Full Project – THE IMPACTS OF MICRO FINANCING ON THE PERFORMANCE OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Microfinance refers to the provision of financial services—such as micro-loans, micro-savings, micro-insurance, and simple payment facilities—to low-income individuals, particularly micro-entrepreneurs who are excluded from formal banking systems (USAID, 2000). Microfinance institutions (MFIs) emerged to bridge the financing gap created by the inability of poor individuals to meet the collateral requirements demanded by conventional banks. Through group lending, flexible repayment structures, and small loan sizes, microfinance has become a poverty-alleviation mechanism and an empowerment tool for marginalized populations, especially women (Armendáriz & Morduch, 2010).
Globally, women constitute a significant proportion of the economically active poor, and studies show that they consistently use micro-loans for productive ventures and household welfare (UNDP, 2013). According to UNITUS (2000), microfinance institutions strategically target women because they have a higher loan repayment rate and demonstrate strong capability in managing small resources for business growth. In Nigeria, microfinance became a formal national policy through the Microfinance Policy Framework of 2005, aimed at expanding financial services to the poor and strengthening women’s entrepreneurial activities (CBN, 2005).
Despite the rapid growth of microfinance banks in Nigeria, many women entrepreneurs still struggle with access to adequate credit, business expansion, and sustainability. This raises questions about the actual impact of microfinance on their business performance, particularly in Kaduna State—a region known for high entrepreneurial activity among women. Understanding how microfinance influences income generation, business growth, and entrepreneurial sustainability is essential for evaluating its effectiveness as a development tool.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although microfinance was introduced as a strategy to support low-income entrepreneurs through small, collateral-free loans and flexible savings products (USAID, 2000), many women in Kaduna State still face significant challenges in accessing and maximizing microfinance services. The inability of women entrepreneurs to meet stringent administrative requirements, coupled with the limited financial capacity of microfinance banks, has constrained the availability of credit to many potential beneficiaries (Acha, 2012).
Furthermore, savings mobilization among low-income women remains low due to irregular income patterns, thereby limiting the loanable funds available to microfinance banks. Several years after the introduction of the microfinance policy, many women-owned enterprises still experience stagnation, low profitability, and poor business expansion. This suggests that microfinance may not be achieving its intended developmental objectives.
The problem of this study, therefore, is to empirically investigate the impact of microfinancing on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State, with a focus on identifying the extent of impact and the challenges affecting effective microfinance service delivery.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impacts of microfinancing on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
-
Assess the extent to which microfinance influences the business performance of women entrepreneurs.
-
Determine the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in accessing microfinance services.
-
Evaluate the effectiveness of microfinance banks in supporting women-owned businesses.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the level of impact of microfinancing on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State?
-
What challenges do women entrepreneurs face when accessing microfinance services?
-
How effective are microfinance banks in promoting women’s entrepreneurial performance?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study is significant in several ways:
-
Policy Contribution: Findings will assist policymakers and regulators (such as CBN) in improving microfinance policies targeted toward women.
-
Institutional Benefit: Microfinance banks will benefit from insights into the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, helping them redesign products and services.
-
Entrepreneurial Development: Women entrepreneurs will understand how best to utilize microfinance to enhance business performance.
-
Academic Contribution: The study adds to existing literature on microfinance and women entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀: The level of impact of microfinancing on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State is low.
H₁: The level of impact of microfinancing on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State is high.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of microfinance on women entrepreneurs within Kaduna State. It covers microfinance loan access, savings, training, and other support services provided by microfinance banks and their influence on business performance indicators such as profitability, growth, and sustainability.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study was limited by challenges related to logistics, financial constraints, and geographical coverage. Accessing respondents across the state posed some difficulties, and time limitations also affected the depth of data collection.
1.9 Definition of Terms
