Project – Digital Marketing Strategies and Customer Loyalty among Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Study of Selected Businesses in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute an important component of modern economies because they contribute to employment creation, income generation, entrepreneurship, innovation and the distribution of goods and services. In developing economies such as Nigeria, SMEs operate across sectors including retail, manufacturing, hospitality, transportation, professional services, fashion, food production and other consumer-oriented activities. Their survival, however, depends substantially on their ability to attract customers, satisfy their needs and maintain relationships that encourage repeat patronage. In a competitive marketplace, attracting a customer once is different from retaining that customer over time, making customer loyalty an important consideration for business sustainability. The emergence of digital technologies has further transformed how SMEs communicate with customers, promote their offerings and manage relationships. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) explain that digital marketing encompasses strategic use of digital channels and technologies, including social media, search, content marketing, email and data-driven approaches, to communicate with customers and create value. Thus, digital marketing has become increasingly relevant to SMEs seeking to remain visible and competitive in changing markets.
Digital marketing refers broadly to the use of digital technologies and online channels to communicate marketing messages, promote products and services, interact with customers and achieve organisational marketing objectives. Unlike traditional marketing, digital marketing enables businesses to communicate with customers through multiple interactive channels and to obtain feedback from customers in relatively immediate ways. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) identify social media marketing, search engine marketing, content marketing, email marketing, conversion optimisation and marketing automation among important areas of contemporary digital marketing practice. These tools allow businesses to move beyond one-way promotional communication toward more interactive forms of customer engagement. For SMEs, such strategies can be particularly relevant because digital platforms may provide comparatively flexible ways of reaching target customers, communicating product information and maintaining customer relationships. Consequently, the strategic adoption of digital marketing may influence not only awareness and sales but also the quality and continuity of relationships between businesses and their customers.
Customer loyalty is another important concept in contemporary marketing because long-term business sustainability depends partly on the willingness of customers to continue patronising a business, recommend it to others and maintain favourable attitudes toward its products or services. Customer loyalty extends beyond a single purchase and may involve repeat purchasing, preference, commitment, positive word-of-mouth and resistance to competing offers. Relationship marketing literature emphasises the importance of developing continuing relationships with customers rather than treating each transaction as an isolated exchange. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) specifically identify digital relationship marketing as an important component of digital marketing strategy, highlighting the use of digital platforms to manage customer relationships and deliver relevant experiences. Recent empirical evidence from Nigerian SMEs also indicates that digital relationship marketing is associated with customer loyalty. A 2025 study involving SMEs in Nigeria reported a moderately positive and statistically significant relationship between digital relationship marketing and customer loyalty, while identifying personalised communication and social media engagement as relevant strategies.
The relationship between digital marketing strategies and customer loyalty can be explained through the ability of digital platforms to facilitate communication, personalisation, engagement and responsiveness. Social media allows businesses to respond to customer enquiries, publish relevant content, receive complaints and feedback, announce promotions and maintain ongoing interaction with consumers. Content marketing can provide customers with useful information and educational material rather than relying exclusively on direct sales messages. Email and mobile marketing can facilitate personalised communication, while online advertising can help businesses reach specific customer segments. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) emphasise the strategic importance of integrating different digital channels and using data to improve customer experiences. When customers perceive that a business communicates effectively, responds to their needs and provides relevant information, digital marketing activities may contribute to relationship development and continued patronage. However, the effectiveness of such strategies depends on how appropriately they are implemented and whether digital communication is supported by satisfactory products and customer service.
The Nigerian SME environment makes the study of digital marketing particularly relevant because businesses operate in an increasingly competitive and digitally connected marketplace. Recent research on SMEs in Lagos State indicates substantial awareness and adoption of digital marketing strategies, with social media, mobile marketing and SMS identified among the more widely used digital tools. The same study reported that SMEs also use email marketing and other digital communication methods, although adoption varies across specific technologies (Ayokanmi, 2025). Research published in 2026 similarly identifies social media marketing and e-commerce implementation as important digital practices among Nigerian SMEs while noting continuing challenges associated with digital skills, infrastructure and limited marketing resources (Lawal et al., 2026). These findings suggest that Nigerian SMEs are increasingly incorporating digital channels into their marketing activities, but the existence of adoption does not necessarily demonstrate that such strategies produce loyal customers. It is therefore necessary to examine the relationship between the strategies businesses employ and the customer loyalty outcomes associated with them.
The importance of this issue is particularly evident in Lagos State, which represents a highly active commercial environment with a large number of small businesses serving diverse consumer groups. SMEs operating within Lagos compete not only with businesses in their immediate physical locations but also with businesses that use online platforms to reach customers across geographical boundaries. Consequently, customers can compare products, prices, reviews, promotions and service experiences through digital platforms before deciding where to purchase. Recent research conducted among SMEs in Lagos State found high adoption of digital marketing, with social media leading other digital tools, indicating the growing importance of digital channels within the state’s SME sector (Adeniyi et al., 2024). Another recent Nigerian study involving customers of SMEs operating in Lagos State found that digital relationship marketing and social media engagement are relevant to customer loyalty (Ogunwole, 2026). These findings make Lagos an appropriate context for investigating how digital marketing strategies relate to customer loyalty among smaller businesses.
Alimosho Local Government Area provides a particularly relevant context for the study because SMEs operating within the area serve consumers in a highly populated urban environment with diverse commercial activities and consumer needs. Businesses in the area increasingly have opportunities to use social media platforms, mobile communication, online advertising, digital content, customer databases and other digital tools to attract and retain customers. However, the availability of these tools does not guarantee effective marketing outcomes. Businesses may differ in their ability to create useful content, respond to customers, personalise communication, maintain online trust and convert digital interactions into repeat patronage. Existing studies provide evidence of digital marketing adoption and its relationship with customer loyalty among SMEs in Lagos State, but evidence specifically focused on selected businesses in Alimosho Local Government Area remains limited. Therefore, this study seeks to examine Digital Marketing Strategies and Customer Loyalty among Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Study of Selected Businesses in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, with emphasis on how strategies such as social media marketing, content marketing, email/mobile marketing and online promotional activities relate to customer loyalty.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing competition among SMEs has made customer retention an important business concern. Many small businesses invest resources in attracting new customers through advertising and promotional activities, but attracting customers does not necessarily mean that those customers will return or recommend the business to others. Digital platforms have created additional opportunities for SMEs to maintain customer relationships, yet businesses must determine which digital strategies are capable of producing meaningful and sustained customer engagement. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) emphasise that digital marketing involves more than simply having an online presence; it requires strategic management of digital channels, customer experiences, communication and performance. The problem, therefore, is that although SMEs increasingly use digital marketing tools, the extent to which these tools contribute to customer loyalty remains an important empirical question.
A second problem concerns differences in the effectiveness of specific digital marketing strategies. SMEs may use social media, content marketing, email, mobile messaging, online advertising and other digital tools, but the mere use of these platforms does not establish that customers will become loyal. Poor-quality content, excessive promotional messages, slow responses to enquiries, inconsistent online communication and failure to meet customer expectations may weaken rather than strengthen customer relationships. Recent research on Nigerian SMEs indicates that digital relationship marketing can have a positive relationship with customer loyalty, while social media engagement and personalised communication are among the strategies associated with customer relationship outcomes (Ogunwole, 2026). However, the effectiveness of digital strategies may differ according to business type, target market, implementation quality and customer expectations. It is therefore necessary to examine the particular strategies being used by selected SMEs and their relationship with customer loyalty rather than treating all digital marketing activities as equally effective.
Another problem is that Nigerian SMEs continue to encounter practical barriers to effective digital marketing. Recent evidence indicates that Nigerian businesses may face challenges involving digital skills, inadequate infrastructure and limited marketing resources, even as social media and other digital channels become increasingly important to SME operations (Lawal et al., 2026). Similarly, research on SMEs in Lagos State has identified varying levels of adoption across different digital marketing tools, with some technologies used more extensively than others (Ayokanmi, 2025). Such differences may affect the ability of businesses to maintain consistent digital communication and provide effective customer experiences. Consequently, it cannot be assumed that the widespread availability of digital platforms automatically translates into customer loyalty. The issue requires investigation at the level of actual business practices and customer responses.
The central problem addressed by this study is the limited empirical evidence specifically concerning the relationship between digital marketing strategies and customer loyalty among selected SMEs in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. Although existing studies have examined digital marketing adoption in Lagos and digital relationship marketing among Nigerian SMEs, geographical and contextual differences mean that findings from broader populations cannot automatically be assumed to represent businesses operating in Alimosho. Furthermore, some existing studies focus primarily on digital marketing adoption or general business performance rather than customer loyalty as a distinct outcome. Recent evidence from Lagos indicates that digital relationship marketing is associated with customer loyalty, while broader Nigerian research has linked social media marketing with SME performance (Ogunwole, 2026; Lawal et al., 2026). Therefore, this study seeks to provide specific empirical evidence on whether and how digital marketing strategies relate to customer loyalty among selected businesses in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State.
