CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Industrial solid waste is a type of waste produced by industrial activities, such as that of factories, mills and mines. It existed since the outset of the industrial revolution. Much industrial solid waste is neither hazardous not toxic such as waste fiber produced by agriculture and logging. Since the industrial revolution, industrial and mining
operations have been accompanied by a problem. Industrial
solid waste which may be toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive, if improperly managed, this waste can pose dangerous health and environmental consequences. In Rivers state the amount of hazardous waste generated by manufacturing industries has increased from an estimated one thousand tons annually.
Industrial solid wastes are large in number and varied in magnitude. They contain large quantities of raw products, and bye products, the list may run to thousands and include
solvents, cyanides, sulphide and ammonia. Many of these substances are toxic in nature, the effect of industrialization can be directly associated with environmental pollution, this is because of the waste materials associated with industrial activities. The word waste generations is associated with industrial activities, such waste as solid, liquid, gaseous and air particulate are waste products of industries. On global scale, environmental pollution is a result of activities of industrial waste product.
Though industrialization has proved the standard of living and economic growth of these countries, however, one cannot ignore the environmental hazards associated with industrial activities and its waste products, the environment which we live in is becoming increasingly polluted as a result of indiscriminate discharge of poisonous waste for instance, in the trans-Amadi industrial area of Port-Harcourt, the air is constantly being polluted by chemical discharge in the air. Although most pollutant are invisible, the effects are however visible. Pollution is growing at an alarming relate of which drastic measures must be employed to curb the negative effect on the study area.
Consequently the principal focus of this project is to identify the effects of industrial waste disposal in the trans-Amadi industrial area of Port-Harcourt. A neater and healthier environment could be achieved if the source, type and characteristics of waste generated in the study area are identified, the effective measure can be proffered.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
This research work is on the effect of industrial solid waste disposal on the environment, until recently, Port-Harcourt was known as the “garden city of Nigeria because of its neatness and the overwhelming presence of vegetation and flowers all over the metropolis. But today, the presence of piles of refuse and industrial solid waste dotting the entire city have turned Prot-Harcourt rather to a “garbage city”. Indiscriminate dumping of waste, industrial, commercial and house hold such as food waste, paper, polythene, textile, scrap corners and gutters, is still very common. The situation is so bad that traffic flow is obstructed, while there is likelihood that leachates from such dumps, after mixing with rain water, have the potential to contaminate drinking water and fishes in the river around the study area. The basic solid waste management processes of collection, transport, segregation and final disposal appear to be very inefficient. This research carefully assessed the present system of solid waste management in trans-Amadi area of Port-Harcourt, with the aim of identifying the main bottlenecks to its efficiency and the way forward.
The environment is faced with a lot of problems, this problems have not received enough attention as they deserve, such problems as people may generally say is the waste output of industries in our industrial areas of Port-Harcourt.
With rapid growth in the area, industrial solid waste generally tends to increase and constitutes threats to life, material assets and the environment at large. Government over the years has made effort to reduce the problem of solid waste management issues so as to proffer lasting solutions.
In-spite of these efforts, the problem of solid waste management and pollution still persist. Hence, it is the intention of this research to know why these problems have persisted, examine their effects and proffer lasting solution.
1.3 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
1.3.1 GOALS
The goal of the study is to examine the effect of industrial solid waste disposal on the environment.
1.3.2 OBJECTIVES
The objective of the study includes;
- To identify the characteristics of industrial solid waste disposal generated by industries in the study area.
- To identify some of the solid waste management programmes by the government, non-governmental organization (N.G.O) and Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A).
- To identify the effects of industrial solid waste on the environment.
- To examine the extent of environmental decay caused by various industrial solid waste disposal.
- To make sure that solid waste is properly disposed and managed.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings of this study will help:
To assist industrialists to handle their waste in other to save the environment from further decay and pollution, also the findings and recommendations will be of great assistance to cream off professionals who may have keen interest on environmental matters, especially, industrial solid waste management in Nigeria. It will also serve as a reference point to student and scholars of higher academics learning in their effort to procure information about industrial waste and management.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
- How can waste be controlled?
- What are the implications of this industrial solid waste to the humans around the area?
- What can we do to reduce these solid wastes generated by these industries?
1.6 HYPOTHESIS
- There is a relationship between industrial growth and solid waste generation in trans-Amadi industrial area of Port-Harcourt.
- Solid waste generated by industries has a significant effect on the environment in trans-Amadi industrial area of Port-Harcourt.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study will focus on the effects of industrial solid waste disposal. It will be limited to trans-Amadi industrial layout in Port-Harcourt.
1.8 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Every researcher is faced with diverse problems in carrying out any research work. However, in carrying out this research, there are some limitations which include:
- Time constraints
- Lack of materials and textbooks for the smooth review of relate literature.
- Problems of distribution and retrieval of questionnaires.
- Problem associated with getting through some of the environmentalist and staff of some of the industries in the study area for oral interview.
1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS
INDUSTRY – A place where raw product are produce as a
finished product for use.
WASTE DISPOSAL – A place where we dispose our unwanted materials or waste product.
ENVIRONMENT – The totality of our surrounding in which we live, survive and work.
PROBLEMS – Questions or something to be solved or decided, something difficult.
