CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The communication process is initiated by a sender who communicates a message through a channel in a language which is capable of being understood and interpreted by a receiver (Sagimo 2002). Any organization should encourage communication as this is a means of expressing organizations mission and vision statement. Employees also use to air their views among others. Communication therefore is a means or a way of passing information or receiving information from one person to the other which in this case written or unwritten information.
According to Roger Hayward as quoted by Adegoke (200:1) says that public relations is the propagation of the personality of the organization. This states the importance of communication between the organization and its public Roger Hayward’s definition has something to do with the (IBPR) definition because both state the duty of public relations officers in promoting projecting and representing the organization and at the sometime relating with the public of the organization both the internal and external public. Public relation also projects the management personality of which the public relation department represents, through their activities with the use of their perspective tools (i.e. print and electronic media).
It is only through information that leaders present the organizations image. Through communication leaders help to coordinate all the organizations work and all the activities taking place in or out of the organization which in the end help the organization to accomplish its tasks and duties. In an organization communication makes it easy for cordial relationship between management and the subordinate. Effective communication is a vital tool to every organizations leadership because without it coordination among organizational customers and employees will be poor. Without communication no orders will be given, no instructions will be given and taken and above all non-information will be disseminated. (Saleemi 1987)
It is therefore paramount for the researcher to investigate the role played by communication in the organizations growth. The firm has to communicate internally among themselves and externally with its customers and public.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
According to Sagimo (2002), management of multi-direction communication is paramount to an organization that ought to grow, retain customers and sustain competition, it must flow on communication. Multi-direction communication is that communication that involves everyone in the organization. Supervisors should communicate to their managers and subordinate so as to ensure the organizations working environment is healthy. At selected legal firms employees have not fully embraced this spirit of multi-direction communication; others feel inferior to communicate to either fellow work-mates or their immediate supervisor. Also, it takes long before the feedback is received from the information passed on earlier. Thus the lack of effective multi-direction communication had led to fall out of employees whose views cannot be well hard and who are not given adequate chance to listen to. Poor relationship among employees has been witnessed which has led to reduced productivity in the organization. Thus it is from this problem that the study set out to determine the role of multi-direction in an organization a case study of selected legal firms
