CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

1. To examine the role of forensic accounting in enhancing audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes.
2. To investigate the relationship between forensic accounting practices and the transparency of financial reports in Nigeria’s public institutes.
3. To assess the impact of forensic accounting on the detection and prevention of fraud in Nigeria’s public institutes.
4. To evaluate the effectiveness of forensic accounting methods and techniques in improving audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes.

• Research Questions

The research questions are stated below:

1. What role does forensic accounting play in enhancing audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes?
2. Is there a relationship between forensic accounting practices and the transparency of financial reports in Nigeria’s public institutes?
3. What impact does forensic accounting have on the detection and prevention of fraud in Nigeria’s public institutes?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Forensic accounting cannot enhance audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes.

H₁: Forensic accounting can enhance audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes.

• Significance of the Study

The significance of forensic accounting and audit quality in Nigeria’s public institutes cannot be overstated. The study examines Forensic accounting and audit quality in Nigeria Public Institutes. The study is limited to Federal Inland Revenue Service, Lagos Nigeria.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Forensic Accounting: This is a specialized area of accounting that utilizes accounting, auditing, and investigative skills to examine the finances of an individual or business. Forensic accountants are often used in legal proceedings to identify and analyze financial evidence, and can also be involved in investigations into fraud or financial irregularities.

Audit Quality: This refers to the reliability and relevance of the audit report. It is a measure of the auditor’s assurance that a company’s financial statements are free from material misstatements. High audit quality means that the financial statements present a true and fair view of a company’s financial position, and are in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework.
