ABSTRACT
The research study was aimed at investigating the effect of gender difference on academic performance of chemistry students in some selected secondary schools of Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Some schools within Zaria were chosen, 100 students (50 males, 50 females) were randomly selected from each school making a total of 100 students in all. For the statistical analysis of the data, the mean performance of male students and the mean performance of the female students were calculated. The result showed that the male students performed better than female students in chemistry. The t-test was also used to see if there was any significant difference between the performance of male and female students. The results, showed that there was a significant different in their performance. Based on the analysis of the data, various suggestions and recommendations were made for the improvement of the performance of both sexes in chemistry generally. It is hope that findings from this study would be of help to educational administrations, chemistry teachers, students of chemistry, parents, government and other science as a whole in Zaria Local government area of Kaduna state.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is widely recognized as a vital instrument for national development and social transformation. It enables individuals to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for personal growth and societal advancement (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2014). Science education, particularly Chemistry, plays a crucial role in technological and economic development as it provides the foundation for fields such as medicine, engineering, agriculture, and industry (Ogunleye, 2009). Chemistry is therefore central to scientific literacy and the development of problem-solving abilities among students.
Despite the importance of Chemistry in the secondary school curriculum, students’ performance in the subject has remained a source of concern to educators, policymakers, and parents. Reports from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC, 2022) indicate persistent low performance in Chemistry, which has been attributed to several factors such as teaching methods, school environment, and students’ attitudes. Among these factors, gender difference has been a recurring theme in the discourse on academic performance (Okeke, 2008).
Gender refers to the social and cultural differences between males and females in terms of roles, responsibilities, and opportunities (UNESCO, 2018). In the context of education, gender disparity in performance has been observed in various subjects, especially in the sciences. Traditionally, male students have been perceived to perform better than their female counterparts in science-related disciplines due to socio-cultural expectations, stereotypes, and differential exposure to learning opportunities (Adesoji & Olatunbosun, 2008).
However, recent studies have challenged this stereotype, suggesting that with equal opportunities, female students can perform as well as, or even better than, male students in science subjects (Olatoye, 2010). Despite these emerging perspectives, the issue of gender disparity in Chemistry performance continues to generate interest, especially in developing contexts like Nigeria, where socio-cultural norms and educational practices may still favor one gender over the other (Ogunbiyi, 2013).
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the effect of gender difference on the academic performance of Chemistry students in selected secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The findings will contribute to understanding whether gender remains a significant determinant of academic success in Chemistry within the Nigerian secondary school context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Over the years, the academic performance of students in Chemistry at the secondary school level has been unsatisfactory, as reflected in public examination results (WAEC, 2022; NECO, 2021). This persistent underperformance has raised questions regarding the factors influencing students’ achievement in the subject. One recurring concern is whether gender differences significantly contribute to disparities in performance.
In Nigeria, several socio-cultural and environmental factors have contributed to unequal participation and achievement between male and female students in science subjects (Ezeudu & Obi, 2013). Female students are often discouraged from pursuing science-related disciplines due to traditional beliefs that science is more suitable for males. Consequently, such stereotypes may affect their confidence, interest, and academic performance in subjects like Chemistry (Umar, 2011).
Despite numerous interventions aimed at promoting gender equity in science education, reports still indicate a noticeable performance gap between male and female students in Chemistry (Ogunleye, 2009; WAEC, 2022). This situation necessitates an empirical investigation into whether gender truly influences academic performance in Chemistry among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of gender difference on the academic performance of Chemistry students in selected secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The specific objectives are to:
- Compare the academic performance of male and female students in Chemistry.
- Determine whether gender difference significantly affects students’ academic achievement in Chemistry.
- Identify possible factors contributing to gender differences in Chemistry performance.
- Suggest measures to bridge any observed performance gap between male and female students in Chemistry.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following research questions:
- Is there a difference between the academic performance of male and female students in Chemistry?
- Does gender difference significantly influence students’ achievement in Chemistry?
- What factors contribute to gender differences in Chemistry performance among students?
- What measures can be adopted to improve both male and female students’ performance in Chemistry?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
To guide the study, the following hypothesis will be tested:
H₀₁: There is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female students in Chemistry in selected secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several respects. First, it will provide empirical evidence on the influence of gender difference on Chemistry performance, thereby contributing to existing literature on gender and science education.
The findings will assist teachers in adopting gender-sensitive instructional strategies to enhance equal learning opportunities. Educational administrators and policymakers may also utilize the results to design interventions that promote gender equity in science subjects.
Furthermore, parents and guidance counselors will gain insights into how to encourage both male and female students toward improved performance in Chemistry and related disciplines. Lastly, the study will serve as a reference material for future researchers investigating gender-related academic issues in science education.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on investigating the effect of gender difference on the academic performance of Chemistry students in selected secondary schools within Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The population includes senior secondary school students (SS2 and SS3) offering Chemistry. The study emphasizes comparative performance analysis between male and female students and does not cover other subjects outside Chemistry.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
