CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1  Introduction

Automated Teller Machine (ATM) are device used by bank customers to process account transactions typically a user insert into the ATM. A special plastic card that encoded with information on a magnetic strip. The strip contains an identification code that is transmitted to the bank central computer device for converting digital and analogue signal especially to allow a computer to connect to telephone line to prevent unauthorized transaction a personal identification number (PIN) must also be used by the user using a keypad the computer then permit the ATM to compete the transaction most machine can dispense cash transfer funds and provide information on account balance bank have formed co-operative nation wide networks so that a customer of one bank can use an ATM of another bank for cash access by extension all commercial can be enable depositors to withdraw cash at more convenient time and places during banking hours at the branches in addition by automating services that were previously completed manually but now days we are using some depositors of other bank access their bank account through a banks ATM machine (Andrews, 2003) banks have come the principal developer of ATM the reason for these is they want to increase their market share although due to the prevalence of ATMs it is not likely to be the primary means by which ATM increase profitability for most of a transaction perform at an ATM is potentially less than the cost of a transaction conducted from a teller as ATM are capable of handling more transaction per unit of time than are tellers (Adeoti,1967).this project is aimed of to improve the ATM machine for the Zenith Bank

• Statement Of The Problem

Over the years customers have been making transaction at Zenith Bank using ATM by allowing them to withdraw money at any times as well as checking  balance, hence it reduce the pressure on both customers and personnel or staff. Yet there are issues associated with ATM transaction in that the machine use English only and a large proposition of customers felt uncomfortable unsecured as they neither read English nor French there for cannot operate the ATM using English Language and this led for asking third party to help thus the customers is

associated with the number of problem such as theft. Also in our context ATM is not liable because your withdrawal transaction can be completed without dispensing the cash and despite being in host you must wait for some hours for it to be reverse before you withdraw it again. Also ATM some time retained your ATM card for this reason the system need to be improve in such a way that it will eliminate these problem as well as reduce the queue pressure as well as time spent in the bank

• Aim And Objectives Of The Study

The aims of this project work is to design and implementation functional and professional software for Zenith Bank plc. the project is aimed at achieving the following objective.

1. To design the system that will be used in Hausa and English
2. To design an easy to use interface
3. To design a system that will not debit without dispensing cash
4. To identify various fraud and security threats associated with the use of ATM

1. To evaluate the users opinion on ATM fraud and how offender robs the victim of his/her ATM card, gets the PIN and then uses the card.
   • Significant Of The Study

Automated teller machine plays a vital role in the banking sector we can say it performed banking by which customers can access their funds twenty fore hours (24)hours a day and seven days a week and also do other transaction on their account all these can be done without the use of teller.

• Scope And Limitation Of The Study

The research work is intended to cover Automated teller machine (ATM) transaction such as withdrawal inquiry change pin, transfer funds airtime recharge and how it works it is part of the project work to add more languages such as Hausa and to eliminate dispense without cash and will well defined interface in terms of the color front size and easy to used. This research is limited only on the software problems of the ATM machine not with hardware problems.

• Definition Of The Terms

1. ATM (Automated Teller Machine) this is a computer with some resources added to it that is able to performed some transaction with a customer such withdrawal deposit transfer and balance enquiry
2. ATM CARD this is a small rectangular plastic object that authorized access to its user to his /her account on the ATM machine
3. CAMERA a pieces of equipment for taking photograph the ATM camera takes photograph and keep them for record purpose
4. CASH DISPENCER this is the component in the machine that is capable of dispensing out cash for a appropriate transaction
5. CARD NUMBER this is a long sequence of number on the ATM card the Card number determined the account that the card can be access as the card being linked to the customer account
6. CASH JAM when note gum themselves together and the context cannot separate it and count the machine cannot dispense such note is called cash jam.
7. MAGNETIC STRIP this is the mental portion of the ATM card that carries all the circulating of the card also called the chip.
