, search engine marketing, email marketing, mobile marketing and content marketing influence sales performance among selected SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State. The present study is designed to address this need by providing location-specific evidence on the relationship between digital marketing strategies and the sales performance of SMEs.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises constitute a substantial part of Nigeria’s business environment, yet many SMEs continue to face challenges relating to market access, competition, finance, technology and business sustainability. The SMEDAN/NBS (2021) national survey identified access to markets, finance, infrastructure and technology among the challenges affecting Nigerian enterprises. In a competitive commercial environment such as Lagos State, SMEs must continually find effective ways of attracting customers, retaining existing customers and increasing sales. Traditional marketing methods may provide useful promotional opportunities, but digital technologies have increasingly become important channels through which businesses can communicate with consumers. The problem, however, is that the availability of digital platforms does not necessarily mean that SMEs use them effectively or that their use automatically results in higher sales. Ayokunmi et al. (2026) identified low digital skills, inadequate infrastructure and limited marketing resources as continuing challenges for Nigerian SMEs using digital technologies. Consequently, the increasing availability of digital marketing tools creates an important question concerning whether and to what extent their use translates into actual sales performance.

A second problem concerns the varying effectiveness of individual digital marketing strategies. SMEs may use social media platforms, email marketing, search engine marketing, mobile marketing, online advertising and content marketing, but the outcomes of these strategies may differ. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) found that several forms of digital marketing jointly had a significant positive influence on SME performance in Nigeria, suggesting that an integrated digital marketing approach can produce benefits. However, Lawal and Adejuwon (2023), in their study of South-West Nigerian SMEs, found that some dimensions of social media marketing, particularly social interaction and customization, were statistically significant predictors of sales growth, while branded entertainment, customer engagement and electronic word-of-mouth were not individually significant in their model. This variation indicates that digital marketing cannot simply be treated as a single activity with a uniform outcome. There is therefore a need to identify which strategies are associated with sales performance and to examine their effects within the specific context of SMEs in Ikeja.

Another problem is the limited location-specific evidence concerning digital marketing and sales performance among SMEs in Ikeja. Although existing Nigerian studies provide useful evidence, some have examined SME performance generally rather than sales performance specifically, while others have focused on broader geographical areas such as South-West Nigeria. Fadeyi et al. (2026) conducted a study specifically in Ikeja LGA and found that social media content quality and budget allocation were positively and significantly associated with SME performance. While this provides important evidence from the study area, performance is a broader concept that can include profitability, market share, customer growth and other organisational outcomes. Similarly, Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) examined sales growth among SMEs across South-West Nigeria, but their study did not focus specifically on Ikeja. Thus, there remains a contextual and empirical gap concerning the influence of a broader set of digital marketing strategies on the sales performance of selected SMEs operating within Ikeja, Lagos State.

The central problem addressed by this study is therefore the insufficient empirical evidence on the extent to which digital marketing strategies influence the sales performance of SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State. The growing adoption of digital platforms creates opportunities for SMEs to expand customer reach, improve communication, strengthen brand visibility and generate sales, but the actual effectiveness of these strategies may depend on the type of digital marketing employed, the quality of content, the level of customer engagement, the firm’s digital capabilities and the resources allocated to online marketing. Evidence from Nigeria indicates that digital marketing can improve SME performance, while more specific studies indicate that the effects of individual digital marketing dimensions may differ (Ilesanmi & Oyedepo, 2023; Lawal & Adejuwon, 2023; Fadeyi et al., 2026). It is therefore necessary to empirically examine the effect of selected digital marketing strategies on sales performance among SMEs in Ikeja. The findings of such a study can provide evidence on whether digital marketing strategies are associated with sales growth, customer acquisition, market reach and related sales outcomes among SMEs operating in the study area.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the effect of digital marketing strategies on the sales performance of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ikeja, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to SME owners and managers because it will provide empirical evidence concerning the relationship between digital marketing activities and sales performance. The findings may assist SME owners in understanding the digital strategies that are associated with customer acquisition, sales growth and market expansion.

The study will be useful to marketing managers and digital marketing practitioners because it will provide evidence concerning the contribution of social media marketing, search engine marketing and content marketing to SME sales performance. This may assist practitioners in designing digital campaigns that are more closely connected with measurable business outcomes.

The study will also be beneficial to SMEDAN and other government agencies responsible for SME development. Evidence from the study may contribute to the design of digital-skills training, entrepreneurship programmes and market-access interventions for SMEs. This is particularly relevant because the SMEDAN/NBS survey identified technology and access to markets among the challenges facing Nigerian enterprises (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021).

The study will be useful to policymakers and business-support institutions because it may provide evidence concerning the role of digital technologies in improving the competitiveness of SMEs. Such information may support policies and programmes aimed at improving digital literacy, internet access, online business capabilities and digital entrepreneurship.

Finally, the study will contribute to the academic literature on digital marketing, entrepreneurship and SME performance. By focusing specifically on selected SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State, it will provide location-specific evidence that may be useful to future researchers examining digital marketing and business performance in Lagos State and other Nigerian commercial centres.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on the effect of digital marketing strategies on the sales performance of selected Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The geographical scope will be restricted to selected SMEs operating within Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State.
