Project – The Influence of Social Media Prophetic Messages on Spiritual Discernment among Christian Youths: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The Christian faith places considerable emphasis on the ability of believers to distinguish truth from error and to evaluate spiritual teachings in the light of biblical principles. Spiritual discernment may be understood as the capacity of a believer to examine, interpret and judge spiritual claims, teachings and experiences according to the truth of Scripture and the character of Christian faith. The New Testament repeatedly encourages Christians to test spiritual claims rather than accept every claim uncritically. First John 4:1 instructs believers to “test the spirits,” while Acts 17:11 presents the Bereans as examining the Scriptures to determine whether what they were taught was true. This biblical emphasis makes discernment particularly important in an environment where Christians are exposed to numerous religious voices and competing spiritual claims. For Pentecostal youths, who are often actively involved in both church-based and digital religious activities, the ability to distinguish biblically grounded prophetic messages from questionable or misleading claims is therefore an important aspect of Christian maturity. The increasing movement of Christian communication into digital spaces has consequently created a new context in which the traditional practice of spiritual discernment must be exercised.

The development of social media has significantly transformed the way information is produced, distributed and consumed, including religious information. Platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp allow individuals and religious organizations to communicate with large audiences without depending exclusively on conventional church structures or traditional mass media. Digital religion scholarship demonstrates that religious practices can increasingly occur through interactions between online and offline environments, creating new forms of religious communication, community and participation (Campbell, 2025). Hutchings (2017) similarly observes that online Christian communities can generate new forms of worship, leadership, interaction and religious influence. Consequently, social media is no longer merely an entertainment or communication tool for young people; it has become an important environment in which religious identities, beliefs and practices can be encountered, discussed and negotiated.

In Nigeria, the growth of digital religious communication is particularly significant because of the prominent role of Pentecostal Christianity in the country’s religious landscape. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have increasingly adopted information and communication technologies as instruments for evangelism, church growth, spiritual communication and interaction with members. Omotayo (2017), in a study of Pentecostal churches in Ibadan, found that a majority of the churches examined had adopted information and communication technologies, particularly for gospel propagation, and that these technologies had implications for church growth and the spiritual lives of members. Chiluwa (2012) similarly documented the emergence of Internet-based Christian worship in Nigeria and identified the development of what may be described as an “Internet church,” where Christian messages, fellowship and claims of spiritual experiences are communicated digitally. These developments indicate that religious communication in Nigeria has expanded beyond the physical congregation into digital spaces where young Christians can encounter religious personalities and teachings from different locations and denominations.

The growing use of social media by Nigerian Pentecostal churches has particular implications for youths because young people constitute an important audience for digital religious communication. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) found that Nigerian Pentecostal churches increasingly use mass and online media to reach young people, while the Internet provides an environment in which youths can encounter religious programmes and spiritual content beyond the boundaries of their local congregations. The authors further highlight the commercialization of religious communication and the promotion of spiritual products through Internet-based platforms. This development provides opportunities for evangelism, Christian education, encouragement and wider access to religious resources, but it can also expose youths to numerous competing religious messages. A young Christian may therefore receive teachings from his or her local pastor while simultaneously following several prophets, evangelists and Christian influencers from different churches and theological backgrounds. The resulting diversity of religious voices makes spiritual discernment increasingly necessary because popularity, visibility and digital influence do not necessarily establish the biblical authenticity of a religious message.

One area of digital religious communication that deserves particular attention is the circulation of prophetic messages. Prophecy has an important place within Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, where prophetic ministry may involve messages of encouragement, warning, direction, revelation, prayer, healing, prediction and declarations concerning individuals or communities. Social media has provided individuals who identify themselves as prophets or prophetic ministers with opportunities to distribute such messages directly to large audiences. Unlike the traditional setting in which a prophetic message may be communicated within a congregation under some form of pastoral or denominational accountability, social media enables prophetic messages to circulate across geographical, denominational and institutional boundaries. Chiluwa (2012) observed that Nigerian Internet-based Christian activities included widespread claims of spiritual experiences and miracles, while Hutchings (2017) noted that digital religious environments can produce new forms of religious leadership and influence. The implication is that social media can broaden access to prophetic communication while simultaneously making the evaluation of prophetic authority more complex.

The issue becomes more important when the characteristics of social media are considered. Social media platforms encourage rapid sharing, short-form content, emotional engagement, comments, likes, followers, reposts and algorithm-driven recommendations. Consequently, a prophetic message may become widely known because it is emotionally powerful, sensational or highly engaging rather than because it has been carefully evaluated for biblical accuracy. A message predicting personal success, marriage, financial breakthrough, healing, deliverance or divine intervention may receive considerable attention from young Christians because of its emotional and personal appeal. The repeated exposure to such messages may influence how youths understand God’s will, spiritual authority, prophecy and Christian decision-making. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) point to the growing importance of online media in reaching Nigerian Pentecostal youths, while recent research on social media and Nigerian youth evangelisation has raised concerns about the circulation of religious misinformation and its potential implications for faith formation (Aduloju, 2026). This suggests that the digital environment can provide valuable spiritual resources while also creating circumstances in which questionable religious information can spread rapidly.

Spiritual discernment is therefore particularly important for Pentecostal youths who regularly consume prophetic content online. The Bible does not encourage believers to accept every spiritual claim without examination; rather, Christians are expected to test teachings and spiritual experiences against established Christian truth. First Thessalonians 5:20–21 instructs believers not to despise prophecies but to test everything and hold firmly to what is good. Similarly, 1 Corinthians 14:29 presents a model in which prophetic utterances are subject to evaluation. These biblical principles suggest that accepting prophecy and exercising discernment are not contradictory practices. Instead, genuine Christian engagement with prophetic messages requires believers to evaluate the content, source, purpose and implications of the message. In a social-media environment where young people can encounter numerous prophetic personalities without direct personal contact or established accountability structures, these principles become especially relevant to Christian formation.

The situation is particularly worthy of investigation in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State because Ikeja is situated within one of Nigeria’s most urbanized and technologically active metropolitan environments. Pentecostal churches operating in such an environment function within a society where religious participation and digital communication increasingly overlap. Pentecostal youths may attend physical church services, participate in youth fellowships and Bible studies, while also consuming sermons, prophetic declarations, livestreams and short videos through their mobile devices. The coexistence of these physical and digital religious environments means that the local church is no longer necessarily the only source of religious information available to young Christians. Campbell (2025) argues that contemporary religious life increasingly involves interconnected online and offline spiritual practices, while Omotayo (2017) demonstrates that Nigerian Pentecostal churches have already incorporated digital technologies into their religious activities. Ikeja therefore provides a relevant context for examining how youths navigate the relationship between local church teaching and prophetic content encountered through social media.

The growing availability of social media prophetic messages also raises questions concerning religious authority and the formation of Christian beliefs among youths. In traditional Pentecostal settings, pastoral and prophetic authority may be shaped by church structures, theological training, denominational affiliation, personal relationships, congregational accountability and long-term observation of a minister’s character and teachings. On social media, however, authority can be constructed through visibility, followers, testimonials, attractive presentation, perceived miracles, viral videos and audience engagement. Hutchings (2017) explains that digital environments can generate new forms of religious leadership and community, while Chiluwa (2012) identifies both opportunities and dangers associated with online Christian worship in Nigeria. This changing pattern of religious authority may make it difficult for some young Christians to distinguish between spiritual credibility and digital popularity. The problem is therefore not that social media prophetic messages are necessarily harmful, but that their increasing influence requires users to possess sufficient biblical knowledge and spiritual maturity to evaluate them responsibly.

Furthermore, exposure to prophetic messages may influence the way youths make personal and spiritual decisions. Some young Christians may use prophetic declarations to interpret circumstances concerning education, relationships, employment, finances, health and family matters. Where prophetic messages are treated as unquestionable divine instructions, there is a possibility that personal judgment, Scripture, pastoral counsel and responsible decision-making may receive less attention. On the other hand, prophetic messages that are biblically grounded and responsibly communicated may encourage prayer, hope, faith, repentance and spiritual growth. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) show that online religious media have become an important means through which Pentecostal churches engage Nigerian youths, while Chiluwa (2012) demonstrates that digital religious environments can create both spiritual opportunities and vulnerabilities. The influence of social media prophetic messages should therefore be examined empirically rather than assumed to be entirely positive or negative.

Against this background, there is a need to examine how Pentecostal youths respond to prophetic messages encountered through social media and the extent to which such messages relate to their spiritual discernment. Existing studies have examined digital religion, online Christian worship, the adoption of ICT by Pentecostal churches and the use of mass media to reach Nigerian youths (Chiluwa, 2012; Omotayo, 2017; Hutchings, 2017; Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024). However, relatively limited attention has been directed specifically toward the relationship between social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths within a defined urban setting such as Ikeja LGA. The present study therefore seeks to investigate The Influence of Social Media Prophetic Messages on Spiritual Discernment among Christian Youths: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State. The study is expected to provide evidence that can help churches, pastors, youth leaders and Christian educators understand how young Christians interact with prophetic content in the digital environment and how biblical discernment can be strengthened.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid expansion of social media has fundamentally changed the environment in which Christian youths receive religious information and spiritual instruction. Previously, young Christians were more likely to depend primarily on pastors, youth leaders, Bible study teachers, Sunday school, Christian fellowship groups and personal Bible study for regular spiritual guidance. Today, a Pentecostal youth can follow numerous pastors, prophets, evangelists and Christian content creators simultaneously through YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp. Nigerian research confirms that Pentecostal churches increasingly use digital and mass media to reach young people (Omotayo, 2017; Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024). While this development can expand access to Christian teachings, it also exposes youths to a large volume of prophetic and religious messages whose biblical quality, theological orientation and authenticity may differ substantially. The problem is therefore whether young Christians are sufficiently equipped to evaluate these messages rather than accepting them merely because they are popular or emotionally compelling.

A second problem concerns the increasing visibility of people who present themselves as prophets or prophetic ministers on social media. Digital platforms enable such individuals to communicate prophetic declarations, predictions, warnings, prayers, revelations, healing claims and spiritual instructions directly to large audiences without necessarily having an established relationship with the audience or being subject to the same level of accountability that may exist within a local church. Chiluwa (2012) identified both the opportunities and dangers associated with online Christian worship in Nigeria, including the possibility of deception and divided loyalty, while Hutchings (2017) demonstrated that online Christian environments can create new forms of religious leadership and influence. The concern is therefore whether Pentecostal youths can distinguish between biblically grounded prophetic ministry and messages that may be influenced by sensationalism, commercialization, personal interests or inadequate theological understanding. Where youths accept online prophetic claims without adequate evaluation, their understanding of Christian doctrine and spiritual authority may be affected.

A third problem relates to the possible influence of repeated exposure to prophetic messages on the spiritual discernment of Christian youths. Social media algorithms can repeatedly present users with content similar to what they have previously watched, liked, commented on or shared. Consequently, a youth who frequently consumes prophetic declarations may encounter an increasingly concentrated stream of similar messages, which may gradually shape expectations concerning prophecy, divine guidance, miracles, relationships, prosperity, healing and personal destiny. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) note the significant role of online media in reaching Nigerian Pentecostal youths and also identify the commercialization of religious content within the Internet environment. More recent Nigerian research has similarly highlighted concerns about misinformation within digital religious communication and its implications for young people’s understanding of faith (Aduloju, 2026). The problem is that there is insufficient empirical evidence showing whether frequent exposure to social media prophetic messages strengthens the ability of Pentecostal youths to test spiritual claims or instead encourages uncritical acceptance of online religious authority.

A fourth problem is the limited empirical evidence specifically addressing the influence of social media prophetic messages on spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State. Existing studies have established that Nigerian Pentecostal churches use information and communication technologies for evangelism and church development (Omotayo, 2017), that Internet-based Christianity has created new forms of online religious participation in Nigeria (Chiluwa, 2012), and that Pentecostal churches increasingly use media to engage young people (Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024). However, these studies do not adequately establish how Pentecostal youths in Ikeja encounter prophetic messages through social media, the types of messages they commonly receive, the extent to which such messages influence their spiritual thinking, or their ability to test those messages against biblical principles. This gap provides the basis for the present study, which seeks to generate empirical evidence on the influence of social media prophetic messages on spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social media prophetic messages on spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. examine the extent to which Christian youths are exposed to prophetic messages through social media in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State;
  2. identify the major types of prophetic messages encountered by Christian youths through social media in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State;
  3. assess the influence of social media prophetic messages on spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State; and
  4. determine the relationship between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. To what extent are Christian youths exposed to prophetic messages through social media in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State?
  2. What are the major types of prophetic messages encountered by Christian youths through social media in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State?
  3. To what extent do social media prophetic messages influence spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State?
  4. What relationship exists between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Christian youths because it will increase their awareness of the need to evaluate prophetic messages encountered on social media carefully. The findings may encourage youths to compare prophetic claims with Scripture and to avoid accepting messages merely because they are delivered by popular or highly followed religious personalities. The study may also encourage young Christians to develop a more balanced approach to digital religious content by combining online engagement with personal Bible study, prayer and participation in responsible Christian fellowship.

The study will also be significant to pastors and Pentecostal church leaders. The findings may provide information concerning the types of prophetic messages being consumed by youths outside their local congregations. This information may assist church leaders in developing appropriate biblical teaching, youth discipleship programmes and digital ministry strategies that address questions arising from social media prophetic content. Since Nigerian Pentecostal churches increasingly employ communication technologies for religious purposes, understanding youths’ online experiences may help church leaders respond more effectively to the changing religious environment (Omotayo, 2017; Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024).

The study will be useful to youth pastors and Christian educators because it may identify areas in which youths require greater teaching concerning prophecy, biblical interpretation and spiritual discernment. The findings may assist youth ministries in developing Bible-based programmes that teach young Christians how to evaluate religious claims, identify questionable teachings and understand the proper place of prophecy within Christian life. Such education is important because digital religious environments expose youths to religious personalities and teachings beyond the immediate supervision of their local churches (Chiluwa, 2012; Hutchings, 2017).

The study will also be relevant to parents and guardians of Christian youths. Parents increasingly have to understand the influence of digital media on the beliefs, attitudes and decisions of young people. Findings from the study may help parents appreciate the kinds of spiritual content their children encounter online and encourage constructive conversations about prophetic messages, biblical truth and Christian decision-making. Rather than treating social media entirely as a negative influence, parents may use the findings to encourage responsible and critically informed Christian media consumption.

The study will be beneficial to Pentecostal churches in Ikeja LGA because it may provide empirical information that can support the development of digital discipleship and media-literacy initiatives. Churches may use the findings to improve their own social media presence and provide credible, accessible and biblically grounded Christian content for young people. The study may also help churches understand the extent to which external prophetic voices compete with local church teachings in shaping the spiritual lives of youths.

The study will contribute to Christian theological and religious studies scholarship by examining spiritual discernment within the contemporary context of social media prophetic communication. Much of the discussion surrounding prophecy, Pentecostalism and spiritual discernment has traditionally focused on physical congregations and conventional forms of religious authority. The present study extends the discussion into the digital environment, where prophetic messages can cross denominational and geographical boundaries with considerable speed. In this respect, the study responds to the broader scholarly concern with the relationship between religion, media and digital culture (Campbell, 2025; Hutchings, 2017).

Finally, the study will be useful to future researchers who may wish to investigate related issues such as digital Christianity, online prophetic ministry, religious misinformation, Pentecostal youth culture, Christian media literacy, digital discipleship and religious authority in Nigeria. The findings may serve as a reference point for comparative studies involving other local government areas, denominations, age groups or religious traditions.
