INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Urban air pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental and public health challenges in developing countries. The rapid growth of cities, increasing industrialization, and rising motor vehicle numbers have contributed significantly to the degradation of air quality worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) estimates that over 90% of urban populations are exposed to air pollution levels exceeding recommended limits, leading to millions of premature deaths annually. Vehicular emissions are among the primary sources of urban air pollution, releasing pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), particulate matter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pose serious risks to human health (USEPA, 2016).
Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, is one of Nigeria’s major urban centers and a hub of oil and gas activities. The city has experienced rapid urbanization, population growth, and increased economic activities over the past few decades. With a population exceeding three million (NPC, 2021), the city faces a significant rise in the number of motor vehicles, both commercial and private, contributing substantially to air pollution. Major road networks, including Aba Road, East-West Road, and Mile 1–Mile 3 highways, experience severe traffic congestion during peak hours, leading to high levels of vehicular emissions. The situation is compounded by the prevalence of poorly maintained vehicles, traffic jams, and inefficient fuel standards (Nwankwo et al., 2020).
The pollutants emitted by vehicles have direct and indirect effects on public health. Short-term exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide and particulate matter can result in respiratory distress, headaches, dizziness, and eye irritation. Long-term exposure, particularly to fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and nitrogen oxides, has been linked to chronic respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disorders, lung cancer, and even premature death (Brook et al., 2010). Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are especially vulnerable. Additionally, vehicular emissions contribute to environmental issues such as acid rain, smog formation, and the urban heat island effect, further deteriorating living conditions (Sicard et al., 2021).
Despite the growing concern over air pollution in Port Harcourt, there is limited empirical data on the spatial and temporal distribution of air pollutants, particularly those arising from vehicular emissions. Most studies on air quality in Nigeria have focused on industrial emissions or general urban pollution, leaving the specific contribution of vehicular emissions and associated public health risks inadequately explored (Owoade et al., 2019). Moreover, local regulatory enforcement regarding vehicle emissions standards is often weak, and public awareness about the health hazards of air pollution remains low. This underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of vehicular air pollution and its implications for public health in Port Harcourt.
This study aims to assess air quality in selected high-traffic areas of Port Harcourt and evaluate the associated public health risks. By integrating environmental monitoring with health risk assessment, this research will provide essential data for policymakers, urban planners, environmental agencies, and health authorities to mitigate the adverse effects of vehicular emissions in the metropolis.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Port Harcourt Metropolis faces escalating air pollution problems due to rapid urbanization, high vehicle density, and inefficient traffic management. Vehicular emissions have been identified as the primary contributors to the deteriorating air quality in the city. Traffic congestion along major arteries such as Aba Road, East-West Road, GRA, and Mile 1–Mile 3 results in the continuous release of harmful pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter (Owoade et al., 2019). These pollutants accumulate in the atmosphere, exposing residents to significant health risks.
Despite these challenges, the monitoring of air quality in Port Harcourt is limited and largely confined to industrial emissions. Comprehensive data on pollutant concentrations in high-traffic areas, their temporal variation, and the associated health risks are scarce. Many residents report symptoms such as persistent cough, respiratory irritation, headaches, and fatigue, yet there is insufficient empirical research linking these conditions to vehicular air pollution. Vulnerable populations, particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions, are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality from air pollution-related diseases.
Furthermore, weak enforcement of vehicle emission standards, poor maintenance of public transportation fleets, and a lack of public awareness exacerbate the problem. Without reliable data on pollutant levels and health risks, policymakers face difficulties in designing effective interventions, such as traffic decongestion measures, emission control policies, or public health awareness campaigns. There is an urgent need to systematically assess air quality and quantify the public health risks associated with vehicular emissions to guide evidence-based interventions.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
