full Project – Combined Influence of Family Background and School Technology Environment on Students’ Academic Achievement in Urban Secondary Schools in Ikeja
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education plays a crucial role in the socio-economic and technological development of any nation. In Nigeria, the quality of education and students’ academic achievement have remained major concerns for educators, policymakers, and parents. Academic achievement refers to the level of knowledge and skills attained by students as measured by standardized tests or examinations (Olatunde, 2020). Over the years, numerous factors have been identified as determinants of students’ academic performance, among which family background and the school technological environment are particularly significant.
Family background represents the social, economic, and educational characteristics of a student’s home environment (Eze, 2021). It includes parental education, occupation, income level, family structure, and the value parents place on education. According to Okeke and Nwosu (2020), students from supportive families with educated and economically stable parents tend to perform better academically because they receive more encouragement, educational resources, and moral support. Conversely, students from disadvantaged backgrounds may struggle to meet academic expectations due to limited access to learning materials and inadequate motivation.
The school technological environment, on the other hand, refers to the extent to which modern educational technologies—such as computers, internet access, projectors, and smart boards—are available and effectively utilized for teaching and learning (Afolabi, 2022). In the 21st century, technology integration in schools has become indispensable for enhancing teaching efficiency, promoting interactive learning, and improving students’ academic performance. Research by Adediran and Ogunlade (2021) found that schools with well-equipped technological facilities foster better academic engagement and comprehension among students compared to those without such resources.
In urban centers like Ikeja, where technological infrastructure is more developed, one might expect higher academic performance among students. However, disparities still exist, often influenced by the combined effect of students’ family backgrounds and the quality of the school’s technological environment. While some students benefit from technologically advanced schools and supportive families, others may face challenges such as digital inequality and limited parental involvement. As observed by Owoeye and Yara (2019), the interaction between home factors and school conditions plays a crucial role in determining academic outcomes.
Therefore, this study investigates the combined influence of family background and school technological environment on students’ academic achievement in urban secondary schools in Ikeja, aiming to identify how these factors jointly shape learning outcomes and to provide recommendations for improving educational equity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing emphasis on technology-driven education and family involvement in academic success, many secondary schools in urban areas like Ikeja continue to record mixed levels of student performance. Some students perform excellently, while others in the same environment struggle academically. The reasons for these discrepancies are often rooted in unequal family backgrounds and varying levels of technological exposure within schools.
While previous studies have examined the effects of family background or school environment independently (Eze, 2021; Afolabi, 2022), limited research has considered their combined influence. It remains unclear how a technologically advanced school environment might compensate for or reinforce the effects of a student’s home background. This gap in knowledge calls for an empirical investigation to determine the extent to which both family and school technology factors jointly influence students’ academic achievement in Ikeja.
