CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The role of the church in society has been a subject of sustained theological reflection, particularly in relation to its mission in promoting moral renewal, justice, and social transformation. From the Old Testament concept of Israel as a covenant community to the New Testament portrayal of the church as the “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” the people of God are consistently presented as agents of divine purpose within human society (Bosch, 2011; Wright, 2010). In contemporary theology, this social responsibility of the church has become even more significant in contexts marked by corruption, inequality, insecurity, and moral decline.

In Nigeria, the church occupies a dominant religious space and plays a visible role in education, healthcare, political engagement, and moral instruction. Despite this influence, questions remain about the effectiveness of the church in driving sustainable social transformation. While churches are numerically large and spiritually active, societal challenges such as poverty, corruption, ethnic conflict, and weak civic responsibility persist. This raises a critical theological concern regarding whether the church is fully embodying its biblical mandate as an agent of transformation.

Matthew 5:13–16 is one of the most foundational texts concerning the identity and mission of believers in society. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus describes His followers as “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” metaphors that signify preservation, influence, purity, guidance, and visibility. Salt in the ancient world functioned as a preservative and enhancer of flavor, while light symbolized truth, revelation, and moral direction (Carson, 2017; France, 2007). These metaphors collectively suggest that the church is not meant to withdraw from society but to actively influence it toward righteousness and godly order.

However, contemporary interpretations and applications of this passage often remain limited to personal piety rather than social engagement. Many churches emphasize spiritual growth and evangelism while underemphasizing structural and societal transformation. This has contributed to a form of Christianity that is spiritually vibrant but socially passive in many contexts. In Nigeria, this imbalance is evident in the gap between church growth and societal development.

A critical exegetical study of Matthew 5:13–16 is therefore necessary to uncover the original intent of Jesus’ teaching and to evaluate its implications for the church’s role in social transformation. Such an exegetical approach will help bridge the gap between biblical interpretation and practical ecclesial responsibility, especially within the Nigerian socio-political context where the need for ethical leadership and social reform is urgent.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the clear biblical mandate given in Matthew 5:13–16, there is a growing concern that the contemporary church, particularly in Nigeria, is not fully fulfilling its role as an agent of social transformation. While churches are expanding numerically and increasing their visibility in public life, their impact on systemic social issues such as corruption, injustice, poverty, and governance challenges remains limited.

One major problem is the tendency to spiritualize the metaphors of “salt” and “light,” interpreting them primarily in terms of personal holiness and evangelistic activity, rather than as calls to broader societal influence. This narrow interpretation has contributed to a disconnect between biblical teaching and social responsibility. As a result, many Christians withdraw from active engagement in political, economic, and civic spheres, leaving critical areas of society without adequate moral and ethical guidance.

Furthermore, there is inconsistency in how churches interpret their role in social transformation. Some emphasize prosperity theology and individual success, while others focus solely on spiritual salvation without integrating social ethics. This fragmented understanding weakens the collective witness of the church and reduces its transformative potential in society.

In the Nigerian context, where issues such as corruption, unemployment, insecurity, and weak governance persist, the expectation of the church as a moral and prophetic voice is particularly significant. However, the apparent gap between biblical mandate and practical engagement raises theological concerns about whether Matthew 5:13–16 is being properly understood and applied.

Although several studies have examined the role of the church in society, there remains a lack of detailed exegetical engagement with Matthew 5:13–16 that directly connects its theological meaning with contemporary social transformation in Nigeria. This gap necessitates a critical exegesis that will clarify Jesus’ intent and evaluate its implications for modern ecclesiology and social ethics.

Therefore, the problem this study addresses is the inadequate exegetical understanding and inconsistent application of Matthew 5:13–16, which has limited the church’s effectiveness in contributing to social transformation in Nigeria.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to conduct a critical exegesis of Matthew 5:13–16 and examine its relevance to the role of the church in social transformation in Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the historical, literary, and theological context of Matthew 5:13–16.
2. Conduct a critical exegetical analysis of the passage.
3. Identify the theological meaning of “salt of the earth” and “light of the world.”
4. Evaluate the implications of the text for the mission of the church.
5. Assess how the passage informs the church’s role in addressing social challenges in Nigeria.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to biblical scholarship by providing a critical exegetical analysis of Matthew 5:13–16, deepening understanding of Jesus’ teaching on discipleship and societal engagement. Second, it offers theological insights into the mission of the church, helping to clarify its role beyond spiritual activities to include social responsibility.

Third, the study is valuable for church leaders, theologians, and policymakers by providing a biblical foundation for social engagement and ethical leadership. It will help churches in Nigeria reassess their role in addressing societal challenges such as corruption, poverty, and injustice.

Fourth, it contributes to academic discourse in practical theology and ecclesiology by linking exegesis with contextual application. Finally, it serves as a resource for students and researchers interested in the relationship between biblical texts and social transformation.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on a critical exegetical analysis of Matthew 5:13–16 and its relevance to the role of the church in social transformation in Nigeria. It is limited to the interpretation of the selected biblical text and its theological application within the Nigerian context. Other biblical passages are referenced only for supporting interpretation.
