INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Across different societies, religious beliefs guide behaviors, influence decision-making, and provide explanations for existential questions about life, death, and the supernatural. For many communities, religion is not just a private practice but a public institution that binds members together through shared values, rituals, and traditions (Eze, 2019).

Among the Afo people of Udege in Nasarawa State, traditional religion has historically been the bedrock of communal life. It provides a framework for understanding the natural and social environment, regulating interpersonal relationships, and maintaining order within the society. Central to this traditional religion is the practice of idol worship, which involves the veneration of physical objects or statues believed to house spiritual powers capable of influencing human affairs, such as fertility, protection, wealth, and general well-being (Eze, 2019).

Idol worship among the Afo people serves multiple social functions. It is a means of connecting with ancestors, seeking guidance, and reinforcing communal norms. Through shared rituals and ceremonies, members of the community experience a sense of belonging and identity. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis is formulated and will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Idol worship has no significant effect on the social, economic, psychological, and educational development of the Afo people in Udege Local Government Area.

H₁: Idol worship has a significant effect on the social, economic, psychological, and educational development of the Afo people in Udege Local Government Area.

The research examines both male and female community members across various age groups, but excludes other ethnic groups in the region to maintain cultural specificity. Data will be collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observation within the study area, providing a comprehensive understanding of the practice and its effects.
