CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education remains a vital instrument for national development, social integration, and individual empowerment. At the heart of every effective educational system lies language, which serves as the primary medium through which teaching and learning take place. In Nigeria, English Language occupies a central position as the official language and the major medium of instruction across all levels of education. It is also a core subject in the school curriculum, particularly at the junior secondary school level, where learners are expected to develop foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Mastery of English Language at this stage is essential, as it directly influences students’ academic performance in other subjects and their overall educational advancement.

Despite the importance of English Language in the Nigerian educational system, the teaching and learning of the subject continue to face numerous challenges, especially in public junior secondary schools. Many students exhibit poor comprehension, weak grammar usage, limited vocabulary, and low writing proficiency. These challenges have been attributed to several factors, including inadequate teaching methods, poor learning environments, overcrowded classrooms, and insufficient instructional resources. Among these factors, the availability and effective use of instructional materials have been identified as a critical determinant of successful teaching and learning outcomes.

Instructional materials refer to all resources used by teachers to facilitate understanding, reinforce concepts, and promote active learning among students. These materials may include textbooks, charts, flashcards, pictures, audio-visual aids, real objects, and digital media. According to Adeyanju (2016), instructional materials help to concretize abstract ideas, stimulate learners’ interest, and enhance retention of knowledge. When appropriately selected and effectively utilized, instructional materials make learning more meaningful and learner-centered, thereby improving students’ academic achievement.

At the junior secondary school level, where learners are still developing basic cognitive and language skills, instructional materials play a crucial role in simplifying complex concepts and sustaining learners’ attention. The use of visual and audio-visual materials in English Language teaching has been shown to promote better understanding of grammar rules, vocabulary development, sentence construction, and oral communication skills. Furthermore, instructional materials encourage active participation, collaborative learning, and critical thinking among students, which are essential components of effective language learning.

However, in many Nigerian schools, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas such as Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, the provision and utilization of instructional materials remain inadequate. Schools often rely heavily on traditional chalk-and-talk methods, with limited or no supporting instructional aids. Where materials are available, they are sometimes outdated, insufficient in quantity, or poorly utilized due to lack of teacher training or motivation. This situation raises concerns about the quality of English Language instruction and the ability of students to attain the expected learning outcomes.

Given the strategic importance of English Language and the recognized role of instructional materials in enhancing teaching and learning, it becomes imperative to empirically examine the impact of instructional materials on students’ learning outcomes. This study therefore seeks to investigate the impact of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of English Language in selected junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, with a view to providing evidence-based recommendations for improving instructional practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The persistent poor performance of junior secondary school students in English Language has become a major concern for educators, parents, and policymakers in Nigeria. Despite English Language being a compulsory subject and the medium of instruction in schools, many students complete junior secondary education with inadequate language skills. This deficiency often manifests in poor reading comprehension, grammatical errors, limited vocabulary, and inability to express ideas effectively in written and spoken forms.

One of the major issues contributing to this problem is the inadequate availability and ineffective use of instructional materials in English Language classrooms. In many junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, teaching is predominantly teacher-centered, with excessive reliance on textbooks and verbal explanations. Instructional materials such as charts, pictures, flashcards, audio-visual aids, and language laboratories are either insufficient or completely absent. This limits students’ exposure to practical and interactive learning experiences that are crucial for language acquisition.

Moreover, even in situations where instructional materials are available, some teachers lack the necessary skills and training to effectively integrate these materials into their teaching. This results in underutilization or misuse of instructional resources, thereby reducing their potential impact on students’ learning. Large class sizes, inadequate funding, and poor supervision further compound the problem, making it difficult for teachers to adopt innovative teaching strategies.

The continued neglect of instructional materials in English Language teaching may widen the gap between curriculum expectations and actual learning outcomes. If this issue is not adequately addressed, students may continue to perform poorly in English Language, which can negatively affect their academic progress and future opportunities. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of English Language in selected junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of English Language in selected junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Identify the types of instructional materials available for teaching English Language in junior secondary schools.
2. Determine the extent to which instructional materials are utilized by English Language teachers.
3. Examine the impact of instructional materials on students’ understanding and performance in English Language.
4. Identify challenges affecting the effective use of instructional materials in English Language teaching.

1.4 Research Question

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What types of instructional materials are available for teaching English Language in junior secondary schools?
2. To what extent are instructional materials utilized by English Language teachers in junior secondary schools?
3. What impact do instructional materials have on students’ understanding and academic performance in English Language?
4. What challenges affect the effective use of instructional materials in the teaching of English Language in junior secondary schools?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of English Language in junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

H₁: There is a significant impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of English Language in junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be highly beneficial to students, particularly those at the junior secondary school level, as it will highlight the importance of instructional materials in enhancing the teaching and learning of English Language. Effective use of instructional materials is expected to improve students’ comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar usage, and overall language proficiency. By identifying how instructional materials support learning, the study will contribute to better classroom experiences, increased learner motivation, and improved academic performance in English Language.

The study will also be significant to English Language teachers, as it will provide empirical evidence on the role of instructional materials in facilitating effective teaching. The findings will help teachers understand how the use of appropriate instructional resources can simplify complex language concepts, sustain students’ interest, and promote active participation during lessons. Additionally, the study may encourage teachers to adopt innovative and learner-centered teaching strategies, thereby improving instructional delivery and learning outcomes.

For school administrators, the study will serve as a valuable guide in planning, supervising, and supporting effective teaching and learning processes. The findings will enable administrators to recognize the necessity of providing adequate instructional materials and ensuring their proper utilization in schools. It will also assist them in organizing teacher training programs and monitoring classroom practices to enhance the quality of English Language instruction.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected junior secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. It focuses on the impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of English Language among junior secondary school students.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Instructional Materials: Teaching aids and resources used to facilitate learning, such as textbooks, charts, pictures, and audio-visual materials.

Teaching: The process of imparting knowledge and skills to learners.

Learning: A relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge resulting from experience or instruction.

English Language: The official language of instruction and communication in Nigerian schools.

Junior Secondary School: The first three years of secondary education in Nigeria.
