History of Education in Sierra Leone

Christian missionaries brought the concept of public schooling to Sierra Leone in the early 19th century. The Church Missionary Society (CMS) founded the country’s first institution of higher education in 1816 in Freetown. Christianity and reading skills were prioritized in CMS classrooms.

The colonial administration of Sierra Leone assumed control of the country’s educational system in 1876. Primary and high schools were formed and based on the British educational system. The course material was developed with the goal of educating future government servants.
