Project – The Influence of Pentecostal Teachings on the Moral Development of Christian Youths in Contemporary Nigerian Society: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Moral development is an important aspect of human growth because it involves the formation of values, attitudes, principles, and behavioural patterns that guide individuals in distinguishing right from wrong and making responsible decisions. In contemporary society, moral development is reflected in qualities such as honesty, integrity, respect, self-discipline, compassion, accountability, justice, and responsibility towards others. For young people, these qualities are particularly important because adolescence and early adulthood are periods during which personal identity, social relationships, beliefs, and behavioural patterns continue to develop. Families, educational institutions, religious organisations, peer groups, and the media all contribute to this process. Within Christianity, moral development is closely connected with spiritual formation, discipleship, obedience to biblical teachings, and the practical expression of Christian values in everyday life. The Bible presents moral transformation as an essential feature of Christian living, particularly through the cultivation of love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23, New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition [NRSVue], 2021). Similarly, Ojediran (2026), in a review of Christian ethics and youth morality in Nigeria, identifies values education, character formation, family involvement, and religious guidance as relevant considerations in addressing ethical challenges among young people. These perspectives establish the importance of examining how religious teachings contribute to the moral development of Christian youths in contemporary Nigerian society.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Moral development is an important concern in contemporary Nigerian society because young people are expected to develop the values and attitudes necessary for responsible personal conduct, healthy relationships, and constructive participation in society. Christian institutions, including Pentecostal churches, seek to contribute to this process through biblical preaching, discipleship, counselling, prayer, mentorship, and youth programmes. These activities commonly emphasise honesty, self-discipline, respect, sexual responsibility, compassion, and accountability. However, the existence of regular religious teaching does not necessarily establish that young people consistently practise the values being taught. Ojediran (2026) identifies ethical challenges among Nigerian youths and discusses the potential contribution of Christian ethics to character formation and responsible decision-making. Similarly, Omonijo et al. (2016) raise concerns about the relationship between the expansion of churches and moral conduct in Nigeria. The problem, therefore, is whether Pentecostal teachings meaningfully influence the moral development and everyday behaviour of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
A further concern is the extent to which Pentecostal teachings address the actual moral challenges confronting young people. Christian youths may encounter peer pressure, academic dishonesty, substance misuse, unhealthy relationships, online misconduct, financial pressures, and conflicting social expectations. Although Pentecostal churches may teach biblical principles intended to guide young people through these situations, the effectiveness of such teachings may depend on whether they are connected to practical experiences and supported by consistent guidance. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) examine the use of mass media by Pentecostal churches to reach young people in Nigeria, highlighting the relevance of contemporary communication channels to youth religious engagement. However, access to religious messages through media does not necessarily demonstrate that those messages translate into sustained moral change. It is therefore necessary to examine the teachings delivered to youths, how relevant they consider those teachings to their everyday experiences, and the extent to which the teachings help them make responsible moral decisions.
Another issue concerns the possible gap between religious identity and practical conduct. Some young people may participate actively in church services, fellowships, and prayer programmes while experiencing difficulties maintaining the moral standards promoted by their churches in school, at home, online, or among their peers. Sadiki and Khosa (2026) discuss the tension between Pentecostal youth identity within church environments and social expectations outside them, raising questions about moral integrity and the practical role of pastoral guidance. Such tensions indicate the need to examine not only the content of Pentecostal teachings but also the roles of mentorship, discipleship, peer relationships, family support, and church leadership in encouraging their application. Without examining these factors, it may be difficult to understand why some youths appear to embrace Christian moral principles while others struggle to apply them consistently.
Although existing literature discusses Pentecostalism, Christian ethics, religious media, and youth formation, the findings from other Nigerian contexts do not automatically establish the influence of Pentecostal teachings on Christian youths in Owerri Municipal Council. There is a need for local evidence concerning the moral values emphasised in selected Pentecostal churches, the perceived influence of those teachings on youth behaviour, and the challenges that may limit their practical application. Without such evidence, recommendations for strengthening youth discipleship and moral education may not adequately reflect the experiences of the churches and young people concerned. This study therefore seeks to investigate the influence of Pentecostal teachings on the moral development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State, drawing on the wider discussions of Christian ethics and Pentecostal youth formation presented by Ojediran (2026) and Sadiki and Khosa (2026).

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between exposure to Pentecostal teachings and the moral development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study may be beneficial to Christian youths, Pentecostal church leaders, youth pastors, parents, Christian educators, religious organisations, and future researchers.
Christian youths: The study may help Christian youths reflect on the relationship between religious teachings and everyday moral choices. It may encourage them to consider how biblical principles concerning honesty, self-control, respect, compassion, responsibility, and integrity can be applied in their personal relationships, educational activities, and social interactions.
Pentecostal church leaders: The findings may help pastors and church leaders evaluate the relevance and effectiveness of their teachings and youth programmes. They may use the results to strengthen discipleship, counselling, mentorship, and practical instruction on contemporary moral challenges.
Youth pastors and ministry coordinators: The study may provide information to guide the planning of youth fellowships, Bible study sessions, leadership development programmes, and mentoring activities. The findings may encourage youth ministers to connect biblical teaching with the situations young people encounter at school, at home, online, and among their peers.
Parents and guardians: The study may help parents understand how church teachings and family guidance can complement each other in supporting young people’s moral development. It may encourage greater cooperation between parents and church leaders in providing consistent guidance, setting appropriate expectations, and supporting responsible decision-making.
Christian Religious Studies educators: The findings may provide insights into the relationship between Christian ethical instruction and the moral challenges experienced by young people. Educators may use the results to develop discussions and learning activities that connect biblical principles with contemporary social situations.
Religious organisations: The study may provide information that helps Pentecostal denominations and other Christian organisations evaluate youth-development strategies. The findings may support efforts to promote ethical leadership, accountability, effective mentorship, and practical approaches to discipleship.
Future researchers: The study may serve as a reference for further research on Pentecostalism, youth ministry, Christian ethics, religious education, and moral development. It may also provide a basis for comparative studies involving different denominations, age groups, or locations.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of Pentecostal teachings on the moral development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
Geographically, the research will be conducted in selected Pentecostal churches within Owerri Municipal Council. The specific churches will be identified during the research planning process.
In terms of content, the study will examine the teachings and moral values promoted by the selected churches, including honesty, self-discipline, respect, compassion, sexual responsibility, accountability, and responsible decision-making. It will also examine youths’ perceptions of the influence of these teachings on their behaviour and the challenges that may affect their practical application.
The study will focus on Christian youths who participate in the selected churches’ activities. Pastors, youth leaders, or other church workers may also be included where their perspectives are necessary to understand the content and delivery of Pentecostal teachings. The study will not attempt to assess every aspect of Christian doctrine or determine the moral character of all Christian youths in Imo State.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter certain limitations.
First, the research will be restricted to selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council. Its findings may therefore not represent the experiences of all Pentecostal churches in Imo State or Nigeria.
Second, questions concerning moral behaviour may be sensitive. Some respondents may provide answers they consider socially or religiously acceptable rather than describing their experiences accurately. The researcher will explain the purpose of the study, protect respondents’ confidentiality, and encourage honest participation.
Third, differences in church doctrine, leadership styles, youth programmes, and teaching methods may affect the responses obtained from individual churches. These differences will be considered when analysing and interpreting the findings.
Finally, moral development is influenced by several factors, including family upbringing, peer relationships, education, socioeconomic conditions, personal beliefs, and media exposure. The study will focus on Pentecostal teachings while acknowledging that these other influences may also contribute to the moral development of Christian youths. If a descriptive survey design is used, findings should be interpreted primarily as evidence of reported relationships or perceived influence rather than definitive proof of causation.
